Prince Charles began at the RSS science exhibition where he was briefed on the work of the RSS to expand scientific understanding through research and the transformation of acquired knowledge into practical and applied solutions to address local and regional challenges.

Nisreen Alhmoud, Director of the Bio-Safety and Bio-Security Centre at the RSS, discussed the monitoring of zoonotic infectious diseases in Jordan and the region, while Kyle E. Cordova, Executive Director of RSS Research Enterprise, described the Advanced Research Centre’s (ARC) development of an atmospheric water harvesting device, created from novel molecular materials, that can provide a sustainable source of clean drinking water for arid areas.

Othman Mashaqbeh, Director of Advanced Materials and Applications at the ARC, discussed his research group’s efforts to develop nature-based solutions to remove pharmaceutical contaminants from wastewater treatment.

Matthew Foster, RSS Master Plan Coordinator, presented the RSS campus development plan, which embodies the inter-dependent solidarity between the campus’s research, academic and technology sectors, as well as social and leisure zones.

The master plan represents a vision for a comprehensive “innovation city” to act as a beacon for scientific innovation and science advice in Jordan and the region to drive knowledge-based change in a sustainable ecosystem.

Prince Charles and HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, President of the RSS, who had received the Prince were later joined by Jordanian business leaders and Minister of Environment Muawiyeh Radaidah for a roundtable discussion on sustainability challenges facing the business sector and the potential opportunities of sustainable growth.

The session was attended by the Jordanian Ambassador to the UK Manar Dabbas, the UK’s Ambassador to Jordan Bridget Brind, as well as representatives from the RSS.

The discussion was moderated by Professor Iain Stewart, El Hassan bin Talal Research Chair in Sustainability at the RSS.

Prince Charles spoke about the role of the Sustainable Markets Initiative in mobilising the resources and talents of the commercial, industrial and financial community to push towards realising sustainable development, pointing out to the need to find a global roadmap for the transition towards green economy.

Princess Sumaya emphasized the role of science in finding solutions to challenges, not least in dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She noted that “this was an example of the entire planet being affected by an issue that was part of the challenge to science. Now is the time for the science community to step up”.

The Princess added that infectious diseases, climate change, and so many other disasters know no borders, and that we must work together in a transboundary manner to invest in science to improve people’s lives.

Roundtable participants discussed opportunities and challenges for the business sector arising from Jordan’s drive for sustainable development and how to move forward the sustainability agenda in Jordan.

The meeting marked a new starting point for partnerships between the public and private sectors with a focus on the role of science and technology in supporting a green agenda and stimulating investment for innovation to promote sustainable development.

Jordan submits request to MENAFATF to reassess AML

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has submitted a request to the Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force (MENAFATF), asking a reassessment of the extent of its compliance with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing legislation in relation to relevant international conventions and standards at the “first possible” opportunity.

Jordan’s bid comes in accordance with international procedures after the Kingdom issued Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) Law No. (20) for the year 2021, which was published in the Official Gazette on 16/9/2021.

The newly-endorsed law constitutes the main pillar in the field of Jordan’s legislation compliance with international standards in combating AML/CTF.

Also, a law had been endorsed amending Jordan’s Companies Law within the framework of the government’s procedures aimed to identify the beneficial owner and ensure accuracy of the basic company-related data, which is also an important legislation to proceed with the measures to request a re-evaluation on Jordan’s extent of technical compliance (legislation).

Head of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Unit, Samia Abu Sharif, said 14 out of 40 overall recommendations and international standards, which the Kingdom has received a low rating, will be revisited, according to Jordan’s request to MENAFATF.

Corroborated legislation and documents have been submitted to support the request, Abu Sharif said, adding that the reassessment results will be announced in May 2022, after passing the review and evaluation procedures related to the extent of Jordan’s legislation compliance with international standards.

This request is a step that is used to measure the Kingdom’s exit from the list of countries subject to increased monitoring known as the “greylisting,” which included Jordan on October 2021, according to which the Kingdom committed to implement an action plan of over a two-year period.

The National Committee for Combating Money Laundering and Financing Terrorism has approved AML/CTF instructions for implementing UN Security Council resolutions related to fighting AML/CTF and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), which aim to address many shortcomings in this field.

In addition, a guideline for implementing the newly-issued instructions has been outlined and sent to Jordanian competent authorities and entities subject to the provisions of the AML/CTF law.

Moreover, several regulatory measures and decisions have been issued by Jordan’s oversight and supervisory authorities, which were presented as corroborating documents to the technical compliance re rating request.
