The Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission (CARC) on Tuesday denied the validity of circulated information concerning the closure of the Jordanian airspace.

In a statement, CARC Chief Commissioner, Captain Haitham Mesto, confirmed that the Kingdom’s airspace was not closed at all, with non-stop international aviation transit as usual.

“The suspension of take-off and landing took place in Queen Alia International Airport for a period of 40 minutes only; for the purpose of preserving the safety and security of civil aviation,” he explained.

The Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) has received a delegation of Polish journalists to conduct a tour in the Kingdom.

JTB Director-General Abdul Razzaq Arabiyat said the visit is within the board’s plans to promote tourism in Jordan, according to a JTB statement on Tuesday.

He added that the visit came for the Polish to look firsthand at tourism and archeological sites, and to promote Jordan’s features in Polish media.

The Polish delegation commended archeological sites in the Kingdom and its attractive and diverse environment.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, met with Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry, on Monday evening to discuss further collaboration and coordination.

On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Safadi and Shoukry discussed steps taken by both countries to translate their “brotherly strategic relations” into comprehensive cooperation and in context of the trilateral cooperation with Iraq.

The two ministers also discussed how to put the outcomes of the Jordanian-Egyptian-Emirati summit, which was held in Cairo on April 24th, into practice.

They also called for further coordination in order to find a political solution for the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution, which would ensure Palestinians’ legitimate rights.

The two ministers also discussed a number of regional and global issues of mutual relevance. They have decided to meet again shortly to continue discussing how to cope with such challenges in the future.

Morgan Stanley Capital International Inc. (MSCI) has listed the Jordan Phosphate Mines Company (JPMC), a public shareholding company, on the MSCI Frontier Market 100 Index, and will be available for international investment funds as of May 31, 2022.

The listing came after the company met a set of financial standards, including profitability, liquidity, and share market value, as well as the company’s potential to generate continuing additional value for its shareholders, according to a disclosure by the JPMC.

It’s worth noting that the JPMC has taken a number of steps in recent years to improve its performance, limit expenses, lower production costs, and expand into new worldwide markets.

This had a favorable impact on the company’s performance, profitability, and ability to contribute to the national economy while also generating higher returns for its shareholders.

The Milipol Qatar 2022, an international event for homeland security and civil defense, kicked off on Tuesday morning, under the patronage of the Emir of Qatar.

Representing Jordan, Director of the Public Security Department (PSD) Maj. Gen. Hussein Hawatmeh took part in the opening ceremony of the exhibition. Jordan has always been committed to participating in the annual event alternately hosted by Doha and Paris.

The exhibition, held from May 24 to 26, was inaugurated by Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani. A total of 220 companies representing 22 countries from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and North America, are taking part in the exhibition.

Qatar’s Prime Minister toured the exhibition’s pavilions that showcase many homeland security and civil defense systems and devices produced by different participating countries. Milipol Qatar 2022 is a great opportunity for experts to look firsthand at the latest products and equipment in this field. Many deals are expected to be signed between the participants.

In a statement, the event’s organizing committee said 60 percent of the participants this year are new faces. The exhibition includes five national pavilions representing France, North America, Germany, Italy, and Austria for the first time.

According to the organizing committee, this year’s edition is held on an area of 7,000 cubic meters, two-folds bigger than the previous edition. The number of exhibitors has also increased to about triple the amount of last year, it added.

Milipol, the committee noted, has succeeded in being a leading regional event in homeland security and civil defense fields. Many agreements worth tens of millions of Dollars were signed last year.

Cybersecurity risks will also be discussed in Milipol Qatar by global and local experts, providing a host of solutions to mitigate the growing cybersecurity risks.

On the sidelines of the event, PSD’s director also met his Qatari counterpart, discussing prospects of cooperation.

Jamal Abdel Mawla, the Jordan Chamber of Commerce’s (JCC) construction sector representative, affirmed on Tuesday that unprocessed timber prices in the local market are stable, and said he was “startled” by calls for price ceilings.

The global economic conditions caused by the Corona pandemic, as well as the unusual surge in the prices of raw materials in the countries of origin and sea freight costs, influenced timber prices, according to Abdel Mawla.

He noted that Jordan imports unprocessed timber of all kinds from a number of countries, including Indonesia, China, Germany, Thailand, Sweden, and Finland, which are duty-free but subject to a 16 percent sales tax.

He called the demand for a price ceiling for unprocessed timber “irrational,” claiming that the commodity isn’t strategic and is governed by supply and demand.

The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), the Aqaba Development Company, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) inked a technical assistance agreement on Tuesday to help the authority modernize the master plan of the southern coastal city.

The project will be carried out with the support of the Japanese government, in collaboration and coordination with the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, through technical assistance provided by JICA to Jordanian institutions and ministries.

The project entails formulating a vision, strategies, plans, and sectoral policies for urban social and economic development, according to Nayf Bakhit, ASEZA’s chief commissioner.

He emphasized that this will lead to increased investment opportunities in all development areas, including economic and social aspects, with a focus on land use efficiency.

He added that the project aims to strengthen ASEZA and Aqaba Development Company’s urban planning capabilities by incorporating the latest and best international practices, as well as bringing in international expertise, which will result in better procedure management and service delivery in the areas of real estate regulation and development.

Bakhit emphasized that the project is critical to accelerating Aqaba’s economic development and improving services for citizens and visitors, applauding JICA’s role in providing technical assistance to ASEZA through this project, which is set to begin in August 2022.

Miyahara Chie, JICA’s Chief Representative in Jordan, stated that JICA is proud to collaborate with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone and support its long-term growth goals.

She went on to say that Aqaba has shown throughout the years that it can play a bigger role than envisaged, evolving into a significant export/import hub not just for Jordan but also for the region, increasing tourism potential, and serving as a critical location for water and energy security.

She noted that JICA has been active in Jordan’s northern region for the past few years, but is now looking forward to expanding its activities in the south, particularly by launching a new partnership with ASEZA, with the hope that this project will become the cornerstone of JICA and the Authority’s activities in the years to come.
