Linguists, pundits urge further universalization of Arabic

On December 18th every year, the world marks World Arabic Language Day, one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, used by more than 400 million people around the globe.

On the anniversary, experts and linguists called for documenting the connection between the Arabic language and the various branches of knowledge, as it is a pillar of human cultural diversity. The call resounds with this year’s theme of the World Arabic Language Day: “Arabic Language, a Bridge Between Civilizations.”

“Language is not just a tool for communication, but rather it is the main driver of science, thought, culture and technology,” said Ibrahim Badran, member of the Jordan Academy of Arabic.

Badran said in an interview with Petra that “the economic value of a language is huge, exceeding hundreds of millions of dinars annually. For instance, science and technology cannot be transferred, in the applied sense, to the various segments of society, i.e. from the scientist to the technician, from the doctor to the patient, from the teacher to the student, and from the book to the reader, without mastering the language.”

He stressed that young people should realize the role and importance of language in life, explaining that social networks have unfortunately become platforms where colloquialism is used extensively instead of standard Arabic.

Former MP Nabil Ghishan noted that since 1973 the United Nations has designated a day to celebrate the Arabic language, which is “a living organism that evolves and is the vehicle of culture and knowledge, and without it, nations cannot advance.”

Ghishan said that Arab countries should expand Arabic content on the Internet, which he described as “still poor and confined mostly to religious issues,” noting that enriching Arabic electronic content will contribute to developing the language and enhancing knowledge.

Mohammad Khair Bishtawi, a former linguist and journalist in Petra, urged the Arab world to produce various branches of knowledge using the Arabic language, stressing the importance of employing modern technology to present the Arabic language to the whole world. Bishtawi said that Arabic is more responsive to the requirements of the times and new technologies, compared to other languages.

Bishtawi said that it is necessary for official institutions to use standard Arabic language in all their regulations, instructions, documents, contracts, transactions, correspondence, labels, programs, publications and advertisements.

He proposed moving towards what he called “Arabic language engineering”, the specialization, according to Bishtawi, which looks at the means that would make the Arabic language respond to new technological developments, thus ensuring that the Arab community does not remain “consumer of what other foreign languages dish out for us.”

The Arab media, he added, should also use a flexible and vibrant language that, on the one hand, ensures a sound transmission of meanings and ideas, and on the other hand, absorbs new words and expressions.

Industrial Producers’ Prices index up 11pct in 2021

The Industrial Producers’ Prices index picked up by 11.16 percent in the January-October period of 2021, reaching 122.78 points compared to 110.46 during the same period in 2020, according to latest figures.

The producer’s prices index for October 2020 went up by 16.44 percent, reaching 127.89 points compared to 109.83 during the same month of 2020, a report issued Tuesday by the Department of Statistics (DoS) indicated.

Comparing October to September of 2021, the figures showed that the index for October rose by 1.42 reaching 127.89 points compared to 126.11 in September.

Area of licensed buildings up 56.7% in 10 months

The total area of licensed buildings in the Kingdom increased by 56.7 percent in the first ten months of 2021 to reach 7.011 million square meters (MSM) against 4.475 million MSM in the same reporting period of 2020, according to figures released on Tuesday by the Department of Statistics (DoS).

The data showed that the number of building licenses in the January-October period also jumped by 46.3 percent to a total of 21,916 licenses compared with 14,983 licenses in the same period last year.

The area of residential buildings soared to 6.153 million MSM in the first 10-month period of this year, marking a 59.6 percent rise from the 3.855 million square meters recorded in the corresponding period of last year, the DoS said.

Similarly, the area of buildings licensed for non-residential purposes shot up by 38.4 percent in the first ten months, reaching 858,000 square meters against 620,000 square meters in the same period of 2020, the data revealed.

Buildings licensed for housing purposes accounted for 87.8 percent of the total area of licensed buildings, leaving 12.2 percent to buildings used for non-housing purposes, according to the DoS.

In its geographic breakdown of the data, the department said that the central region of the Kingdom accounted for 66.6 percent of the total area of licensed buildings, followed by the northern and southern regions at 23.8 and 9.6 percent, respectively.

King extends best wishes to Christians on occasion of Christmas

His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday expressed best wishes to Christians in Jordan, Palestine, and the world on the occasions of Christmas and the New Year, at a meeting with church leaders from Jordan and Jerusalem, a number of Christian figures, and Islamic awqaf representatives.

Speaking at the meeting, which took place at Al Husseiniya Palace, King Abdullah commended the dedication of Jerusalem’s churches to the Pact of Omar and coexistence, based on the historical and legal status quo.

Expressing hope that the epidemiological situation would improve next year to allow Muslims and Christians to visit the holy sites in Jerusalem, His Majesty reaffirmed commitment to the religious and historical responsibility to safeguard and defend Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, under the Hashemite Custodianship.

The Custodianship is “an honour and a responsibility before me, the Hashemites, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan,” the King said at the meeting, attended by His Royal Highness Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad, His Majesty’s chief adviser for religious and cultural affairs and personal envoy.

Also at the meeting, His Majesty bestowed the Order of the State Centennial on the Patriarchate of the Holy City and all Jordan and Palestine, in appreciation of its historical and religious role in preserving holy places, consolidating Christian presence, and representing the Hashemite Custodianship.

Patriarch Theophilos III, patriarch of the Holy City and all Jordan and Palestine, received the order.

In addition, the King bestowed the Order of the State Centennial on the Council of Church Leaders in Jordan, in appreciation of its essential religious, spiritual, and social role in unifying the positions of churches and representing Jordan’s interests and those of their parishes. Council of Church Leaders President Archbishop Christoforos Atallah received the order.

For their part, the attendees expressed their appreciation of His Majesty’s positions in defence of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, under the Hashemite Custodianship.
