39 facilities warned for violating public health standards

The inspection teams of the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) on Tuesday warned 39 businesses for failure to adhere to public safety requirements.

A statement by the GAM on Wednesday said that the teams carried out some 654 visits to various facilities, during which 10 establishments were closed, while 26 others were fined for flouting health and professional conditions.

Construction of new Ruwaished Hospital 70% complete

The construction of the new Ruwaished Hospital is proceeding with an accomplishment of 70 per cent, Director of Ruwaished Government Hospital Musa Abu Aqoula said Wednesday.

Abu Aqoula told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that the soon-to-be completed facility covers an area of 3,000 square metres, with a capacity of 30 beds, along with an emergency department, two operating theatres and an intensive care unit.

He explained that the hospital, funded by the United Arab Emirates at a cost of JD8-10 million, also includes pediatric, gynecology, orthopedics and internal departments, while nephrology and urology departments will be opened soon by the Ministry of Health.

“Once the construction is completed, the hospital will be provided with advanced medical devices and equipment,” he added, noting that it constitutes “a qualitative leap” in terms of the services provided to citizens and residents of the Kingdom’s far-eastern district.

Awadallah, Sharif Hassan referred to State Security Court

The Public Prosecutor of the State Security Court (SSC) on Wednesday issued an indictment against Bassim Ibrahim Youssef Awadallah and Sharif “Abdulrahman-Hassan” Zaid Hussein Al Hashem and sent the case file to the SSC for further legal action.

Transport minister: Traffic fees on Jordanian trucks heading to Egypt abolished

Minister of Transport, Wajih Azaizeh, announced passage fees for Jordanian trucks departing to Egypt, estimated at JD90 per each truck, are abolished.

In a press statement on Wednesday, Azaizeh said the Arab Bridge Maritime Company (ABMC), the exclusive carrier operating between the two countries, decided to reduce cost of truck permits by about JD36 in both directions, and slash fees for excess weights from JD14 to about JD11.

The minister said these measures, which come after coordination with his Egyptian counterpart, Kamel Al-Wazir, will increase and facilitate trade exchange between the two countries.

Award-winning Jordanian novelist honored

Jalal Barjas, the Jordanian author who has recently awarded the 14th edition of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF), was honored Tuesday by Minister of Culture Ali al-Ayed.

Barjas, a trained aeronautical engineer, journalist and author, won the prestigious award for his “Dafater al-Warraq” (Notebooks of the Bookseller) which received wide Arab acclaim for its depth and intense poetic language.

Chosen from a shortlist of six novels, the book, in around 370 pages, tells the story of Ibrahim, a bookseller and voracious reader, who loses his stall and finds himself captive to a life of homelessness, after suffering from schizophrenia.

Assuming the protagonists of the novels he has read, Ibrahim carries out a series of robberies, thefts and murders, and tries to commit suicide before meeting the woman who changes the course of his life.

During the honoring ceremony, the Minister of Culture commended Barjas for “presenting Jordanian literature to the world, enriching the local cultural product, and making it more widely visible”.

For his part, the novelist said he was happy for winning the prestigious award, “especially as it coincided with nation’s celebrations of its independence anniversary and the centenary of the Jordanian state”.

Secretary-General of the Ministry of Culture Hazza Barari said that Barjas, through his novel, “presented the crisis of the Arab intellectual, with an accurate description of the Jordanian place and Jordanian personality”.

In addition to receiving $50,000, the prize value, the Madaba-born novelist will see his book, published by The Arabic Institute for Research and Publishing, translated into English.

Senate president: Political will available to push Jordan’s comprehensive reform drive

Senate President, Faisal Fayez, affirmed on Wednesday, that “a serious” political will is available to push the “desired” comprehensive reform, in all political, economic, administrative and social fields.

The changing policies are necessary as Jordan enters the 2nd bicentennial, he said, adding that various challenges facing the country couldn’t be addressed as was previously done prior to the “Arab Spring” and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Addressing an audience at the Upper House, comprised of popular figures, representing various political and social forces from Zarqa governorate, Fayez raised several national issues pertaining to political and administrative reform, the legislation regulating the Kingdom’s political life, and the most prominent economic challenges, foremost is the “exacerbating” poverty and unemployment rates to “unprecedented” levels.

Fayez stressed the importance of paying attention to “large and vital” investment projects, supporting small and entrepreneurial enterprises, and exploiting arable lands to reduce problems of unemployment and poverty.

Based on His Majesty King Abdullah II’s discussion papers on Jordan’s future and comprehensive reform, he said ad hoc committees are studying the “most prominent ideas, visions and solutions” discussed at dialogues on various issues.”

Fayez called on confronting all attempts aimed at targeting Jordan’s stability and security by strengthening the “internal front” and its cohesion.

In turn, the attendees highlighted the current challenges, foremost is the “desired” political reform and legislation regulating political life, finding a consensual election law, addressing administrative slack and combating corruption.

Also figured high were the attendees’ demands on raising level of services provided in all regions countrywide, solving problems of poverty, unemployment and indebtedness, and creating a “stimulating and attractive” investment environment for major projects to stimulate national economy and better utilizing Kingdom’s tourism potentials.
