U.K. scraps pre-departure Covid test for vaccinated visitors

The U.K. will no longer require vaccinated travelers to take a pre-departure Covid test or self-isolate on arrival in England, the country’s Department for Transport announced Wednesday.

In a statement, the Department said that a lateral-flow test must still be taken within two days of entering England, and anyone who receives a positive result must self-isolate immediately and order a free PCR assessment.

“The changes take effect on Friday,” the statement added.

Two employees handed 3-year prison terms for forging 100 medical exemptions

Irbid Criminal Magistrate’s Court has jailed two employees working at a government hospital on charges related to job manipulation, illicit gain and use of official information to achieve a personal benefit, in violation of the provisions of the law.

During a public session on Thursday, the court issued its ruling on the two public employees, handed them a 3- year prison term and fined each JD1, 100.

According to the court’s proceedings, the suspects exploited the Prime Minister’s powers to grant health treatment exemptions at the gov’t’s expense in public hospitals.

To achieve their goals, the employees had access to the hospital’s automated system and issued forged medical exemptions, in return for cash. A total of 100 exemptions were discovered during the process of investigation, per the trial sheet.

Italy extends COVID vaccine mandate to everyone over 50

Italy on Wednesday made COVID-19 vaccination mandatory for people from the age of 50, one of very few European countries to take a similar steps, in an attempt to ease pressure on its health service and reduce fatalities.

The measure is immediately effective and will run until June 15.

Italy has registered more than 138,000 coronavirus deaths since its outbreak emerged in February 2020, the second highest toll in Europe after Britain.

Jordan sees 19 COVID-19 fatalities, 2,170 new cases Thursday-MoH

The Ministry of Health announced 19 Covid-19 fatalities and 2, 170 new cases were recorded in the Kingdom on Thursday, bringing the death toll to 12,810 and the caseload to 1, 074, 007.

To date, there are currently 26,054 active Covid-19 cases countrywide, according to the media statement issued by the Prime Ministry and the Ministry of Health.

The statement added that the number of patients who were admitted to hospitals today stood at 95, while 87 cases have recovered and discharged.

According to the briefing, the total number of recoveries recorded Thursday, whether at hospitals or at home, stood at 2, 304 bringing the total to 1,035,143 since the outbreak began.

Moreover, the number of Covid-19 patients still receiving treatment at hospitals countrywide has reached 731.

The statement also indicated that occupancy of ICU beds in the northern, central and southern regions, has reached 34%, 34%, and 12%, respectively.

With regard to testing, 36,626 tests were conducted Thursday, 5.92 per cent of which were positive.

Since March 2020, the total number of tests administered has increased to 1,375,5650, the joint statement noted.

The statement also added that the total number of people who received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine has reached 4,437,798 and 4,038,284 have received their second shot.

Police thwart major currency counterfeiting scheme

Police said Thursday that they have busted two persons involved in a major currency counterfeiting scheme in the northern governorate of Jerash and seized JD250,000 in fake notes.

A statement by the Public Security Department (PSD) said police agents acted on a tip-off that a person is pushing and selling fake notes in the northern governorate.

After investigations, the police had two suspects, the statement indicated, adding that a task force raided the homes of both, arrested them and seized the fake notes in addition to printers and other equipment used in the counterfeiting scheme.

U.S. special envoy for Horn of Africa to leave post

U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Jeffrey Feltman will step down from his post after more than nine months in the job, and David Satterfield, the outgoing U.S. ambassador to Turkey, will take up the role in coming days, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

Blinken said Feltman will continued to serve the State Department in an advisory capacity.

Lower House approves amendments on Jordan’s constitution

A total of 104 deputies, out of 112 MPs, approved amendments on Jordan’s Constitution in a Lower House session on Thursday, headed by its Speaker, Abdul Karim Dughmi, and in the presence of Prime Minister Dr. Bishr Khasawneh and the Cabinet members.

Dughmi said the House discussions held with Jordan’s various players led to constitutional amendments, which were the outcome of His Majesty King Abdullah II’s vision, through the formation of the Royal Committee to Modernize the Political System (RCMPS).

The House , he said, has today completed the first phase of Jordan’s political modernization path by endorsing 30 constitutional amendments and will soon begin to debate and endorse elections and parties draft laws that will be a “milestone in Jordan’s modern history.”

On the local arena, Dughmi called on Jordanians to support the Kingdom’s political modernization path and push its success to achieve the country’s progress and prosperity under the King’s leadership.

Dughmi expressed thanks to the deputies for their “sincere” efforts made during the last period in debating and okaying the constitutional amendments.

Foreign Ministry offers condolences over victims of Palestine road accident

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, on Thursday, expressed condolences to the government and the people of Palestine over the victims of a road accident, which killed and injured a number of innocent people, in northern Jericho earlier in the day.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Haitham Abu Al Foul expressed the Kingdom’s solidarity with Palestine, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
