Safadi, Norwegian counterpart discuss ending escalation in Jerusalem

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi Saturday received a phone call from his Norwegian counterpart Anniken Scharning Huitfeldt and discussed efforts to restore calm in Jerusalem and its holy sites.

They also talked about steps needed to stop the escalation and prompt Israel to respect the legal and historical status quo at Al-Aqsa Mosque/ Al-Haram Al-Sharif and ensure freedom of worship without restrictions.

Safadi said Israel should halt all measures that undermine the historical and legal status quo at Al-Haram Al-Sharif, including incursions by extremists, noting that a ban on the entry of non-Muslims to the compound during the last ten days of the holy month of Ramadan is “a step in the right direction towards respecting the existing historical status quo, which will help to defuse tension.”

Safadi and Huitfeldt also agreed that work is needed to find a “real political horizon” to return to serious and effective negotiations to resolve the Palestinian issue on the basis of the two-state solution and the international law.

He warned against the consequences of the continued absence of a horizon to relaunch a real effort to solve the conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, stressing that an international effort should not be restricted to ending the current escalation, but should evolve into a sustainable effort to address the root causes of the conflict, which could further explode unless hope in a meaningful peace process is restored.

Safadi lauded the position of Norway, currently a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, in supporting the two-state solution and its efforts to breathe new life into the peace process, as well as its role as chair of the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee (AHLC), the body that coordinates the delivery of international aid to Palestinians.

The ministers agreed to continue coordination and consultation to end the cycle of violence and tension and look for practical steps to create a real political horizon to resume serious and effective negotiations to achieve the two-state solution.

Explosion at Nigerian illegal oil refinery kills over 100

More than 100 people were killed overnight in an explosion at an illegal oil refining depot in Nigeria’s Rivers state, a local government official and an environmental group said on Saturday.

“The fire outbreak occurred at an illegal bunkering site and it affected over 100 people who were burnt beyond recognition,” the state commissioner for petroleum resources, Goodluck Opiah, said.

According to Reuters, unemployment and poverty in the oil-producing Niger Delta have made illegal crude refining an attractive business but with deadly consequences. Crude oil is tapped from a web of pipelines owned by major oil companies and refined into products in makeshift tanks.

Canadian market provides ‘remarkable’ opportunities for Jordanian industry-JEA

Jordanian companies specialized in the food industry concluded their participation, organized by Jordan Exporters Association (JEA), with the support of the Ministry of Investment, in the 17th SIAL Canada-“Inspire Food Business,” which was held in Montreal.

According to a JEA statement on Saturday, Jordanian companies, which took part in in the three-day event, specialized in industries operating in the foodstuff, dessert and dietary products, including companies owned by businesswomen.

JEA chief, Halim Abu Rahma, said SIAL show is a food fair in North America, and targets the important and promising Canadian market for the Jordanian industry, due to the presence of a free trade agreement (FTA) linking the two countries, in addition to activity of large Arab and Middle Eastern communities.

Foreign exhibitions are the most powerful tool in promoting Jordanian exports, he noted, adding that the JEA , since its establishment, has implemented activities that would open the way and prospects for local products to enter global markets.

JEA’s promotional activities are not limited to the Canadian market only, but extend to various countries, especially the United States and some Arab and European countries, in which the Jordanian industry has “remarkable” opportunities to be present and compete, Abu Rahma pointed out.

In addition, he stressed that increasing exports is a major pillar in stimulating national economy, generating more job opportunities, expanding investments, and supporting the Kingdom’s foreign exchange reserves.

JEA’s eight-year cooperation with the Trade Facilitation Office (TFO) Canada has proven “very effective” in terms of promoting Jordanian industrial exports and enhancing their presence in the Canadian market, and given an added value to marketing activity, in addition to providing Jordanian companies with all the details needed, and organizing bilateral meetings for participants, he noted.

Lauding Ministry of Investment’s role in supporting the companies participating in the Sial show, he noted Jordan’s participation in other exhibitions aimed to contribute to promoting national industry and its delivery to global markets.

Two days before the start of the exhibition, which was attended by 750 exhibitors representing 50 countries, he said JEA implemented an integrated promotional program for the participating Jordanian companies on the Canadian market and their commercial opportunities and organized field visits to Canadian warehouses that import similar products to the national industry.
