King congratulates Canada PM on parliamentary election win

His Majesty King Abdullah has sent a cable to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, expressing congratulations on his parliamentary election win.

In the cable, King Abdullah stressed Jordan’s deep-rooted ties with Canada and expressed keenness to enhance cooperation, wishing Prime Minister Trudeau success, and the people of Canada further prosperity and progress.

Saudi envoy lauds 2021 Amman Book Fair

Saudi Ambassador to Jordan, Nayef bin Bandar Al-Sudairy, stressed the importance of the Saudi participation in 2021 Amman International Book Fair, which kicked off Thursday.

Touring its venues, the envoy told “Petra” that “the 20th edition of the fair reflects Jordanian government’s sound arrangements under leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Al Hussein.”

The diplomat, moreover, expressed keenness to follow up many Jordanian cultural production, adding that the Saudi citizen will see publications at Jordanian participation in the Riyadh Book Fair, which will be launched early next month.

The annual event, which will run until October 2, is held at the Amman International Exhibitions for Cars on the airport road.

Masarweh, UAE envoy talk environmental cooperation to address related challenges

Environment Minister, Nabil Masarweh, on Thursday, discussed with Emirati Ambassador to Jordan, Ahmed Ali Al Balushi, the key environmental issues of mutual concern.

Discussions also went over ways to address challenges within a regional and international framework and cooperation, particularly with regard to climate change, which has become a “major” threat to the world, and support international steps in this regard, according to a ministry statement.

During the meeting, the two officials pledged support to the two countries’ positions at world forums and to resolutions pertaining to the environmental field, the statement added.

Dudin meets talk-show hosts, announces campaign to vaccinate more university students

Minister of State for Media Affairs, the official spokesperson for the government, Sakher Dudin, on Thursday met with a number of talk-show hosts and local radio programs producers at the Prime Ministry.

The discussions tackled a slew of local issues, primarily His Majesty King Abdullah II’s recent visit to Washington, and contents of His Majesty’s speech at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which focused on Palestinian cause and the importance of preserving the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites.

The meeting also went over the government’s economic action priorities program 2021-2023, and the ministerial delegation’s visit to the United States to present this projected scheme, in addition to highlighting the government’s vision to improve the services level in the health sector.

Dudin, speaking at the meeting, said the government is proceeding with procedures to resume in-class education in universities next month, adding that a campaign will be launched by the National Center for Security and Crisis Management (NCSCM), in cooperation with the Ministry of Health to increase the number of centers designated to administer Covid-19 vaccines at universities.

With regard to Jordan’s epidemiological situation, Dudin said the plan to open the sectors (a safe summer) has paid off in terms of vaccinating more than 3 million people with the second dose, pointing out that the government hopes that the number of double jabbed recipients will increase during the coming period to 4.5 million.

Gov’t human rights coordinator, Norwegian envoy discuss Jordan’s human rights system

The Government’s Coordinator for Human Rights (GCHR) at the Prime Ministry, Nazir Awamleh, on Thursday discussed with the Norwegian Ambassador to Amman, Espen Lindback, the government’s procedures to enhance and develop Jordan’s human rights system.

Speaking at the talks, Awamleh said these measures came in implementation of the Royal directives to the government, highlighting future plans and programs that contribute to spreading the culture and concepts of human rights at the official level.

The government, he said, has prepared a “comprehensive” national plan for human rights, and is currently working on reviewing, updating and developing this projected scheme, in addition to reviewing successes and shortcomings, and evaluating the impact of recent developments in this regard.

Lindback, for his part, praised his country’s “strong” relations with Jordan and the measures taken to develop Jordan’s human rights situation, expressing hope for further progress in this field and more joint cooperation.

Stressing the importance of the education sector, the diplomat expressed his country’s willingness to provide the necessary support in this regard, lauding students’ return to Jordan’s schools and resumption of in-class learning.

Discussions also went over the mechanism to receive and address complaints amid Covid-19 pandemic, Jordanian women’s political participation, and freedom of expression in the Kingdom, according to a GCHR office statement.

Talks, moreover, tackled jurisdictions in the human rights area, and extent of their alignment with the National Center for Human Rights and civil society institutions, as well as exchanging expertise and providing support, the statement added.

Industry minister, Egyptian counterpart discuss mechanisms to enhance economic cooperation

Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, Maha Ali, and her Egyptian counterpart, Nevin Jameh, stressed the importance of continued action to achieve outcomes of the tripartite summits, which brought together His Majesty King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, aimed to strengthening the joint economic relations.

Speaking at their meeting in Amman, the two ministers also stressed the need to remove any obstacles facing joint trade, as Ali asked her Egyptian counterpart to overcome difficulties that face some Jordanian companies’ exports to the Egyptian market, in implementation of outcomes of Higher Jordanian-Egyptian Committee’s meetings in its last session.

The two ministers called on the two countries’ private sector to “best” benefit from the opportunities available due to the joint economic cooperation.

Later, the duo inaugurated activities of the 14th session of the Egyptian Products Exhibition, which is held in Amman’s Mecca Mall and will run until October 2, that embodies common desire to deepen bilateral relations in all cooperation areas, to serve mutual interests, according to a ministry statement.

Switch to summertime moved to end of February

The Cabinet decided on Thursday to move the Kingdom’s annual switch to summertime from the end of March to the end of February. The cabinet kept the switch to wintertime at the end of October.

Clocks are to be set back by 60 minutes as of 1am of the last Friday of October every year, bringing the Kingdom two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, while they will be set forward one hour on the last Thursday of February as of next year.

Foreign Ministry condemns continued Israeli violations at Al-Aqsa Mosque

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates on Thursday condemned the continued Israeli violations in Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque/ Al-Haram Al-Sharif, the latest was the “massive” incursions by Jewish extremists into the mosque’s courtyards under protection of Israeli police, demanding an “immediate” halt to Tel Aviv’s practices.

In a press statement, the ministry’s spokesperson, Haitham Abu Al-Foul, said the extremists’ incursions and behavior are a violation of the holy city’s “historical and legal” status quo, international law, and represent an “unacceptable” practice that contradicts Israel’s obligations as an occupying power in East Jerusalem under international law.

The diplomat also said Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif, with its entire area of 144 dunums, is a place of worship for Muslims exclusively, adding that Jordan-run Jerusalem and Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department is the legal entity with the exclusive jurisdiction to manage Al-Haram Al-Sharif’s affairs and regulate entry to its courtyards.
