Tsinghua SIGS developed satellite-based carbon emission inversion techniques to investigate the driving forces of global wildfire emission trends

SHENZHEN, China, Oct. 18, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Zheng Bo’s team at the Institute of Environment and Ecology, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (SIGS), has developed a novel atmospheric inversion system to infer global wildfire carbon emissions from satellite retrievals of carbon monoxide, investigated the spatial and temporal trends and driving forces of global wildfire CO2 emissions from 2000-2019. Their study suggests that the absence of a rapid, contemporary decline in global wildfire emissions with burned area is the increasing forest wildfire emissions. This study can guide the future development of a global carbon budget monitoring and inversion framework based on satellite remote sensing. Dr. Zheng’s research article, ” Increasing forest fire emissions despite the decline in global burned area,” has been published in Science Advances on 24th Sep (https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abh2646).

Satellites have detected a global decline in fire burned areas over grasslands, coincident with a small increase over forests over the past decades. Bo Zheng and his colleagues developed an atmospheric inversion system to show that global fire emissions have been stable or slightly decreasing despite the substantial decline in global burned area since 2000, caused by emission increase from forest fires offsetting the decreasing emissions from grass and shrubland fires. Forest fires are larger CO2 sources per unit area burned than grassland fires, with a slow or incomplete follow-up recovery — sometimes no recovery due to degradation and deforestation. With fires expanding over forest areas, the slow recovery of CO2 uptake over burned forest lands weakens land sink capacity, implying that pressures from global fires on climate have not been relieved despite the decline in global burned area.

(U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission)”.

Partner Wayne Atkinson.

His Majesty King Abdullah, in three separate meetings at Al Husseiniya Palace on Monday, received the annual reports of the Judicial Council, the Jordan Integrity and Anti-Corruption Commission (JIACC), and the National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR).

During a meeting with Judicial Council President Mohammad Ghazou, King Abdullah stressed that a just, impartial, and efficient judiciary is a must to support political modernisation.

His Majesty noted the importance of continuing to utilise technology and training judicial staff, and emphasised the need to facilitate procedures and expedite litigation, without compromising fairness and quality.

According to the council’s report, an independent budget was allocated for the Judicial Council as of January 2020, the Cabinet approved the Judicial Service By-law, and the number of female judges went up by 42%.

Receiving the JIACC annual report from Chairperson Muhannad Hijazi, the King reaffirmed that no one is above the law and that fighting corruption is a top priority.

His Majesty underscored that JIACC’s work must have tangible results for the public, noting that it should also reflect on Jordan’s standing on international indices.

According to its annual report, the JIACC processed 2,090 complaints in 2020, 769 of which were investigated by law enforcement agencies and 170 were referred to public prosecution and established new specialised units, including the investment unit, which contributed to retrieving JD1.9 million and helped remove obstacles faced by investors.

At the meeting with NCHR Chairperson Rohayel Gharaibeh and Commissioner General Alaeddin Armouti, the King highlighted the importance placed on safeguarding freedoms and human rights during Jordan’s first centennial and called for bolstering these efforts into the second centennial.

His Majesty reaffirmed the need for cooperation and coordination with various state institutions to ensure the implementation of the recommendations of the NCHR’s 2020 report.

The report covered, among other issues, the strategy developed to ensure the continuation and fairness of litigation during the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to expand such efforts, as well as a number of measures taken to limit the spread of COVID-19 among inmates.

Qatar, WHO team up for healthy, safe FIFA World Cup 2022

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the State of Qatar on Monday launched a new multiyear collaboration to make the 2022 FIFA World Cup, being held in Qatar, a beacon for physical and mental health promotion, and also a model for ensuring future mega sport events are healthy and safe.

The three-year joint project, titled “Healthy 2022 World Cup – Creating Legacy for Sport and Health,” was announced at a joint ceremony at WHO’s headquarters, in Geneva, by WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghrebreyesus; Qatar Minister of Public Health; Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari, Secretary General of the Qatari Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy; Hassan Al Thawadi, FIFA President Gianni Infantino and WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Ahmed Al-Mandhari.

WHO and Qatar, working closely with FIFA, will undertake joint activities to place the promotion of healthy lives, health security and physical and mental well-being at the heart of the world football’s pinnacle event, being held from 21 November-18 December next year.

In addition, another critical goal of the project is to set and translate the best practices in health promotion, security and safety, as practiced at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, for use at major sporting events around the world.

“I would like to thank Minister Al Kuwari and the State of Qatar for teaming up with WHO to make the 2022 FIFA World Cup a role model for healthy sporting events,” said Tedros. “WHO is committed to working with Qatar and FIFA to leverage the global power of football to help people lead the healthiest and safest lives possible.”

Tedros added: “As the Qatar tournament will be the first FIFA World Cup held during the pandemic, the event offers a unique opportunity to show how sport can promote health now and provide a lasting legacy for organizing healthy sporting events as the world recovers from the pandemic.”
