EBRD forecasts growth by 1.5% for Jordanian economy

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) said Jordan’s economic growth is expected to rebound to 1.5 per cent in 2021.

According to its latest Regional Economic Prospects, published Tuesday, the EBRD indicated that the growth is owed to the lingering effects of the pandemic, a lackluster recovery in tourism and fiscal tightening to rein in the Kingdom’s growing public debt.

In 2020, the Jordanian economy contracted for the first time in 30 years, shrinking 1.6 per cent according to the Jordanian government’s estimates, the statement pointed out. It said that the financial and agriculture sectors were the principal sources of growth, tourism, the main driver of growth in recent years, declined 76 per cent on the year.

In 2022, growth is seen picking up to 2.2 per cent as Jordan advances reforms and global tourism resumes. The main risks to the outlook include the erosion of competitiveness, regional instability and a slower-than-expected recovery in partner economies, the report noted.

The EBRD also raised its economic growth forecast for the southern and eastern Mediterranean (SEMED) region to 3.5 per cent in 2021. The return to growth follows a 2.1 per cent decline in gross domestic product (GDP) in 2020. However, the Bank warned that the speed of recovery would vary from economy to economy, reflecting the slow recovery in tourism, mounting fiscal pressures and political uncertainty across the region.

For 2022, the EBRD economists expect continued growth of 4.6 per cent, provided the region’s economies are supported by structural reforms, a recovery in foreign investment and stronger trade flows.

Tunisian envoy visits Zarqa Chamber of Commerce, discusses economic cooperation

Tunisia’s Ambassador to Jordan, Khalid Sohaili, and President of the Zarqa Chamber of Commerce, Hussein Shreim, discussed ways of economic cooperation and overcoming obstacles facing trade exchange between the Kingdom and Tunisia.

They also discussed establishing a partnership between the Zarqa Chamber of Commerce and its Tunisian counterpart and the signing of a twinning memorandum of understanding between the two chambers.

“Key Tunisian exports are clothing and textiles, agricultural products, mechanical goods, phosphates and chemicals, electrical equipment, spare parts for mechanical devices, cars and aircraft,” Sohaili explained.

The Tunisian ambassador praised the attractive investment environment in Zarqa Governorate, northwest Amman, given its geographical location and its proximity to borders with neighboring countries.

For his part, Shreim stressed the importance of exchanging visits of delegations and trade missions as an important step to activate their trade exchanges, and the need for cooperation in the investment and tourism field between the two countries.

Shreim indicated that the volume of trade exchange between Jordan and Tunisia in 2020 was modest, and does not rise to the size of the common ambition of the two brotherly countries, as the value of national exports to Tunisia amounted to $5.98 million, while the volume of imports from Tunisia for the same year amounted to $13.95 million.

The two sides discussed the possibility of establishing a direct partnership between the Jordanian and Tunisian sides, such as marketing Tunisian olive oil to neighboring markets, the European Union and the United States.

The meeting was attended by Tunisian Foreign Affairs Adviser Al-Assad Shawqi Al-Masli, Commercial Attache Atef Al-Ghariani and members of the Zarqa Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

AND seize large quantity of drugs, arrest 2 suspects

The Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) Tuesday seized 300,000 drug pills which were in the possession of two persons who were trying to transport them off-road in the desert.

The Public Security Department spokesperson said in a statement AND personnel were tipped off about two individuals who intended to transport a large quantity of drugs off-road in the desert and promptly began investigating.

The investigation team, he added, verified the information, determined the time to move the contraband and laid several ambushes along the routes the smugglers intended to take.

It said one of the patrols spotted the terrain vehicle used by the smugglers and stopped it after a chase, arresting the two suspects and seizing the drugs and a firearm.

The case was referred to the State Security Court prosecutor, he added.

Tourist arrivals on the rise, says minister

The numbers of Arab and foreign tourists coming to the Kingdom bode well for the recovery of the tourism sector as they see monthly increases, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Nayef Fayez said on Tuesday.

The minister added that the real solution for the recovery of this sector is the return of foreign tourism, stressing that Jordan is fully ready to receive tourists from abroad.

Fayez made his remarks during a session entitled “Post-Covid Tourism in Jordan”, organized by the Center for Defending the Freedom of Journalists (CDFJ) in cooperation with the “Zain” company on Monday.

The tourism sector is considered one of the most affected sectors by the pandemic, he said, noting that Jordan’s tourism income in 2020 plunged to JD1 billion compared to JD4.1 billion in 2019.

Fayez also stressed that the government has put in place a set of measures to mitigate the fallout of the pandemic on this sector.

Speaking about the COVID-19 vaccine, the minister indicated that the tourism sector was one of the first sectors that reached the highest rates of staff vaccination, with a rate of 90 percent.

The national program “Our Jordan is Paradise” aims at stimulating and revitalizing domestic tourism, and encouraging citizens to visit dozens of tourist destinations, Fayez stressed, pointing out that more than 50 percent of the cost of the trips are covered by the Ministry and the Jordan Tourism Board (JTB).

Police make an arrest over roadside body discovery

The Public Security Department’s (PSD) Criminal Investigation Unit apprehended a man, who confessed to committing murder and dumping the body on the side of the road.

Spokesperson of the PSD said in a statement on Tuesday that the main operations room in Zarqa received a report of a body on the side of a road in the Dhlail area. Officers then arrived at the scene and opened an investigation into the case.

The forensic examiner and the public prosecutor conducted a preliminary examination on the scene, and confirmed that the body was of a male, in his thirties, who appeared to have suffered multiple stab wounds in addition to strangulation marks on his neck.

The spokesperson said that the Zarqa Criminal Investigation Unit identified the main suspect in the case in record time, and made an arrest. Upon questioning the suspect, he confessed that he committed the murder following a row with the victim.

Investigation into the case is still ongoing, he added, noting that the case will be transferred to the public prosecutor.

Chairman of the Royal Committee to Modernise the Political System Samir Rifai announced Tuesday that the panel has commenced work and will submit its recommendations before October 1 in implementation of the royal letter ordering its formation.

The committee’s mission, according to the royal letter, is “to put forward new draft election and political parties laws, look into the necessary constitutional amendments connected to the two laws and the mechanisms of parliamentary work and provide recommendations on developing legislation regulating local administration, expanding participation in decision-making, and creating a political and legislative environment conducive to the active engagement of youth and women in public life.”

Rifai told a press conference at the Royal Cultural Centre today that the responsibility of the 92-member committee is to develop consensual draft laws that guarantee the gradual transition to fully achieve future goals and serve the citizens in their present and future.

The committee’s efforts through its six sub-committees, he said, are focused on presenting outputs on the pursuit of the development and modernisation process that ensures the right of Jordanians to practice a parliamentary and partisan life that advances their democracy and lives and helps to fulfil their wishes as the country enters its second centennial, as asserted by His Majesty in his letter to form the committee.

Rifai said the committee’s members are all fully aware that they are facing a historic mission towards the country and the citizens, adding “we are all working within this framework.”

He said that His Majesty ordered the committee to present a vision within a clear timeframe to meet the set goals, pointing out that its task is to lay out a political system that establishes a culture of citizenship and strong platform-based parties in the Lower House of Parliament.

The largely diverse makeup of the committee, he said, reflects the richness of society and Jordanians’ intellectual and cultural backgrounds in all their spectra and origins, adding that the committee is the first whose outcome His Majesty guarantees will be adopted by the government and promptly passed to parliament.

He assured that the committee functions without outside influences or interferences, and that it has no ready-made draft laws, noting the complementary work of the sub-committees.

Rifai said the committee takes guidance from the Discussion Papers of His Majesty the King, which put forward a progressive vision for modernisation and development, to come up with a legislative framework that lays the foundations of an effective partisan life persuasive of voters to arrive at a parliament with platform-based blocs and currents, and to lay the ground for an advanced phase in how the executive authority functions based on the constitution.

Rifai, a former Prime Minister, said that the government had already sent a draft municipalities and decentralisation bill to the Lower House, adding that the draft political parties and election laws have nothing to do with the current legislation, and that the issue of quota now being discussed concerns the women’s quota.

“Everyone agrees that the partisan culture is weak, and that partisan work needs platforms,” he said, adding that the committee’s members currently pay visits across the country to be tuned to all views and suggestions.

He stressed the need for the current Nineteenth Jordanian Parliament to pass the new draft laws, noting that the members of the legislative authority “are the ones who ultimately decide whether to accept our recommendations,” and adding that the parties need time to contest the elections after the passage of the new bill.

Rifai said that the women’s sub-committee completed its recommendations and is to pass them the other sub-committees- the parties, election and local administration, adding that the youth sub-committee will pass its own proposals to the others after finalizing its work.

He also pointed to ideas under debate about the election and parties drafts, and said that the two ad hoc sub-committees will meet next week to examine their proposals.

UK reports increase in daily COVID fatalities

COVID-19 killed 23 people in the UK Tuesday, compared with three Monday, taking the death toll to 128,126, according to the Department of Health and social Care (DHSC).

The DHSC said more than 20,480 people tested positive for the highly contagious respiratory disease, compared with 22,870 yesterday, as the caseload tops 4.77.
