CGTN: Xi Jinping: A role model in respecting teachers

BEIJING, Sept. 12, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — China has a long tradition of honoring teachers. Starting from 1985, the country has designated September 10 each year as Teachers’ Day to pay tribute to educators and mentors nationwide. It’s something that Chinese President Xi Jinping has been doing for years. Through speeches and actions, Xi has been calling on people to respect teachers and give priority to education.

In a letter to representatives of model teaching units named after late geophysicist at Jilin University Huang Danian on Thursday, Xi praised the representatives for their achievements in teaching and scientific research and innovation.

Noting the great contributions made by Huang in deep earth exploration technology, Xi encouraged college teachers across China to provide good guidance to students and make new contributions to the cause of fully building a modern socialist country. The letter shows Xi’s high regard for teachers – an attitude he’s long held.

“It would be good fortune for one to have a good teacher; it would be an honor for a school to host great teachers. Constantly giving rise to such outstanding teachers would bestow hopes on a nation,” Xi said during a visit to Beijing Normal University in 2014.

At the time, Xi recalled his years at school, saying he is grateful for what he learned from his teachers.

“I have received instruction from many teachers. They taught me knowledge as well as how to be an upright person, which has benefited me enormously,” the Chinese president said, hoping the teachers could use their knowledge and experiences to guide students to grow up healthily.

In September 2016, Xi went back to his alma mater Beijing Bayi School to meet his teachers Chen Zhonghan and Chen Qiuying, among others.

“You were strict with us during those years. But in retrospect, I benefited from your teachings for life,” Xi said to his former teachers.

In fact, honoring teachers is not merely a personal behavior but is also related to the country’s cause of national rejuvenation.

In a speech at the 2018 national education meeting, Xi highlighted education as a “fundamental” factor in China’s cause of national rejuvenation. He viewed students as the major force for national rejuvenation in the future, while teachers the dream builders.

To encourage teachers to make greater contributions to the cause of the Party and the people, Xi called for enhancing the political, social and professional status of teachers and giving priority to education.

“Teachers are the engineers of the human soul and disseminators of human civilization. They are tasked with the mission of the times — to spread knowledge, ideas and truth,” as Xi noted.

WHO logistics hub airlifts largest single shipment of humanitarian cargo to Ethiopia

The World Health Organization (WHO) Logistics Hub in Dubai delivered 85 metric tons of life-saving medical supplies to Ethiopia, the largest single shipment of humanitarian cargo to date airlifted by the Hub.

The supplies, including essential medicines, trauma and emergency surgery kits, infusions, consumables, equipment, and cholera kits, were flown by a charter flight donated by the United Arab Emirates that landed in Addis Ababa on 10 September and will address the urgent needs of more than 150 000 people.

“This is an important demonstration of solidarity with people in need. This delivery will help bolster our efforts to provide relief to hundreds of thousands of families who are grappling with a difficult humanitarian situation,” said Boureima Hama Sambo, WHO Representative in Ethiopia.

While these supplies are critical to saving lives, WHO and partners are working closely to address the health needs of nearly 2.5 million people in the current crisis.

Dispatching over four times the weekly average, the operation shipped over 450 metric tons of medical supplies valued at more than US$ 4.3 million in support of cholera outbreak response in Nigeria, critical shortages of medicines in Afghanistan, and trauma and surgical supplies to Syria and Yemen.

The WHO’s Logistics Hub plays an instrumental role by rapidly responding to health emergencies around the world.

Since the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hub has successfully delivered US$ 90 million worth of health supplies through 705 shipments to over 120 countries.

Temperatures are expected to hover around annual average, with moderate weather conditions prevailing in most parts of the Kingdom, except in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and Aqaba where it will be hot, with low clouds, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said in its forecast for Monday and Tuesday.

Jordan resumes receiving transit tourists under certain conditions

Jordan will continue to receive transit tourist groups, with the provision that tourism offices provide the manifest of the visitor’s names, supported by a reservation for accommodation, 48 hours ahead of their arrival, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced Monday.

In a statement, the ministry also decided not to allow first-time visa holders with employment contract in a Gulf country to enter the Kingdom before studying and evaluating the case.

“Tourism offices will be allowed to receive transit tourist groups within the accommodation capacity of hotels and the available means of transportation, and will be obliged to follow up the groups from the moment they arrive until their departure, bearing full responsibility in the event that one of the group members doesn’t leave the country,” the ministry added.

Harvest Moon to light up Jordan’s sky next week

A harvest moon is expected to light up Jordan’s night sky next week, September 20, being full and bright as it occurs closest to the start of autumn, astronomer Emad Mjahed told Petra on Monday.

According to Mjahed, the full moon is scheduled to peak from the northeastern side of Amman’s sky at sunset, and will be visible until sunset of the next day.

“On average, the moon rises about 50 minutes later each day. But when a full moon happens close to an autumn equinox, the moon rises closer to the time of sunset. For mid-temperate latitudes, it rises only about 25 to 30 minutes later daily for several days before and after the full Harvest moon” he added.

The full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Harvest Moon, because it took place during the time of year when corn was harvested, as farmers could continue their harvest late into the night by the light of the moon.

Artists partake in cultural exchange between Jordan, Netherlands

This year the Open Art Museum is collaborating with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Jordan to bring “Open Art Shuffle” to life.

Open Art Shuffle is a street art & cultural exchange initiative between Dutch and Jordanian artists where the artists get to swap countries, ideas and cultures, while leaving behind beautiful works of art in the form of large-scale murals.

The murals’ themes center around food security, water and intercultural exchange. They aim to shed light on the social, economic and environmental significance of these topics to both the Netherlands and Jordan. The murals also signify the special relationship between Jordan and the Netherlands in terms of agricultural cooperation, and the importance of sharing of knowledge and best practices.

Jordanian artists Yazan Mesmar and Miramar Al Nayyar completed two large murals in the city of Leeuwarden, in the Netherlands. Both murals, which measure 15m x 9m, are painted on the outer columns of the Markt 058 building.

“Many special traditions that help us nurture deep friendships with our neighbors have been developed by Jordanian communities. For example, when someone shares food with us we later return the plate filled with fruit, sweets or a recipe to show our appreciation. I activated the spirit of the ‘returning the plate’ tradition to conceptualize a mural that would honor and extend the important relationship between Jordan and the Netherlands”, said artist Miramar when asked about the concept behind her mural.

She added:”My mural depicts another important feature of Jordan’s natural landscape: the flowering palm tree. While palm trees grow all over Jordan, they are not present in the Netherlands due the cold winters. Therefore, I decided to use my art to donate the Netherlands a palm tree that will flourish all year long.”

When asked about his mural, artist Yazan Mesmar said the following: “Jordan has the highest rate of female participation in agriculture in the MENA region. My mural depicts a portrait of a proud woman, in a dress inspired by the traditional northern dresses that were worn to celebrate the beginning and end of the harvest season. The woman is surrounded by tulips, the national flower of the Netherlands to signify the transfer of knowledge and experience between the two nations and people.”

Dutch artist duo Studio Giftig and artist Tymon de Laat travel to Jordan from the Netherlands at the end of September to create their murals in the capital city of Amman.

This Open Art Shuffle initiative is financed by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Jordan. The exchange would not have been possible without the support from Writers Block, Street Art Antwerp, the Greater Amman Municipality and the Jordan Tourism Board.

In 2018, the Dutch government designated Jordan as a priority country for reception of refugees in the region and committed 200 million Euro for development cooperation.

The Netherlands has prioritized the horticulture sector for interventions because of its potential to contribute to economic growth, food security and employment generation for Jordanians and Syrian refugees. The aim is to increase production while at the same time use less water and less energy.

The Netherlands takes a value chain approach, focusing on all stages from sowing to production to quality assurance to export marketing, while guaranteeing decent work conditions. In addition, a number of projects in the water sector are financed, focusing on water conservation, wastewater treatment and healthy ecosystems.
