Kristian Winfield: Suns blast Nets like Thanksgiving leftovers

Published by
New York Daily News

NEW YORK — The Phoenix Suns played a game the day after Thanksgiving. The Nets did not. That appeared to be the biggest difference between two heavyweight championship contenders in the Suns’ 113-107 shellacking of the Nets at Barclays Center on Saturday. At least, that’s the best-case scenario, however far-fetched it may be to count “playing on the back-end of a back-to-back” among an opponent’s advantages. The Nets looked out of sorts against the Suns, a trend that has been consistent against the NBA’s legitimate championship contenders. The Nets are now 0-5 against such teams, including add…

Blues show plenty of pep as they end grueling run with 6-3 win against Blue Jackets

Published by
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

ST. LOUIS — The Blues got to the end of a challenging stretch of their schedule on Saturday, one made even more challenging by a rash of COVID-19 cases and some significant offensive struggles. The Blues played 12 games over the course of three weeks, and Sunday and Monday will mark the first time they’ve had consecutive days off since Nov. 5 and 6, when they were 6-1-1. The Blues had gone 3-6-2 in the meantime, and after looking decidedly lethargic after the first period on Friday in Chicago, they somehow managed on Saturday to bring all sorts of energy into their game with Columbus. Backed b…

Former Panther Chris Driedger steals one in net for the Kraken, who end Florida’s home win streak

Published by
The Seattle Times

SUNRISE, Fla — Saturday night could have been another chapter in the story of the Kraken’s alleged revenge tour across the league. Goalie Chris Driedger was making his return after the Panthers left him exposed in expansion. It was also Alex Wennberg’s first game back since he left in free agency. Jared McCann is three teams removed, and Riley Sheahan one, but all four were familiar with FLA Live Arena. They handed their former team their first and only home loss of the season, on a night where the Panthers could have made history with the longest win streak at home to start the season. The Kr…

Fantasy football Week 12: Start and sit

Published by
The San Diego Union-Tribune

Here’s a look back at Week 11’s action, and fantasy advice for the week ahead: WEEK 11 RECAP Patriots 25, Falcons 0: It was essentially a 50-50 split between Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson. It’s highly possible this mirrors the situation in Denver between Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams going forward. Colts 41, Bills 15: Both Zack Moss and Devin Singletary are decent depth pieces, but the upside is limited despite playing in such a dynamic offense. Since Week 5, Moss is RB46 and Singletary is RB45 in standard leagues — RB45 and RB40 in PPR, respectively. Ravens 16, Bears 13: Darnell …

Florida prevails against FSU during a sloppy day at the Swamp

Published by
Orlando Sentinel

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Once among college football greatest rivalries, the latest Florida-Florida State game was a comedy of errors. A pair of 5-6 teams played down to their level of competition much of the day before the Gators came alive and pulled away for a 24-21 win Saturday in the Swamp. “We didn’t give up, kept fighting the whole time,” veteran defender Zachary Carter said. “We really played together as a team — and that’s the biggest thing.” The Gators’ first Power 5 win since Oct. 9 against Vanderbilt was flawed in every way imaginable — and inconceivable. FSU kicker Ryan Fitzgerald’s fa…

Michigan State buries Penn State in regular-season finale

Published by
The Detroit News

EAST LANSING, Mich. — In a scene more suited for the North Pole, Michigan State closed out a perfect season at home in thrilling fashion. With snow falling the entire afternoon, covering the Spartan Stadium field in a blanket of white, No. 12 Michigan State started quick on Saturday, then finished strong as Payton Thorne’s 20-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Reed on fourth-and-15 with just more than five minutes to play helped the Spartans to a 30-27 victory over Penn State. It was the perfect response for Michigan State after last week’s blowout at Ohio State as the Spartans (10-2, 7-2 Big Ten) …

King sends letter to Chairman of Committee on Exercise of Inalienable Rights of Palestinian People

His Majesty King Abdullah has sent a letter to Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP)

Cheikh Niang, on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, marked annually on 29 November.

In the letter, King Abdullah reiterated Jordan’s unwavering position in support of the just and legitimate rights of the Palestinians, especially their right to self-determination and establishing their independent, sovereign, and viable state on the 4 June 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, on the basis of the two-state solution and in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions, according to a Royal Court statement.

His Majesty said Jordan will continue its efforts to safeguard Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, under the Hashemite Custodianship, while supporting the steadfastness of Jerusalemites and preserving the historical and legal status quo in the holy city.

There can be no peace in the region as long as the occupation continues, the King noted, stressing the need to step up efforts to break the stalemate in the peace process and support measures to rebuild trust and prevent escalations and any violations that could undermine peace prospects, such as illegal Israeli settlement activities, the appropriation of land, the demolition of homes, and the expulsion of Palestinians from their homes.

His Majesty said the international community must support the Palestinian Authority to enable it to undertake its duties and responsibilities towards the Palestinian people and to support the prospects of peace.

The King stressed the importance of providing all means of support to sustain the work of UNRWA, in accordance with its UN mandate, until a just and comprehensive solution that addresses all final status issues is reached, safeguarding Palestinian rights in line with UN resolutions, foremost of which is Resolution 194, and ensuring the right of return and compensation to Palestinian refugees.

Also in the letter, His Majesty expressed appreciation of the committee’s efforts in defence of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

Gov’t to increase capital expenditures next year: Finance Minister, 2nd, final add

In this context, Shboul urged everyone to adhere to means of prevention in terms of wearing masks, maintaining physical distancing, and using sterilizers, in addition to receiving vaccinations, in order to continue with the normal life.

With regard to Jordan’s financial obligations as a result of hosting Syrian refugees, Shboul indicated that Jordan hosts 1.3 million Syrian refugees on its territory. “Most countries in the world commend Jordan’s humanitarian role, but the obligations of the international community towards the Kingdom are less than the financial burdens borne by the state treasury, in addition to the pressure on the infrastructure.”

In response to a question during the press conference, Shboul emphasized that the “declaration of intent” between Jordan, the UAE and Israel doesn’t have any financial impact on the Kingdom, and is not included in the draft law of the 2022 general budget.

He pointed out that next year the government will include the national carrier project in the budget, which is the state’s strategic project, as it will desalinate water in Aqaba, and hence, providing Jordan with 300 million cubic meters of water.

Gov’t to increase capital expenditures next year: Finance Minister, 1st add

Al-Ississ added that public sector salaries still constitute the vast majority of current expenditures at 66 per cent, followed by the public debt service at 15.6 per cent, explaining that civil apparatus salaries amount to JD1.9 billion in 2022.

He pointed out that employment is not the role of the government, but rather ensuring financial and monetary stability of the Jordanian economy that encourages the private sector to invest to create jobs, underlining the importance of the government’s role in preparing young people to enter the labor market and raising the competitiveness of the private market.

For his part, Minister Shboul said that the government will refer the two draft laws of the general budget and budgets of government units for the fiscal year 2022 to the Parliament, following their approval by the Cabinet.

He pointed out that the government was legally committed to approving the two bills before the end of November, and one month before the start of the fiscal year, noting that the 2022 budget comes in exceptional circumstances that the Kingdom is going through as a result of the continuing impacts of the Covid pandemic.

“The 2022 budget reflects the beginning of economic recovery, especially after the national economy has suffered difficult repercussions during the past two years as a result of the pandemic that affected the global economy as a whole,” Shboul said. “Our economy was negatively affected by the decline in exports and the decline in the flow of foreign investments.”

Shboul explained that the draft law of the general budget is an reflection of the government’s overall economic policy for the coming year, and also translates the government’s 2021-2023 economic work priorities program.

He also referred to the issuance of Defense Order No. (35), which will tighten procedures on individuals and institutions in the public and private sectors, as entry to them will be prohibited except for recipients of the two doses of the vaccine.

He indicated that the government gave the opportunity for nearly a month for non-recipients to receive the vaccine, before activating the new defense order at the beginning of next year.
