Acting Foreign Minister meets EU ambassadors over Jerusalem assaults

Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Culture Minister Ali Al-Ayed, Monday met with European Union ambassadors to update them on the latest developments in occupied East Jerusalem.

The minister told the envoys that Israeli police and special forces’ actions at Al-Aqsa Mosque/ Al-Haram Al-Sharif is an “unacceptable and condemnable crime, and is a heinous assault and flagrant violation.”

Israel, he said, continued its assaults against Al-Aqsa Mosque and Arab Jerusalemites in breach of the international law and existing historical and legal status quo, as well as its obligations as the occupying power in East Jerusalem.

Jordan, based on the historical Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, places all its capabilities to protect the sanctities, the city’s religious identity and the historical and legal status quo, and will fend off the illegal Israeli attacks, Al-Ayed pledged.

He said that the Kingdom is holding contacts with the international community to secure effective global action to protect Jerusalem and its holy shrines in the face of the illegal and inhumane Israeli practices and their dangerous repercussions on the security and stability of the region and beyond.

The minister underscored the European Union’s role to pressure Israel to cease the violations and attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque/ Al-Haram Al-Sharif and the Jerusalemites, especially in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem, where many Palestinian families face evictions from their homes.

Al-Ayed briefed the envoys on the Kingdom’s efforts, in coordination with the Palestinians, to support Arabs in Sheikh Jarrah and uphold their legitimate right to the homes they own, adding that undermining that right violates the international law and humanitarian law.
