Army foils smuggling attempt

The Eastern Military Zone on Tuesday thwarted an attempt to smuggle large quantities of narcotics from Syria into the Kingdom.

A Jordan Armed Forces – Arab Army (JAF) source said that border guards applied the rules of engagement, seizing the contraband.

The source emphasized that the JAF would firmly deal with any smuggling or infiltration attempts in order to protect the Kingdom’s borders.

One dead, 10 injured in Irbid road accident

One person died and ten others sustained injuries and fractures on Wednesday when two vehicles collided in the northern city of Irbid, according to the Public Security Department (PSD).

The PSD spokesperson said that rescue teams at Irbid civil defense department rushed to the scene, administered first aid to the injured and evacuated the deceased to the King Abdullah University Hospital.

1,615 new Covid-19 cases recorded in South Korea

For the eighth consecutive day, South Korea reported a new record of daily coronavirus infections, with 1,615 cases and new two deaths.

The Yonhap News Agency quoted the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency saying that the caseload in the country rose to 171,911, while the total number of fatalities climbed to 2,048.

Tunisia: 157 new coronavirus fatalities, 8,473 cases

The Tunisian Ministry of Health has announced that 157 new COVID-19 deaths and 8,473 new infections were registered over the last 24 hours.

The Ministry said in a statement late Tuesday that the new fatalities raised the death toll to 16,651 since the pandemic struck in March 2020, while the total number of cases climbed to 510,396.

More than 50 per cent of Canadians now fully vaccinated

More than 50 per cent of Canadians who are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine have now been fully vaccinated against coronavirus.

In a statement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that with 68 million doses expected to land by the end of July, Canada is on track to have everyone who is eligible fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the end of the summer.

“Canada’s vaccination strategy is “bearing out,” with increasing take-up and steadily declining new infections,” he stressed, noting that new infections across the country continue to decline with an average of 451 cases reported daily during the last seven days.

“Our goal is to make sure that as many people as possible are protected, and we’re going to continue to work with the international community to make sure that people who are fully vaccinated in ways that Canadians recognize as safe and effective, are also recognized around the world,” Trudeau further said.

Urdun Jannah tourism program to continue during Eid holiday

The Ministry of Tourism’s “Urdun Jannah” domestic tourism program will continue to operate trips during the Eid al-Adha holiday, starting from the second day of Eid.

The program offers one-day trips to many tourist locations in the northern, central and southern regions of the Kingdom, as well as overnight trips to tourist attractions such as Petra and Wadi Rum, covering more than half of the cost of the trip for Jordanians.

A statement by the ministry on Wednesday called on citizens to take advantage of the program’s promotional offers through directly registering on its mobile application “Jannah.jo”.

“Public health and safety measures at the tourist sites are maintained through comprehensive sterilization for archaeological places, visitor centers, museums and ticket rooms, along with measuring workers and tour participants’ temperature, and ensuring adherence to physical distancing and mask-wearing” the ministry added.

Italian ambassador visits HTU

Italy’s Ambassador to Jordan Fabio Cassese on Wednesday visited Al Hussein Technical University (HTU), a Crown Prince Foundation (CPF) initiative.

The envoy met with president of the university, Ismail Hinti, over cooperation between the two sides in the academic and research fields.

During the meeting, Hinti reviewed the university’ vision, objectives and programs, highlighting its aspiration to partnership with Italian universities specialized in the fields of energy, electrical, civil and architectural engineering, along with cybersecurity and information science.

The envoy commended the quality of the university’s programs, appreciating its efforts in promoting technical education in Jordan.

Jordan’s exports to U.S. amounts to 25% of total exports in 2020

Jordan’s exports to the United States estimated at nearly 25 percent of the Kingdom’s total exports in 2020 with a value of JD1.220 billion, bringing the trade balance in favor of Jordan by JD217 million, President of the Jordan and Amman Chambers of Industry, Fathi Jaghbir, said on Wednesday.

Speaking to Petra, Jaghbir confirmed that the U.S. is one of Jordan’s most prominent trading partners, noting that the Kingdom’s imports from America stood at JD1.003 billion to reach about 8 per cent of the total non-oil imports last year.

“Textile materials, medicines, metal products, air-conditioning machines, jewelry, food products, transportation equipment and live animal products are the Kingdom’s top exports to the U.S. markets,” he indicated.

Jaghbir stressed the strong and deep economic ties between Jordan and the U.S., thanks to the great efforts made by His Majesty King Abdullah II in integrating the national economy with global economies, in addition to providing all support to the industrial sector and enhancing the competitiveness of its exports.

“Jordan was the first Arab country to sign a free trade agreement with the U.S. in 2000, and it came into full effect in 2010,” he said, adding that the FTA further consolidated special ties between the two countries, expanded two-way trade by tangible figures, maximized export opportunities, and attracted non-US investments.

Israeli forces arrest 19 Palestinians in West Bank raids

Israeli occupation forces, early Wednesday, arrested 19 Palestinians during raids across the West Bank and the occupied city of Jerusalem.

In a statement, the Palestinian Prisoners Society said that Israeli troops stormed the cities of Hebron, Bethlehem, Nablus, Tubas, and Tulkarm as well as other neighborhoods in occupied East Jerusalem, and rounded up the Palestinians under the pretext they were “wanted.”
