Baydoon sworn in as member of Constitutional Court

Maysa Baydoon was sworn in before His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday as a member of the Constitutional Court.

Constitutional Court President Hisham Tal and Royal Hashemite Court Chief Yousef Issawi attended the swearing-in, which took place at Al Husseiniya Palace.

Jordan’s Covid-19 cases up by 37% over last week- Health Ministry

The Ministry of Health (MoH) Sunday said the 25th epidemiological week of 2022, which runs from June 18 to June 24, saw 842 Covid-19 cases, compared to 642 the last week, an increase of about 37%.

In its weekly roundup, the MoH said no COVID-19 detahs were recorded in the reporting period for the third week in a row.

The number of “PCR” tests conducted during the 25th week amounted to 13,127, compared to 11,694 tests during the previous week, with a 6.7% increase.

The number of COVID-19 patients receiving treatment in the Kingdom’s hospitals reached 4, compared to 5 the previous week.

The number of Jordan’s active cases reached 703, compared to 502 infects during the 24th week, a 39% increase.

Regarding the Covid-19 vaccine, the MoH added that the number of first jab recipients during the 25th week reached 3,323, compared to 3,219 during the previous week, while the second doses given hit 6,473 compared to 7,255.

More than 4,801,379 Jordanians received the first dose of the vaccine, constituting 75% of the target group of 18 and older; while the overall second dose reached 4,534,574, marking a 71% of the same target category, and the tally of the booster shot reached 665,539.

Regarding vaccination in the 12-17 age group, the MoH said the number of first dose recipients was 237,012, at a 25% rate, and double-jabbed people for the same category hit 200,124, at a 20% rate, while vaccination in the 5-11 age group with a first dose hit 262 and 188 others were double jabbed.

Britain offers grant to Jordan worth £50.2mln…1st, final add

According to the statement, Shraideh discussed with Milling, ways to enhance Jordan-UK relations in various fields, the latest developments on the regional and international arenas, “remarkable” challenges related to impact on supply chains of basic commodities and their high prices, due to Covid-19 repercussions and consequences of the Ukrainian-Russian crisis.

Shraideh lauded UK’s role and its continuous support to help Jordan overcome the challenges imposed by the region’s instability on the Jordanian economy, support its development process, address Syrian refugee burdens and back Amman in such “exceptional” circumstances.

During the meeting, the British visiting delegation was briefed on the axes of the Kingdom’s Economic Modernization Vision until 2033, government priorities within the framework of the Government’s Indicative Executive Program 2021-2024, and Jordan’s reforms being implemented within the Jordan Reform Matrix, in addition to discussing the ongoing repercussions of hosting Syrian refugees in the Kingdom.

For her part, Milling highlighted the newly launched UK international development strategy, which would contribute to facing increasing global challenges by offering investments, supporting women, and providing humanitarian aid to people in dire need and maintaining efforts on climate change, nature conservation and global health.

Milling also lauded Jordan’s capability to deal with external challenges and shocks, commending its role, under His Majesty King Abdullah II’s leadership, in the region and in advancing “important” reforms in priority sectors for inclusive and sustainable growth for all, providing job opportunities, especially for young people, and creating a youth-enabling environment to achieve their goals.

Since 2020, the UK government has provided grants worth 34mln pounds to support Jordan’s social protection network and help the Kingdom overcome the Covid-19 pandemic’s consequences by supporting National Aid Fund’s programs, and also contributed to funding priority projects related to water sanitation, education, economic reforms and municipal services.

King meets Palestinian president, says nothing more important to Jordan than Palestinian cause

His Majesty King Abdullah, during a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at Al Husseiniya Palace on Sunday, reaffirmed Jordan’s unwavering position towards the Palestinian cause and its support for the Palestinians in fulfilling their just and legitimate rights.

King Abdullah said Jordan always stands with the Palestinian people, and nothing is more important to the Kingdom than the Palestinian cause.

His Majesty said the only way to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is through the two-state solution, which guarantees the establishment of an independent, sovereign, and viable Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The King reaffirmed the importance of preserving the historical and legal status quo at Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif, stressing that Jordan will continue to safeguard Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, under the Hashemite Custodianship.

His Majesty and President Abbas said the next step required now is to cease unilateral measures to open the way to resuming negotiations in the future.

The King said Jordan is in constant communication with the United States, and is working to have the Palestinian cause at the top of US President Joe Biden’s agenda during his visit to the region next month.

His Majesty said Jordan will fully support the rights of the Palestinian people and their cause during its participation in the Summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council plus Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan in Jeddah.

The King reiterated that no progress can be made on regional economic cooperation without making progress in efforts to resolve the Palestinian cause to serve the interests of the Palestinian people.

The meeting covered the latest developments in Israel after the dissolution of the Knesset and their repercussions on peace prospects, as well as the latest regional developments.

For his part, President Abbas thanked Jordan for supporting the rights of the Palestinian people, noting that wherever Jordan is present on the international stage, the Palestinian cause is represented.

The Palestinian president commended Jordan’s efforts to safeguard Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, under the Hashemite Custodianship.

He also highlighted the challenges faced by the Palestinians in the Palestinian Territories as a result of Israeli measures.

Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan, and General Intelligence Department Director Maj. Gen. Ahmad Husni attended the meeting on the Jordanian side.

On the Palestinian side, Secretary General of the Palestine Liberation Organisation’s Executive Committee Hussein Sheikh, General Intelligence Service Director Majid Faraj, Senior Diplomatic Adviser to the President Majdi Khaldi, and Palestinian Ambassador to Jordan Atallah Khairi were in attendance.
