HRH Prince Charles Wednesday visited the Royal Scientific Society (RSS), as part of the Prince of Wales’s official visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
Prince Charles began at the RSS science exhibition where he was briefed on the work of the RSS to expand scientific understanding through research and the transformation of acquired knowledge into practical and applied solutions to address local and regional challenges.
Nisreen Alhmoud, Director of the Bio-Safety and Bio-Security Centre at the RSS, discussed the monitoring of zoonotic infectious diseases in Jordan and the region, while Kyle E. Cordova, Executive Director of RSS Research Enterprise, described the Advanced Research Centre’s (ARC) development of an atmospheric water harvesting device, created from novel molecular materials, that can provide a sustainable source of clean drinking water for arid areas.
Othman Mashaqbeh, Director of Advanced Materials and Applications at the ARC, discussed his research group’s efforts to develop nature-based solutions to remove pharmaceutical contaminants from wastewater treatment.
Matthew Foster, RSS Master Plan Coordinator, presented the RSS campus development plan, which embodies the inter-dependent solidarity between the campus’s research, academic and technology sectors, as well as social and leisure zones.
The master plan represents a vision for a comprehensive “innovation city” to act as a beacon for scientific innovation and science advice in Jordan and the region to drive knowledge-based change in a sustainable ecosystem.
Prince Charles and HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, President of the RSS, who had received the Prince were later joined by Jordanian business leaders and Minister of Environment Muawiyeh Radaidah for a roundtable discussion on sustainability challenges facing the business sector and the potential opportunities of sustainable growth.
The session was attended by the Jordanian Ambassador to the UK Manar Dabbas, the UK’s Ambassador to Jordan Bridget Brind, as well as representatives from the RSS.
The discussion was moderated by Professor Iain Stewart, El Hassan bin Talal Research Chair in Sustainability at the RSS.
Prince Charles spoke about the role of the Sustainable Markets Initiative in mobilising the resources and talents of the commercial, industrial and financial community to push towards realising sustainable development, pointing out to the need to find a global roadmap for the transition towards green economy.
Princess Sumaya emphasized the role of science in finding solutions to challenges, not least in dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
She noted that “this was an example of the entire planet being affected by an issue that was part of the challenge to science. Now is the time for the science community to step up”.
The Princess added that infectious diseases, climate change, and so many other disasters know no borders, and that we must work together in a transboundary manner to invest in science to improve people’s lives.
Roundtable participants discussed opportunities and challenges for the business sector arising from Jordan’s drive for sustainable development and how to move forward the sustainability agenda in Jordan.
The meeting marked a new starting point for partnerships between the public and private sectors with a focus on the role of science and technology in supporting a green agenda and stimulating investment for innovation to promote sustainable development.
