90 Jewish radical settlers break into Al-Aqsa Mosque

Some 90 Jewish extremist settlers, led by radical rabbi Yehuda Glick, on Wednesday stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque / Haram Al Sharif compound in occupied East Jerusalem.

Eyewitnesses told Petra’s reporter in Ramallah that today’s raid by the radical settlers was carried out in small groups from Al- Magharebah Gate under heavy protection of Israeli police.

The settlers provocatively toured the Al-Aqsa yards and performed Talmudic rites, while Muslim worshipers and the mosque’s guards peacefully confronted, the eyewitnesses added.

House association, Turkish envoy talk joint cooperation

Jordanian-Asia and Oceania Parliamentary Friendship Association discussed on Wednesday, with the Turkish Ambassador to Jordan, Ismail Armaz, parliamentary, tourism and educational cooperation.

Speaking at the meeting, the association’s head, MP Abdul Rahim Al-Ma’aya, valued Turkey’s stances towards the Palestinian cause, especially after the recent Israeli war on Gaza Strip, and Ankara’s support for the Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

Al-Ma’aya called on reinstating free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries, enhancing joint trade exchange, and exchanging expertise, especially in the tourism, educational and parliamentary fields.

The association’s members, meanwhile, praised Jordanian -Turkish, calling on increasing the number of Turkish scholarships for Jordanian students, enhancing cultural exchange, and trade, tourism, medical and parliamentary relations.

The lawmakers also urged extending assistance to the Kingdom to address water shortages and implement Jordan’s “National Water Carrier” project.

The envoy, for his part, praised the bilateral relations, and development that Jordan witnessed in various fields, noting that his country supports the Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, and the Palestinian cause.

The diplomat said all the lawmakers’ observations will be channelled to his country’s concerned authorities for study.

King attends graduation of 50th class of pilot cadets

His Majesty King Abdullah, the Supreme Commander of the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army, on Wednesday attended the graduation of the 50th class of pilot cadets at King Hussein Air College.

King Abdullah was received by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Maj. Gen. Yousef Hneiti, the commander of the Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF), and the college’s commandant.

The graduates received their wings, and top achievers were honoured at the graduation.

His Majesty also attended an air show by RJAF fighter jets and helicopters.

His Royal Highness Prince Feisal bin Al Hussein, Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Bisher Khasawneh, a number of senior officials and officers, military attachés, and the graduates’ parents attended the ceremony.

Transport minister, Syrian delegation talk smoother border movement

Minister of Transport, Wajih Azaiza, said Jordan views all sectors in an “integrated” manner, focusing on the importance of transport in developing and advancing the economy.

The minister made the remarks at a meeting Wednesday with Syrian delegation, headed by head of the Federation of the Syrian Chambers of Commerce (FSCC), Mohamed Abou El-Hoda El-Lahham.

Azayza listened to demands raised during the discussions, stressing the need for joint cooperation to serve common interests.

For his part, Chairman of Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC), Nael Kabariti, said the trade sector is looking forward to facilitating the transport movement, and to facilitate procedures at the border crossings.

At the meeting, the Syrian delegation raised a number of demands, most notably facilitating procedures at border crossings.

King receives Palestinian president, reaffirms Jordan’s support for Palestinian people

His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday reaffirmed Jordan’s steadfast support for the Palestinian people in gaining their just and legitimate rights, and establishing an independent, sovereign, and viable Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

King Abdullah made these remarks at a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at Al Husseiniya Palace, which was held after the fourth trilateral Jordanian-Egyptian-Iraqi summit in Baghdad, within the framework of Jordanian diplomatic efforts led by His Majesty ahead of an upcoming working visit to Washington, DC.

At the meeting, attended by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, His Majesty called for translating the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip into an extended truce that pushes towards a political solution that fulfils the Palestinian people’s rights.

The King also underlined the need to step up international efforts to reach just and comprehensive peace, on the basis of the two-state solution, and to preserve the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem, stressing that Israel must cease all illegal violations and measures in the Palestinian Territories.

His Majesty reiterated Jordan’s commitment to its steadfast historical and religious role in safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, in line with the Hashemite Custodianship, stressing that the Kingdom will continue its efforts to support the Palestinians.

In addition, His Majesty commended the US administration’s recent decision to resume support for UNRWA as a positive humanitarian step that will help the agency continue its educational, health, and relief services to refugees, in accordance with its UN mandate.

For his part, President Abbas noted Jordan’s pivotal role, under His Majesty’s leadership, in supporting and defending the rights of the Palestinian people in the international arena, as well as efforts towards reaching just and comprehensive peace.

The Palestinian president also stressed the importance of the Hashemite Custodianship of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan, and General Intelligence Department Director Maj. Gen. Ahmad Husni attended the meeting on the Jordanian side.

On the Palestinian side, Foreign Minister Riad Malki, Fatah central committee member and head of civil affairs Hussein Sheikh, General Intelligence Service Director Majid Faraj, Senior Diplomatic Adviser to the President Majdi Khaldi, and Palestinian Ambassador to Jordan Atallah Khairi were in attendance.

Deputy PM, Iraqi delegation discuss public service cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Local Administration, Tawfiq Krishan, met on Wednesday, with Chairman of Iraqi Federal Service Council, Mahmoud Al-Tamimi, and his accompanying delegation for talks to strengthen joint cooperation relations.

Speaking at the meeting, Krishan noted the visit seeks to exchange expertise, coordination, and bolster capabilities of the two countries’ public administration bodies, which will be positively reflected on level of services provided to citizens.

At the bilateral level, Krishan affirmed His Majesty King Abdullah II’s interest in strengthening aspects of joint cooperation and coordination between Jordan and Iraq in all fields, especially in the public administration reform and modernization areas, and benefiting from both sides’ “accumulated” expertise in the civil service domain.

Krishan pointed to the King’s continued keenness to expedite implementation of the administrative reform and development program, and enhance capabilities of public sector employees.

For his part, Al-Tamimi said outcomes of the tripartite summit held last Sunday in Baghdad with participation of His Majesty King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, should be reflected on strengthening cooperation and coordination in public administration and civil service areas.

Pointing to the importance of benefiting from Jordan’s experience in public administration and civil service fields, the Iraqi official added that Iraqi delegation’s visit comes within framework of strengthening joint cooperation and coordination aspects in the fields of human resource management and public sector planning.

Al-Tamimi praised the King’s efforts and his continued keenness to support Iraq and enhance bilateral coordination and cooperation, in a way that reflects positively on serving common interests.

Head of Jordan’s Civil Service Bureau (CSB), Sameh Al-Nasser, who attended the talks, said the Iraqi delegation’s visit was “fruitful” in exchanging expertise in human resource management and public sector planning, praising Iraq’s capabilities in this regard.

FTAs enabled Jordan to access global markets, says JEA chief

President of the Jordan Exporters Association (JEA) Omar Abu Wishah has stressed the importance of free trade agreements that link the Kingdom with several countries and said they enabled the Jordanian industry to enter global markets.

Speaking to Petra, Abu Wishah said that there is a wide export opportunity under these agreements signed with various economic blocs, but it is still not exploited in the required manner, noting that such chance would contribute to expanding the export base, increasing production and creating more jobs.

His Majesty King Abdullah, during a meeting with industrial sector representatives on Tuesday, urged the sector to build on free trade agreements, stressing the importance of increasing the sector’s competitiveness and stimulating exports.

King Abdullah noted that Jordanian industries have seen success stories despite challenges, highlighting the sector’s key role in meeting local demand for basic goods throughout the COVID-19 pandemic without interruption.

Jordan is bound by a number of bilateral and collective free trade agreements with many countries across the world, foremost of which is joining the World Trade Organization and liberalizing trade with the United States and Canada, in addition to the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, the Greater Arab Free Trade Agreement and Singapore, JEA chief said.

Trade minister, Syrian delegation talk joint economic cooperation

Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, Maha Ali, stressed the importance of joint Jordanian-Syrian action to enhance economic cooperation, especially in trade and investment fields, to reach understandings that achieve interests of the two countries’ private sectors.

Speaking at a meeting on Wednesday, with a delegation representing the Federation of Syrian Chambers of Commerce (FSCC), the minister was briefed on the “positive” outcomes of talks held remotely with Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Mohammad Samer al-Khalil last Thursday, which focused on developing a preliminary vision to discuss mechanisms of Jordanian -Syrian economic cooperation in various fields and update the joint action plan drawn up in March 2020.

Chairman of Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC), Nael Kabariti, who attended the talks, said Jordanian and Syrian trade sector are making “unrelenting” efforts to activate inter-trade, increase economic cooperation frameworks to serve common interests of the two countries’ private sectors , and address difficulties triggered by Covid-19 pandemic and its economic repercussions.

The delegation, for their part, affirmed their readiness to work with the Jordanian private sector to increase trade and investment cooperation, especially at this stage, which involves many challenges and difficulties resulting from high freight rates.

To address inter-trade challenges, the delegation presented proposals to increase economic cooperation, calling on removing difficulties facing joint trade between the two countries.

GDP grows by 0.3% in Q1

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) inched up by 0.3 percent in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period of last year, official figures revealed.

According to the Department of Statistics (DoS), preliminary estimates showed that some economic sectors achieved growth during the first quarter of this year compared to the first quarter of last year.

The extractive industries sector, it said, achieved the highest growth rate during this period at 15.3 percent, followed by the agriculture sector, 2.9 percent, the finance, insurance and business services sector by 2.1 percent, and the government sector by 1 percent.

The figures also indicated that the social and personal services sector had the lowest growth rate, down by 3 percent, followed by the transport, storage, and communications sector by 2.3 percent, and the construction sector by 1.8 percent.

On the sectors contributions to the overall growth rate in the first quarter of this year, the figures indicated that the finance, insurance and business services sector contributed the most at 0.41 percentage points, followed by the extractive industries sector at 0.33 percentage points, and the agriculture sector at 0.16 percentage points.
