Inaugural UAE-Netherlands Week Begins in Celebration of 50 Years of Partnership

The inaugural UAE-Netherlands Week began virtually today, hosted by the United Arab Emirates and Kingdom of the Netherlands from May 30 until June 5, 2021.

The week comes against the backdrop of the two countries’ celebration of nearly fifty years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, as well as the UAE’s fiftieth anniversary since its founding as a nation.

In the opening session of the forum, titled “The UAE-Netherlands Friendship – 50 Years in the Making,” officials from the UAE and the Netherlands discussed the political, economic, and cultural ties that link the two nations.

Taking part in the session, His Excellency Omar Saif Ghobash, Assistant Minister for Public and Cultural Diplomacy at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, stated: “Today’s convening of high-level officials from government and civil society in the UAE and Netherlands reflects our strong desire to strengthen bilateral ties in all areas. For nearly half a century, our two countries have served as committed partners, and the activities of the UAE-Netherlands Week will enable us to continue building upon this enduring friendship.”

Her Excellency Hissa Abdulla Alotaiba, UAE Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, remarked: “The UAE and the Netherlands have much to offer each other.

Historically, our peoples have long valued cultural, educational, and tourism exchange, and at the governmental level, our two countries have worked together in times of crisis to address challenges to food security and boost scientific innovation for the betterment of our societies. It is our genuine honor today to explore additional pathways of Emirati-Dutch cooperation, and we look forward to hosting future iterations of the UAE-Netherlands Week.”

For his part, HE Lody Embrechts, Dutch Ambassador to the UAE, commented: “The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the UAE is grateful for this wonderful chance to highlight the width and depth of our longstanding relationship. The first day also offered a session on youth in the UAE and the Netherlands, wherein speakers from Abu Dhabi Youth Hub and the Dutch Embassy discussed efforts to generate opportunities for youth and empower them in key fields.

Other sessions throughout the week will address diverse topics, including ways to strengthen cooperation in the arts and cultural sectors, promote food security and energy efficiency, empower women in STEM fields, and foster entrepreneurship and innovation.

Attendees will also discuss Dutch participation in Expo 2020 Dubai, where the Netherlands will host a microclimate pavilion focused on the nexus between water, food, and energy security.

UAE Rulers congratulate Croatian President on Statehood Day

President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has sent a congratulatory message to President Zoran Milanovic of Croatia, on the occasion of his country’s Statehood Day celebrations.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, sent similar messages to President Milanovic.

Their Highnesses also sent congratulatory messages to the Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic on the occasion.

UAE Gives Assurance of Cooperation with Latin America and Caribbean During Security Council Membership

Minister of State for International Cooperation H.E. Reem Al Hashimy and Assistant Minister for Public and Cultural Diplomacy Omar Ghobash met virtually with members of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (GRULAC) at the United Nations. The objective of the meeting was to introduce the UAE candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the term 2022-2023.

During the virtual meeting, the ministers reflected on the UAE’s longstanding relations with Latin America and the Caribbean. Minister Al Hashimy said: “The way we will approach our seat at the Security Council is to ensure that we proactively listen, learn, and reflect the views of the entire membership. Peace and security are best served when the international community stands together.”

Assistant Minister Ghobash said: “Since the founding of the UAE 49 years ago, the physical distance between the Gulf and GRULAC members has not stopped our countries from pursuing deeper political ties and economic cooperation. The UAE has also been proud to partner with the Latin America and Caribbean region on development and humanitarian activities – most recently on supplies of personal protective equipment for COVID-19 relief.”

The ministers outlined the UAE’s priorities of the UAE’s “Stronger United” campaign for a Security Council seat, including its four main pillars: securing peace, advancing inclusion, building resilience, and spurring innovation. They reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to collaborating with the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean and also expressed hope for receiving support from the region during the elections on 11 June 2021.

The UAE is a candidate for the Arab seat of the UN Security Council for the term 2022-2023 and was endorsed by the League of Arab States in 2012 and the Asia-Pacific Group in 2020. The UAE previously served as an elected member on the UN Security Council in 1986-1987.

CGTN: China gears up for sci-tech development, focusing more on self-reliance

BEIJING, May 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Almost two weeks ago, China succeeded in its first Mars landing, attracting world’s attention to the important milestone in China’s space exploration.

On Friday, science and technology as strategic support to national development, focusing on self-sufficiency and innovation, was once again highlighted in the country’s development roadmap with the convention of the 10th national congress of the China Association for Science and Technology in Beijing.

Sci-tech self-sufficiency and self-reliance

Accelerated efforts are needed in building China into a leading country in science and technology and achieving sci-tech self-reliance and self-sufficiency at higher levels, said Chinese President Xi Jinping while addressing the meeting attended by about 3,000 people.

Noting the importance of making breakthroughs in core technologies in key fields, President Xi stressed building a modern science and technology system with the innovation confederations led by leading enterprises, supported by universities and institutions, and coordinated innovation entities.

He pointed out that it is necessary to spur on the problem solving in major sci-tech tasks, targeting the most urgent and pressing problems, and proceed from the immediate and long-term needs of the country.

Basic and original research are critical in expanding new cognitive frontiers, he added.

China’s pursuit of independence in scientific innovation is reflected in its various achievements, including the Beidou Navigation Satellite System, the space exploration including lunar and Mars probes and the construction of China’s own space station, and the deep-sea manned submersible Fendouzhe. The country has also developed its own high-speed railway technologies, 5G communication technologies and artificial intelligence.

He also stressed the role of national laboratories and scientific research institutions, high-level research universities, and leading enterprises in science and technology, calling on them to make more strategic and key scientific and technological achievements and strive to solve major scientific and technological problems that affect China’s overall development and long-term interests.

Important are efforts in cultivating top-notch scientific and technological personnel with global influence, steadily supporting a number of innovation teams, and training more high-quality technical and skilled personnel, Xi said.

Innovation-driven development strategy

President Xi restressed the importance of innovation in the pursuit of developing and shaping the new development advantages mentioned in China’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) for national economic and social development and the long-range objectives through to the year 2035.

In 2016, the Chinese government set the target to make China one of the most innovative countries by 2020 and a leading innovator by 2030, as well as a leading global S&T power by the 100th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 2049.

Efforts are needed in deepening the reform of the sci-tech system and form a basic system that supports all-around innovation, Xi said, adding that full play should be given to the role of the state as an organizer of major scientific and technological innovations.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as national strategic scientific and technological forces, should play a leading role, Xi noted, adding that the China Association for Science and Technology should shoulder the responsibility of the bridge between the government and the scientific and technological workers.

He called for efforts to get deeply engaged in global scientific and technological governance in areas such as public health and climate change, and make Chinese science and technology to contribute more to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

The Chinese president also extended greetings to sci-tech workers across the country ahead of China’s national sci-tech workers’ day, which falls on May 30.

في مايو 2018، كتبت وانغ تيانجياو، التي كانت حينئذٍ تلميذة في الصف الثالث من مدرسة بيليانغ للجيش الأحمر الابتدائية، رسالة إلى الرئيس الصيني شي جين بينغ نيابةً عن زملائها في الفصل تخبره فيها عن تجربتها في تعلم التاريخ الثوري وتطوير المدرسة.

وقد رد شي على الطلاب بعدها بوقتٍ قصير في رسالة وشجعهم على نقل الجين الأحمر من جيل إلى جيل. حيث كتب شي أنه يأمل في أن يقدر الطلاب الوقت وأن يدرسوا بجد وبقلب ممتن، وأن يكبروا ليكونوا مفيدين للبلاد والشعب والمجتمع في المستقبل.

مدرسة بيليانغ للجيش الأحمر الابتدائية هي أثر للتاريخ الثوري في المدينة. تأسست عام 1955 في الموقع الثوري القديم – موقع اجتماع تشينجيابو.

وفي عام 2000، زارت كي شين، والدة شي، المدرسة. وعندما رأت الفصول الدراسية المتهالكة والمرافق القديمة، حشدت أسرتها بأكملها للتبرع بمبلغ 150 ألف يوان (18116 دولارًا) لنقل المدرسة إلى موقع جديد وإعادة بنائها.

وقد صرح باي وي، أمين فرع الحزب في بلدة تشاوجين، قائلًا: “كان نصيب الفرد من الدخل في عام 2015 يبلغ 8,848 يوانًا. وفي عام 2020، ارتفع دخل الفرد ليصبح 15,235 يوانًا. “لقد كانت البلدة فقيرة ومتخلفة. وكان الشباب يتركونها ولا تتزوج الفتيات فيها. ولكن خلال العامين الأخيرين عاد إليها 16 من طلاب الكليات.”

PRESIDENT AOUN CONGRATULATES ASSAD FOR RE-ELECTION

President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun sent a congratulation cable to Syrian President, Bashar Al-Assad, for his re-election as President of the Syrian Arab Republic.

Telegram Text:

“Dear President, Dr. Bashar Al-Assad,

Respected President of the Syrian Arab Republic,

I sincerely congratulate you on your re-election as the President of the brotherly Syrian Arab Republic. I hope that efforts will continue in the next stage to stabilize your country and restore cohesion among all its parties, so that the brotherly Syrian people will enjoy security and prosperity, and the process of the return of the displaced to their homeland will be consolidated in order to participate in the march of its advancement.

I take this opportunity to assert the depth of the historical ties between our two countries, looking forward to developing our bilateral relations in all that serve the supreme interests of our peoples”.

“NO DELAY OR POSTPONEMENT OF ELECTION DATE,” REASSURES EL-KHALIL

Member of the “Development and Liberation” Parliamentary Bloc, MP Anwar El-Khalil, affirmed that “the parliamentary elections will take place on time next year, without any delay or postponement.”

He stressed that “House Speaker Nabih Berri insists that the elections be held on time,” adding that “the Speaker cannot accept any parliament mandate extension for any reason whatsoever.”

“Lebanon’s position will grow weaker before the international community, and the parliament will lose its domestic and international legitimacy if this democratic election does not take place within its constitutional date,” El-Khalil underlined, during a meeting held at his Hasbaya residence today to explain the election law proposed by his Bloc.

“The elections will take place on time between the first of March and May, that is, during the 60 days prior to the end of the current parliament’s term,” the MP maintained.

Meanwhile, El-Khalil called for “speeding up the formation of a rescue government with a mission to stop the country’s downfall,” and renewed his call to “remove the conditions set by some, because the financial and economic collapses are unprecedented and constitute a real challenge to the survival of Lebanon.”
