Jordan recorded 29 coronavirus deaths and 2,674 infections Saturday, taking the death toll to 11,515 and the caseload since the start of the pandemic to 939,293, according to the Ministry of Health.

The positivity rate of PCR tests for the day reached 8.83 per cent, according to the ministry’s daily media brief.

It indicated that the number of currently active cases in the Kingdom stood at 49,622, with 156 admitted to hospitals today and 1,037 currently being hospitalized. 101 Covid-19 patients were discharged today.

The occupancy rate of isolation beds in the northern region was 30 per cent, intensive care beds 51 per cent and respirators 30 per cent, it showed.

In the central region, the occupancy rate of isolation beds was 25 per cent, intensive care 38 per cent and respirators 17 per cent, it said.

In the southern region, the occupancy rate of isolation beds was 12 per cent, intensive care beds 18 per cent and respirators 15 per cent, it said.

The daily report indicated that 2,452 cases of recovery were recorded, bringing the total number of recoveries after the end of the 14-day isolation period to 878,156.

The number of those who got vaccinated for the first time climbed to 4,114,712 and recipients of the double jab reached 372,035, according to ministry figures.

Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs Mousa Maaytah said Saturday that among key recommendations of the Royal Committee to Modernize the Political System are youth empowerment, citizens’ education, respecting diversity and promoting dialogue culture.

He said at the opening of a forum on civic education and promoting societal peace and the culture of dialogue, which was held by the Jordanian Centre for Civic Education in cooperation with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), Maaytah stressed that partisan life cannot be developed without creating a civic culture of effective dialogue across the social spectrum and promote the integration of youth and women into political and partisan work.

The minister highlighted the importance of enhancing dialogue, diversity and societal peace, as well as rejecting hate speech along with developing legislation regulating political life to create an effective democracy based on political pluralism through the addition of civic education and democratic culture courses in primary school and university curricula.

The draft constitutional amendments and the elections and political parties bills currently being debated would create a platform-based parliament towards parliamentary governments in line with the royal directives, he pointed out.

For his part, resident representative of KAS in Jordan, Annette Ranko, said that civic education was the basis for creating a democratic culture among citizens, as it lays the dialogue framework, noting that his foundation works to convey a culture of civic education and promote dialogue and democracy through various ways and means, most important of which is online communication.

Director of the Jordanian Center for Civic Education Mona Al-Alami said the forum aims to introduce the human rights-based approach and the role of civic education in curbing violence and extremism and deepening the concept of active citizenship in local and Arab societies, stressing the promotion of the culture of dialogue and peace as a collective duty.

The two-day forum will discuss a number of topics, including civic education and its impact on spreading the dialogue culture and societal peace, the role of education and civic education in modernizing society and building a democratic state, the role of religions in fostering dialogue and civil peace, civic education, political developments in the region and their impact on the work of political parties and youth participation in political life, civic education and the role of Arab women in activating dialogue and women’s effective participation.

The forum will host a number of experts and consultants from Jordan and Arab countries.
