Joint House panel endorses amendments to GAM draft law

The joint Lower House “Legal and Administrative” committee, headed by MP Ali Tarawneh, passed the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) bill, which was approved by the government.

Speaking at a meeting on Sunday, Tarawneh said the committee endorsed amendments to the draft law after 26 sessions were held to hear expert views.

The increasing population growth in Amman, Jordan’s the largest city, requires an “advanced strategic” approach to contribute to providing services in the “desired” manner, implementing the GAM’s vision and mission, managing its administrative and executive manpower to carry out the tasks and addressing any legislative defects to improve services provided to citizens, the lawmaker said.

To ensure GAM’s transparent elections, Tarawneh said the draft law lays out the mechanism to appoint and elect GAM’s members, to clarify procedures for their election and the body supervising the electoral process.

For his part, President of GAM’s committee, Nasser Shawarbeh, said the draft law seeks to raise efficiency and governance of municipal services in the capital, which would alleviate burdens on citizens, in line with visions of His Majesty King Abdullah II, aiming to provide “the best services” to citizens, and manage crises and risks facing the capital.

On the bill’s goals, Shawarbeh pointed out that the law enables GAM to preserve Amman’s landscape and aesthetics, and its civilizational and cultural heritage, while giving a “distinctive” urban identity based on “proper” planning and keeping pace with developments.
