Afghan economic meltdown would be ‘gift for terrorists,’ says U.N. chief

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed on Friday for an injection of cash into Afghanistan to avoid an economic meltdown that would spark a “catastrophic” situation for the Afghan people and be a “gift for terrorist groups.”

His remarks come after his special envoy on Afghanistan, Deborah Lyons, warned the Security Council on Thursday that the freezing of billions of dollars in international Afghan assets to keep them out of Taliban hands would inevitably spark “a severe economic downturn.”

Foreign Ministry welcomes Lebanon’s new government

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, on Friday, welcomed the forming of a new government in Lebanon.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Haitham Abu Alfoul voiced Jordan’s support to such move to enable the Lebanese to face challenges and achieve security, stability and prosperity.

He stressed the Kingdom continue support for the Lebanese in a way that mirrors the deeply-rooted ties between the two countries, wishing the new government success for the interest of the Lebanese people.

White House says 19 Americans left Afghanistan on Qatar Airways Friday

Nineteen Americans were on a Qatar Airways flight out of Kabul on Friday, the White House said.

It added that an additional two U.S. citizens and 11 permanent residents left Afghanistan overland to a third country with U.S. government help.

U.S. FDA may authorize COVID-19 vaccine for kids based on two months of safety data

U.S. heath regulators said children in clinical trials testing COVID-19 vaccines should be monitored for at least two months for side effects, suggesting that the agency is considering a quicker path to authorize the shot for emergency use than full approval.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Friday it was looking to complete the data review as quickly as possible, likely in a matter of weeks rather than months.

The FDA granted full approval last month for the use of Pfizer Inc’s (PFE.N) vaccine in people over the age of 16 based on a six-month follow-up from the trial. The shot was authorized in December for emergency use based on a shorter, two-month follow up.

Morocco’s monarch names Aziz Akhannouch to lead new government

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI on Friday appointed Aziz Akhannouch of the liberal RNI party as prime minister and asked him to form a government.

RNI emerged as the biggest party in Wednesday’s parliamentary election, taking 102 of the 395 seats while the former largest party, the moderate Islamist PJD, collapsed to take only 13 seats.

31 terror attack plots in UK foiled over past four years, MI5 chief says

Thirty-one late-stage attack plots were disrupted over the past four years by intelligence officers, the director-general of MI5 has said.

Ken McCallum said that the threat of terrorism in the UK remains “a real and enduring thing” and warned that recent events in Afghanistan could lead to a new 9/11-style attack plot.

He added: “We do face a consistent global struggle to defeat extremism and to guard against terrorism – this is real problem.”

UK records 147 new COVID-19 deaths

Britain recorded 147 new deaths within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test, down from 167 on Thursday, government statistics showed on Friday.

There were 37,622 new cases of the virus, compared with 38,013 on Thursday, the figures showed.
