CCTV+: CMG’s Mid-Autumn Festival Gala presents magnificent visual feast

BEIJING, Sept. 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The China Media Group (CMG)’s highly-anticipated Mid-Autumn Festival Gala was aired Tuesday night, presenting a magnificent visual feast to global audiences with nearly 30 exquisite artistic performances.

The gala consisting of three chapters, offered a blend of traditional elements and advanced technologies, showcasing a panoramic picture of Chinese culture and history. It was simultaneously broadcast overseas for the first time.

The first part of the gala, themed “Moon rises to Mid-Autumn,” attracted audience with various elements of traditional Chinese culture. It includes songs of a traditional Chinese poem about the Mid-Autumn Festival and modern songs integrated with traditional Chinese styles to show affection for the country and family, and songs praising dream seekers.

Themed “the full moon and the realization of dreams”, the third part of the TV gala included singing and dancing performances and the presence of Olympic champions and gifts from the space.

The three-part gala was recorded earlier this month in Xichang, capital of the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China’s Sichuan Province and home to the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, and presented on a 360-degree stage, the largest of its kind in the show’s history.

The main stage was inspired by the Big Dipper, a constellation of the seven brightest stars of the larger constellation Ursa Major, and China’s own global navigation satellite system, BeiDou, named after the Big Dipper asterism, symbolizing best wishes for happiness, reunion, companionship, and coexistence.

Featuring space elements, it spotlighted people who have devoted themselves to the development of China’s aerospace industry.

Since the gala was first broadcast live by China Central Television (CCTV) in 1991, it has become overwhelmingly popular among the Chinese diaspora and is now one of the most popular festive TV shows with hundreds of millions annual viewers worldwide.

The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar, which is Sept. 21 this year.

CGTN: China leads green development, vows no new coal-fired power projects abroad

BEIJING, Sept. 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — After pledging to strive to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, China has taken another remarkable and practical step in pursuing green development.

China will step up support for other developing countries in promoting green and low-carbon energy and will not build new coal-fired power projects abroad, announced President Xi Jinping at the general debate of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) via video on Tuesday.

This is not surprising but of great significance, as China has previously cooperated with several countries along the routes of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) towards “greening” the initiative.

Global development initiative

Phasing out coal investments would be promising to reduce carbon emissions, which pose a threat to the United Nations’ (UN) Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, especially Goal 13 on climate action.

Besides decreasing coal-fired power projects, China has pledged an additional $3 billion of international assistance in the next three years to support developing countries in responding to COVID-19 and promoting economic and social recovery.

“Development holds the key to people’s well-being,” Xi said, adding that countries need to work together to steer global development towards a new stage of balanced, coordinated and inclusive growth.

Beijing has highlighted its willingness to work with the international community, including the United States, to jointly advance global environmental governance.

For instance, through joint partnership, China has established the Belt and Road Initiative International Green Development Coalition, which serves as a platform for BRI cooperation on green development. Under the platform, China has provided more than 2,000 training opportunities for environmental protection officials, experts and technicians from over 120 participating countries.

Adhering to green development is engraved in the Chinese government through the Constitution and the master blueprint of national development as an ecological civilization to be observed in all socioeconomic developments and political agendas.

Beating COVID-19 remains a major task 

Undoubtedly, though many countries are busy trying to rebuild their economies amid the pandemic, COVID-19 is still raging in the world, with the number of new cases rising every day globally.

Under such circumstances, President Xi called for putting people and their lives first, taking a science-based approach to origins tracing, enhancing the coordinated global COVID-19 response and minimizing the risk of cross-border virus transmission.

Noting that vaccination is a powerful weapon against COVID-19, he stressed the pressing priority is to ensure the fair and equitable distribution of vaccines globally.

China has promised to provide a total of two billion doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to the world by the end of this year and has donated 100 million doses of the vaccine to other developing countries in the course of this year in addition to $100 million to COVAX.

Practicing true multilateralism is critical

Whether it is improving global environmental governance or beating COVID-19, multilateralism is paramount, which is another key point of Xi’s statement at the UNGA.

“The UN should hold high the banner of true multilateralism and serve as the central platform for countries to jointly safeguard universal security, share development achievements and chart the course for the future of the world,” Xi said.

The Chinese president called on the UN to increase the representation and say of developing countries in international affairs and take the lead in advancing democracy and the rule of law in international relations.

China, a staunch supporter of multilateralism

President Xi also called for building a new type of international relations based on mutual respect, equity, justice and win-win cooperation, stressing that the practice of forming small circles or zero-sum games should be rejected.

“One country’s success does not have to mean another country’s failure, and the world is big enough to accommodate common development and progress of all countries,” he said, adding that differences and problems among countries need to be handled through dialogue and cooperation on the basis of equality and mutual respect.

As the largest developing country, a permanent member of the UN Security Council and the second-largest contributor to the UN’s regular budget and peacekeeping assessments, China has always actively supported the work of the United Nations, firmly safeguarded the international system and upheld multilateralism with concrete actions.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, China has hosted a series of major international events, including the G20 Hangzhou Summit, the 22nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, the China International Import Expo, and the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations.

The report is titled, “Lessons Learned: Insights from the COVID-19 Crisis for Middle Market Private Equity Sponsors,” and features research results from more than 100 interviews with managing directors and partners at middle market private equity sponsors in the U.S.

“The pandemic pressure tested middle market private equity sponsors on every level, yet sponsors more than rose to the occasion as seen by the strong rebound in deal volume in the second half of 2020 and into this year. From sharpening their investment processes to rapidly adopting new technologies, sponsors quickly adapted to the new environment to best support their current portfolio companies while also continuing deployment of capital across new deals,” said Christopher Taylor, Head of New York Life Investments Alternatives and CEO of Madison Capital Funding.

The research revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the middle market private equity industry and has triggered lasting changes across sponsors’ core areas such as investing, deal sourcing, transaction financing, exit strategies and fundraising.

Key takeaways from the research data include:

  • New Deals Drove Deployment: For 60% of the middle market private equity sponsors participating in the study, new deals represented the most common driver of capital deployment in 2020, with add-on investments a distant second.
  • Sponsors Sharpen Investment Processes: The global pandemic forced sponsors to sharpen their skills and tighten procedures, with almost 30% of sponsors surveyed reporting that the crisis and subsequent rebound prompted them to tighten their discipline on valuations.
  • Relationships Prove Their Worth, Especially in Deal Funding: Sponsors surveyed ranked relationship history and covenant flexibility as the attributes they see as most important in financing partners in uncertain market environments.
  • Pandemic Had Mixed Effect on Exits: More than a third of sponsors surveyed report the pandemic delayed exits and extended holding periods. Sponsors report delays ranging from a few months to two years to provide portfolio companies more time to meet growth expectations.
  • Optimism Remains Among LPs: More than half of study participants believe the LP community remains optimistic about the investment climate; however, about 30% of study participants say LPs are turning negative on the environment—often due to valuation concerns.
  • ESG Adoption Continues: Three-quarters of specialist sponsors and half of generalists surveyed say they take ESG factors into account when making investments. However, most have yet to establish formal processes for assessing ESG or incorporating DEI factors and fewer than 5% of sponsors surveyed are UN PRI signatories.

“Looking ahead, sponsors remain poised to take advantage of favorable conditions in the middle market following their swift and decisive actions in 2020. Middle market deal flow continues to gain momentum as markets rapidly rebound and sponsors look to put record levels of dry powder to work ahead of potential tax changes,” added Taylor. “The COVID-19 crisis combined with last year’s economic and social upheavals not only had a lasting effect on business operations, investment decision making and portfolio management, but also shifted sponsors’ focus from the ‘E’ to the ‘S’ in ESG, underscoring the incredible importance of diversity, equity and inclusion across investment processes and portfolios.”

(Gore) announced the EMEA launch of the lower profile, large diameter GORE® VIABAHN® Endoprosthesis with PROPATEN Bioactive Surface. The device enhancements build on a market-leading stent graft device, which has become an important tool for treating complex vascular disease. The innovative VIABAHN® Device design reduces the delivery profile for larger 9–13 mm diameter stent grafts by up to 3 Fr, enabling delivery through smaller sheaths. Smaller introducer sheaths have resulted in a lower risk of vascular access complications in select patient populations.1 Additionally, new radiopaque markers, now also on the larger diameter device configurations, enhance visualization under fluoroscopy, facilitating positioning and device delivery, as well as precise and predictable placement. “In addition to the radiopaque markers that facilitate positioning and deployment, the new lower profile enables use of a smaller sheath, potentially reducing the risk of damage at the access site,” said Manuel Alonso, M.D., Vascular Surgeon, Oviedo, Spain. “Combined with the trackability and flexibility this new lower profile offering will become very instrumental for treating complex patients across disease states in my practice.”

CGTN: A look back at 2021: Fulfillment of Chinese dreams

BEIJING, Sept. 21, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated on September 21 this year, is an occasion for family reunions. It is a day on which many people believe dreams come true when the moon is at its fullest.

On this day, let’s take a look back at 2021, which has so far witnessed many of the Chinese dreams come true, including the fulfillment of the first centenary goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and the successful completion of the Shenzhou-12 manned spaceflight mission.

Building a moderately prosperous society

“Through the continued efforts of the whole Party and the entire nation, we have realized the first centenary goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects,” Chinese President Xi Jinping declared at a ceremony marking the centenary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on July 1.

With the announcement, China brought about a historic resolution to the problem of absolute poverty. The country is now marching toward the second centenary goal of building China into a great modern socialist country in all respects.

Within eight years, China successfully lifted the final 98.99 million impoverished people out of poverty, together with 832 impoverished counties and 128,000 villages.

China spent a total of nearly 1.6 trillion yuan (about $246 billion) on eradicating poverty through a strategy of targeted poverty alleviation, striving to eradicate poverty through development.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 2012, Xi has presided over seven central poverty alleviation work symposiums, conducted over 50 research tours on poverty reduction and visited all of China’s 14 contiguous impoverished areas.

Millions of cadres were sent to the front line of poverty alleviation. Among them, over 1,800 workers lost lives for the country’s great cause.

In Xi’s words, the eradication of absolute poverty has represented a miraculous achievement in China. The victory has been secured through the combined efforts of the whole Party and the nation.

Advancements in space exploration

China’s space dream is another highlight of the year 2021. The country declared a complete success of the Shenzhou-12 manned spaceflight mission after three Chinese astronauts landed safely on Earth on September 17, ending their three-month space travel.

On April 29, China launched the Tianhe core module of the China Space Station. Just as Xi said during his conversation with the astronauts on June 23, “the construction of the space station is a milestone in China’s space industry, which will make pioneering contributions to the peaceful use of space by humanity.”
