UK donates 20 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to poor countries

The British government announced that it will donate 20 million doses of the “Oxford-AstraZeneca” vaccine to countries in need by the end of this year as part of the UK’s commitment to donate 100 million doses of vaccine.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will call on his fellow G-20 leaders to vaccinate the world by the end of next year, the British government said Saturday in a statement.

The United Kingdom sent 10 million doses of the “Oxford-AstraZeneca” vaccine to the COVAX initiative, and in the coming weeks it will deliver an additional 10 million vaccines to some of the most vulnerable people in the world, the statement said.

It added that these additional donations mean that 30.6 million spare doses of the “Oxford-AstraZeneca” vaccine will be provided to those in need this year.

UK reports 166 COVID fatalities

The UK’s health department Saturday reported 166 COVID-19 deaths, taking the toll to 140,558.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said 41,278 people tested positive for the highly contagious lung disease, as the caseload tops 9 million.

Jordan sees 12 COVID-19 fatalities, 1, 022 new cases on Saturday-MoH

To date, there are currently 20, 701 cases countrywide, according to the media statement issued by the Prime Ministry and the Ministry of Health.

The statement added that the number of patients who were admitted to hospitals today stood at 94, while 50 cases have recovered and discharged.

According to the briefing, the total number of recoveries recorded Saturday, whether at hospitals or at home, stood at 1, 372 bringing the total to 829,089 since the outbreak began.

Moreover, the number of Covid-19 patients still receiving treatment at hospitals countrywide has reached 593.

The statement also indicated that occupancy of ICU beds in the northern, central and southern regions, has has reached 33%, 27%, and 12%, respectively.

With regard to testing, 21, 666 tests were conducted Saturday, 4.72 percent of which were positive.

Since March 2020, the total number of tests administered has increased to 10,938, 101, the joint statement noted.

The statement also added that the total number of people who received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine has reached 3,939,861 and 3,518,827 have received their second shot.

RHAS celebrates World Mental Health Day, with activities to protect vulnerable groups

The Royal Health Awareness Society (RHAS) recently launched activities concerned with mental health, under the theme: “Mental Health Care is a Right for All, Let’s make it a Reality,” in celebration of World Mental Health Day (WMHD).

The ceremony, according to a RHAS statement on Saturday, featured physical activities aimed to showcase importance of sports on improving psychological health, in addition to drawing murals to support people suffering from mental illnesses and reduce related discrimination.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the event came to cope with the “urgent” need to control the spread of mental illnesses, primarily depression and anxiety, which “negatively” affect the global health situation due to changing world health and development priorities to protect vulnerable groups, the statement added.

For the first time, the RHAS launched, in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO), a school mental health program, which trains school staff on the skills of detecting mental illness problems among students, teachers and the local community.

The RRHAS, an initiative of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, aims to increase health awareness and empower the local community to adopt positive healthy behaviors.

Unvaccinated expatriates to be deported starting December 15, says ministry

The Ministry of Interior confirmed that strict measures will be taken against expatriates who did not receive the two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.

In a statement on Saturday, the ministry said that starting from the December 15, unvaccinated expatriates will be deported.

“The decision comes with the aim of protecting public health,” the ministry added, noting that prompting expatriates to get vaccinated protect them against a future infection and transmitting the disease to others.

Expatriates are allowed to obtain the vaccine for free, without requiring to present a residence permit or a work permit.

Jordan seeks to achieve comprehensive health insurance by 2030-minister

Health Minister, Dr. Firas Hawari, said access to comprehensive health insurance is a “national” priority,

which Jordan seeks to reach by 2030 by signing a number of international conventions.

Addressing “Towards Comprehensive Health Coverage in Jordan” conference, organized by the Jordan Association For Medical Insurance (JAMI) Conference, in cooperation with stakeholders, Hawari noted His Majesty King Abdullah II directed, in a letter to the PM Bisher Khasawneh’s government to expand the base of uninsured people under Jordan’s health insurance program.

The government, he said, provides free health coverage to any patient suffering from a disease with a high treatment cost, primarily cancer, kidney failure and chronic blood diseases.

Over the past years, he said Jordan covered nearly 650,000 children under free health insurance, adding that the Kingdom also provided coverage to citizens over sixty.

To 2018, people covered under the health coverage has reached 72%, according to a study conducted by the Department of Statistics (DoS), he added.

Energy minister calls for developing Jordan’s electric grid to improve performance

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh Kharabsheh, stressed the importance of developing Jordan’s electricity grids and benefiting from global expertise in this field.

The minister said this projected effort would enhance contribution of local energy sources to power generation and the overall energy mix.

Touring the Monitoring and Control Center of the National Electric Power Company (NEPC) on Saturday, he affirmed the need to coordinate the company’s efforts with Energy & Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) and Jordan’s generation and distribution companies to ensure sustainability of the electric grid and prepare to address any emergency glitches.

The minister said the world is witnessing a technological revolution in the energy field, especially the renewable sector, which should be taken advantage of to upgrade Jordan’s electric network and better utilize local energy sources.

These steps would raise contribution to electricity generation and the total energy mix in a way that improves performance and reduces operational costs, according to KHarabsheh.

The minister also stressed the importance of the Arab electric connection and efforts to increase its capacity in a way that enhances the electric system’s stability.

In turn, NEPC’s Head, Amjad Rawashdeh, said the company has operational strategies and plans to meet electricity demand locally, to ensure continued supply to all consumers in the Kingdom’s various areas.

The company, he said, has operational procedures to ensure grid sustainability and avoid any comprehensive outages affecting Jordan’s electric system.

Jaghbir inaugurates Al Dar center to promote Jordanian handicrafts

Head of the Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI), Fathi Jaghbir, inaugurated “Al-Dar” center in the courtyard of the Intercontinental Jordan Hotel, under “Made in Jordan” slogan, to showcase a carefully selected quality handicrafts.

In a JIC statement on Saturday, the center displays clothing, textile, home furniture and accessories products made by Jordanian designers and charities working to help poor families and people with special needs.

Jaghbir said the handmade exhibits are inspired by Jordanian heritage, which reflect their makers’ creativity.

The center “constantly” displays products of designers, craftsmen and associations, with the aim of supporting these sectors by providing display and sale outlets, according to Jaghbir.

Head of the “Made in Jordan” campaign, Dr. Iyad Abu Haltam, said the initiative aims to promote national industrial products and handicrafts, and create a consumer culture among citizens that favors national products.

“Our national industries enjoy high quality and competitive prices,” he said, stressing the campaign’s keenness that made-in -Jordan products conform to local and international specifications.

2nd “Future Technology” program concludes

The second edition of the “Future Technology” program that targeted entrepreneurs and youth initiatives in addition to universities’ students, concluded on Saturday, according to a statement by the Ministry of Youth.

The four-day program, organized by the Ministry, in cooperation with the University of Jordan Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center and the Mobile Social Innovation Incubators Project at the Jordan River Foundation, brought together around 70 young men and women across the Kingdom.

The event entailed artificial intelligence skills, the Internet of things (IoT), big data, and how entrepreneurial projects benefit from emerging technologies.

G20 summit kicks off in Rome today

The first in-person Group of 20 summit since the coronavirus pandemic kicks off Saturday in Rome, addressing the global economic recovery, rising energy costs and supply chain problems.

According to the AFP, G20 leaders will tackle the existential threat of climate change, regional conflicts in Afghanistan, Libya and Sudan and other issues. Bilateral meetings on the summit’s sidelines will also be held, leading to major international agreements.

Most of the heads of state and government who are in Rome will head to UK’s Glasgow on Sunday as soon as the G20 is over.

The Group of Twenty (G20) is a collection of twenty of the world’s largest economies. Formed in 1999, it was conceived as a bloc that would bring together the most important industrialized and developing economies to discuss international economic and financial stability.
