Hikma, MPP sign licensing agreement for COVID-19 pill

Hikma Pharmaceuticals signed a licensing agreement with the Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) to manufacture and market Molnupiravir, an oral antiviral medicine for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in adults.

In a statement on Thursday, the company said that the agreement aims at enhancing patients’ access to one of the most important drugs used to treat the coronavirus, developed by Merck, an American multinational pharmaceutical company, and to place it on the markets of the Middle East and North Africa.

Under the agreement, Hikma has the rights to use Merck’s patents and manufacturing expertise for the drug, and is responsible for manufacturing and marketing the product in 105 low- and middle-income countries in the Middle East.

Executive Vice Chairman and President of Hikma in the Middle East and North Africa Mazen Darwazah said that the agreement comes in line with the company’s mission to provide better health for all, and to facilitate the access for Molnupiravir use in low- and middle-income countries.

The agreement, he explained, reflects Hikma’s ongoing commitment to improving access to high-quality and affordable treatments, adding that the company is “looking forward to providing and enabling patients to use this treatment soon.”

ICRC calls for transfers of eligible Guantanamo detainees

The International Committee of the Red Cross called for accelerated efforts by the US government to transfer all of the detainees that it deemed eligible without further delay, and with due respect for their safety and opportunities for reintegration.

In a statement on Thursday, the ICRC said it is “gravely concerned” that the remaining people held at Guantanamo Bay have been behind bars for so many years with little or no clarity as to what will happen to them. The ICRC notes that some detainees remain in Guantanamo Bay today despite the fact they were deemed eligible for transfer more than ten years ago.

“The detainees deemed eligible by the US government should be transferred today,” said Patrick Hamilton, the ICRC’s head of delegation in the United States and Canada. “After 20 years and well over 100 visits, we see that the more time passes for these detainees, the more they and their families suffer. The humanitarian rationale for enabling those to leave who are cleared to do so is obvious, and all the more so for those whose departures have been delayed for so long,” he added.

The ICRC, an independent and neutral humanitarian organization, is empowered by the 1949 Geneva Conventions to visit detainees and prisoners of war to assess conditions of detention and treatment of people.

Israel’s demolition, settlement policy in Jerusalem a ‘racist’ crime-RCJA

Secretary-General of the Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs (RCJA), Abdullah Kanaan, described the “large-scale” Israeli policy of demolition and settlement in Jerusalem and its Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood as a crime that perpetuates its apartheid policy.

In his interview with “Petra,” on Thursday, Kanaan said Tel Aviv’s policy, especially the recent demolition of Salhiya family home in Jerusalem, shows that Israel is an apartheid racist state at the world level.

Kanaan pointed out that the RCJA affirms the “firm” Jordanian position under His Majesty King Abdullah II’s leadership, the historical custodian over Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian holy sites.

He also highlighted the King’s support to Palestinian cause in all forums, referring to his calls to achieve comprehensive and just peace and adhere to the two-state solution, including establishment of the Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital on the 1967 borders.

To end the current deadlock, he said RCJA hopes the world will support Jordan’s position and role that seeks stability in the region.

Israel’s policy, he noted, cannot achieve the region’s desired security and peace, especially in the context of its unilateral behavior that rejects international legitimacy resolutions, and the right of the Palestinian people to establish their state and preserve their Islamic and Christian sanctities.

RCJA appeals to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League to intensify their diplomatic, media, cultural and economic efforts to support Palestinian people’s rights and just cause, according to Kanaan.

Arctech Expands Global Footprint: Shine Forward in 2022

SHANGHAI, Jan. 20, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Arctech, the world’s leading tracking, racking, and BIPV solutions provider, reviewed the major milestones in 2021 and stepped into the new year with the expansion of its global footprint.

In 2021, Arctech has been taking a leap on expanding its global footprint and manufacturing bases close to its major markets worldwide. In Latam, the company announced its official subsidiary in Chile. With a portfolio of close to 1.6 GW in Latam, the company has now five local offices in Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, providing engineering, manufacturing and after-sales support for Arctech’s local operation, with an intent to source materials for its tracking systems from within the region to shore up competitiveness and diversify supply sources.

Arctech has also officially launched the Saudi Arabian subsidy early this year after successfully developing world-class projects, including Arctech’s 2.1GW Al Dhafra PV2 project in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The plant will be the largest of its kind in the Middle East when completed. The company has been awarded the “Regional Technology Provider of the Year Award” by Middle East Solar Industry Association for empowering the market with upfront technology.

The company has also been working on the consumer adoption of its champion tracker products in the US market. In 2021, Arctech witnessed a major breakthrough by successfully introducing SkySmart II, the first rigid 2P (two-in-portrait) tracker with multi-point parallel drive tracking system certified by TÜV Rheinland Group, to the US market.

Arctech has been enhancing its overseas OEM production capacity to meet the logistics cost challenges brought by the high sea freight charges. Now, the company has suppliers from 14 countries worldwide including US, India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Vietnam among others.

Further announced its vertically integrated production plan in India, the company is amping up 3GW tracker products to meet the demand from global markets by building an Indian manufacturing base. It is estimated to enter operation in the first half of 2022. India is one of the biggest markets for Arctech, which is proved by Wood Mackenzie’s 2021 report. The report says the company has topped the ranking in the Asian Pacific region with a 35% market share, aided by the unparalleled leadership in the Indian solar market, where it maintained the No. 1 tracker supplier for three consecutive years. Arctech struck a deal with one leading Indian developer to supply 1.7 GW of 1P SkyLine trackers to two projects in Rajasthan. In particular, the 860MW AEML solar power plant is the largest bifacial tracker power generation project in India.

Besides the Indian manufacturing base, Arctech has a fully-operational manufacturing facility with a production capacity of 6.4 GW, and an additional 2.8 GW production capacity from the Fanchang manufacturing base in trial operation.

“2022 will be a year of both opportunities and challenges. We will also stay alert to the challenges and uncertainties and continuously gear up for global expansion.” Remarked Allen Cao, the General Manager of International Business at Arctech.

Editorial: Schlissel’s flouting of own policy earned his firing

Published by
The Detroit News

The ouster of University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel after a relationship with a subordinate came to light is a disappointing but necessary end to his tenure. Now, the Board of Regents must turn its attention to finding his replacement and moving the university firmly past persistent episodes of sexual impropriety. While Schlissel’s personal life is his own, the hubris and hypocrisy of his actions is egregious, coming at a time when the university is dealing with the aftermath of multiple sexual misconduct and abuse cases. He violated his own zero-tolerance policy, which clearly forbi…

Sweegen Praises New Framework on Stevia Technology By International Food Safety Authority

Sets Global Example on Standards for Countries

Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Jan. 20, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Sweegen’s health and wellness commitment through global sugar reduction solutions became stronger after Codex Alimentarius (Codex), the international food standard safety authority, recently adopted the specifications for all four stevia technologies, including Sweegen’s bioconversion.

“The new Codex framework is timely as the benefits of steviol glycosides, the sweet component in the stevia leaf, fit into the broader health and wellness narrative, which is something consumers want to see more of, and global food and beverage manufacturers want greater access to,” said Luca Giannone, senior vice president of sales.

The significance of the adoption is that there is now a more streamlined approach to regional adoption of new production technologies. This will provide greater access to less common and better-tasting steviol glycosides at scale and a more sustainable supply of the sugar-like tasting ingredients.

Sweegen’s support for adopting the “Framework for Stevia Technology” started four years ago as a member of the alliance group, the International Stevia Council (ISC). Adopting the framework was a stevia industry effort and collaboration internationally where Sweegen represented bioconversion technology.

“With this framework, most countries in the world will gradually adopt this standard, and our global stevia footprint can expand more rapidly into countries where we are seeking approval for offering our pure, clean, and great-tasting Signature Bestevia ingredients produced by bioconversion,” said Giannone.

Modern technology advancements, such as bioconversion, produce clean new generation sweetener molecules such as Rebaudiosides M, D, and E, originally found in small quantities in the stevia leaf. Unlike first-generation ingredients like Rebaudioside A, these rebaudiosides impart a clean sugar-like taste with a better sensory profile and are highly sought-after by food and beverage manufacturers in countries where they have regulatory approvals.

“The adopted framework is good news for brands that want greater access to Sweegen’s pure and clean tasting stevia ingredients, Rebs D, E, M, and more,” said Giannone. “By leveraging proprietary bioconversion technology, we start with the stevia leaf, and with the support of enzymes, produce a final product that is a single purified steviol glycoside (not a mixture) that naturally occurs in the stevia leaf.”

Under the new framework, all of Sweegen’s rebaudiosides are approved by Codex. Last year, Sweegen earned regulatory approval for its Signature Bestevia Reb M in Europe, which enables greater flexibility in satisfying regional preferences for sweetness and great taste.

“We welcome the adoption of the Codex framework and the opportunity to support our customers globally with new sugar reduction innovations,” said Steven Chen, Sweegen’s chief executive officer. “Sweegen is proud to be part of this collaborative effort to bring much-needed innovation to the food and beverage industry.”
