A total of 2.177 million students across the Kingdom will return to their schools on Sunday to resume in-class education at the start of the second semester of the 2021-2022 school year.

Secretary General of the Ministry of Education, Najwa Qubeilat, said the Ministry is keen to resume in-class education in schools, and at the same time preserve the health of students and teachers by following the health protocol in coordination with the Health Ministry and the National Center for Security and Crisis Management (NCSCM).

Qubeilat told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that 198,244 male and female students, representing 20.5 per cent of the target group from 12 to 17 years old, received the first dose of the vaccine, while 145,806 students, constituting 15 per cent of the same group, received the second dose.

She explained that the highest rate of vaccination was recorded among high school students, who numbered about 135,000 students, with 78,304 students, or 62 per cent, for the first dose, and 56,521 students, or 44.8 per cent, for the second dose.

She indicated that Covid-19 active cases caseload, which were registered among students in less than 10 days, amounted to 33,691 cases, while active cases among Tawjihi students since they returned to schools at the beginning of this month, reached 5,990, or 4.4 per cent.

For his part, Education Ministry spokesperson, Ahmad Al Masa’feh, said the ministry is constantly and actively following up on the epidemiological situation in schools.

He pointed out that 31 schools, where more than 10 per cent of students tested positive for Covid-19, has been switched to on-line education, in addition to switching about 171 classrooms to on-line education, due to the hike in infections rate set by the health protocol currently in force.

He noted that the rate of teachers who received vaccinations rose to 97.17 per cent, as they amounted to 101,300, stressing that teachers who did not receive vaccinations will not be allowed to enter schools in implementation of Defense Order No. 35, and their absence will be deducted from their annual vacations.
