CGTN: Why China’s development philosophy can help promote global prosperity

BEIJING, June 26, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — As the world is faced with stiff challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, regional conflicts, and backlash against globalization, the international community is striving for maintaining development while tackling deficits in global peace and governance.

This is an age rife with challenges, but it is also an age full of hope,” Chinese President Xi Jinping pointed out as he hosted the High-level Dialogue on Global Development on Friday in virtual format.

Xi noted some countries have politicized and marginalized the development issue, built “a small yard with high fences,” imposed maximum sanctions, and stoked division and confrontation.

And he urged international community to recognize the prevailing trend of the world, firm up confidence, and act in unison and with great motivation to promote global development and foster a development paradigm featuring benefits for all, balance, coordination, inclusiveness, win-win cooperation and common prosperity.

Realizing people’s dream for a better life

Xi recounted the story and his experience of being a farmer on the Loess Plateau in the late 1960s when speaking at the event.

He said that after visiting cities, towns and villages across China and many countries in the world throughout the years, one deep impression he got is that only through continuous development can the people’s dream for a better life and social stability be realized.

Stressing placing development at the center of international agenda, Xi called for implementing the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and building a political consensus that development is valued by all people and cooperation is jointly pursued by all countries.

Pursuing common development

Under Xi’s guidance, China has been committed to building a world of common prosperity. On Friday, Xi made four proposals for promoting common development.

He called for jointly building international consensus on promoting development. “Only when people all over the world live better lives can prosperity be sustained, security safeguarded and human rights solidly grounded.”

He said the international community should work together to create an enabling international environment for development featured with open world economy and a just and equitable global governance system.

Protectionist moves will boomerang; anyone attempting to form exclusive blocs will end up isolating himself, Xi noted, adding maximum sanctions serve nobody’s interest, and practices of decoupling and supply disruption are neither feasible nor sustainable.

The Chinese president also highlighted the necessity of fostering new drivers for development, saying efforts should be made to step up scientific and technological innovation as well as institutional innovation, advance modern industries, bridge the digital gap, and speed up low-carbon transition.

In terms of development, no country or individual should be left behind, Xi stressed, calling for forging a global development partnership.

“Developed countries should fulfill their obligations, developing countries should deepen cooperation, and the South and the North should meet each other halfway,” said Xi.

China’s solid promise

Bearing in mind the well-being of the entire humanity, Xi proposed the Global Development Initiative (GDI) at the General Debate of the 76th United Nations General Assembly in September 2021 in steering global development toward a new stage of balanced, coordinated and inclusive growth, which has been warmly received and strongly supported by more than 100 countries.

On Friday, Xi announced China’s further pragmatic steps to give continued support to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and promote global prosperity.

He said China will upgrade the South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund to a Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund, adding $1 billion to the fund on top of the $3 billion already committed as well as increase input to the UN Peace and Development Trust Fund.

China is willing to work with all sides to advance cooperation in poverty reduction and eradication, food production and supply, green development, vaccines’ innovation, research and development as well as enhancing industrialization and connectivity, Xi noted.

According to the Chinese president, the country will set up a platform for experience and knowledge sharing on international development, a global development promotion center and a global knowledge network for development, for the purpose of exchanging governance experience and promoting mutual learning.

“We will host a global forum on youth development and take part in the launch of a global action plan on youth development, in a bid to pool as much strength as possible for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” said Xi.

WANA Institute concludes Jordanian CBOs training project

The West Asia-North Africa (WANA) Institute and the European Delegation in Jordan collaborated on a two-year training and grant project to help Jordanian civil society organizations use their platforms to address environmental issues. The project’s goal was to improve the technical, administrative, and financial capabilities of community-based organizations (CBOs) for long-term outcomes in both the southern and northern parts of the kingdom.

In “Training for Change: Empowering Civil Society to Advocate Policies,” training took place over the course of eight months, and then the CBOs were coached and mentored for ten months as they carried out environmental projects intended to address urgent local issues.

Along with two other project partners, the Intermediaries Change Center for Sustainable Development in Ajloun and Al-Khansa for Social Development in Tafileh, the WANA Institute has been overseeing the training and grants project’s implementation in various communities throughout Jordan since February 2020. The training helped the CBOs identify, design, and submit grant applications to address urgent environmental problems in their local communities. Topics covered in the training included environmental agreements, local environmental challenges, research, analysis, and policy advocacy.

Moreover, an online map “Tashbeek” was developed and launched, listing a network of Jordanian Civil Society Organisations (CSOs). The overall aim of this platform was to bring together a network of Jordan’s CSOs, making sure all are visually represented on the national CSO landscape. The tool provides a Geographic Information Systems-based map, colour-coding CSOs, and provides a brief account of CSOs’ areas of activity, and a database for Call for Proposals translated to Arabic.

Professor Mashhoor Al-Refai President of PSUT-Princess Sumaya University for Technology, conveyed Her Royal Highness’s remarks today at the closing ceremony: “The replication of such a project to include other community-based organisations, will lead to culmination of the energies and harnessing these efforts to improve the people’s lives in Jordan, because our people are the first and most important wealth in this country. Hence, it is necessary to provide a mechanism for cooperation among these organisations to unify efforts, exchange experiences and disseminate them. We at the Royal Scientific Society aspire for active participation with scientific research institutions with the support of the European Union, to move our country to a knowledge-based economy.

Maria Hadjitheodosiou, Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Jordan, stressed on the crucial role the CSOs and CBOs shall play as development partners in improving governance and local development, fostering accountability and transparency, and reinforcing inclusive policy-making. “Training for Change: Empowering Civil Society to Advocate Policies Project is equally unique as it addresses not only the involvement of CBOs in advocating polices but also highlighting their role in the environmental challenges including water scarcity, climate change, solid waste management and agriculture, and paving the way for more innovative sustainable solutions in these thematic areas.”

Majd Al Naber, the project Manager, emphasised the importance of including the CBOs in the sustainable development agenda to ensure enhancing their resilience towards environmental challenges, to be able to turn these challenges into opportunities.

Reform; Jordan’s irreversible goal — Senate president

– President of the Senate Faisal Fayez on Sunday said that Jordan is actively pursuing comprehensive economic and political reforms, stressing that reform is an irreversible goal despite all challenges.

Fayez’s remarks came as he received a delegation from the National Democratic Institute (NDI), an American non-profit pro-democracy organization, led by the Institute’s regional director, Leslie Campbell.

The political development model that Jordan is pursuing, he continued, is a pluralistic state of law that encourages public participation, upholds human rights, safeguards fundamental liberties, and strengthens the concepts of accountability and justice.

Jordan, according to the Senate President, is a state that believes in peace and the values of love and justice and refuses to interfere in the affairs of others and believes in the importance of respecting states’ sovereignty and the right of their peoples to self-determination.

Speaking about Middle Eastern issues, Fayez referred to the Syrian crisis as a catastrophe that the UN was unable to resolve and said that this Arab nation has turned into an arena for international and regional actors to settle scores.

He added that terrorist and extremist groups are regaining a foothold in Syria, and that transnational drug trafficking networks are flourishing there.

Fayez stated that the Palestinian people are currently under the longest occupation in human history and that attempts to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict have failed as a result of Israeli intransigence and the extreme right’s hold on the government.

He further said that His Majesty King Abdullah II consistently maintains that only the two-state solution can resolve the Palestinian conflict and that any other proposals that do not give the Palestinian people access to a sovereign state on pre-June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, are “nihilistic” and will only inflame regional conflict and violence.

Palestinian FM urges implementation of UN resolution 2334

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry on Monday urged the international community to help implement UN Security Council resolution 2334 that calls for a halt to Jewish settlements and prompt Israel to engage in a real peace process to end the occupation.

The ministry said in a statement that it tracked the occupying state’s daily crimes and violations against the people of Palestine at the political, diplomatic and legal levels.

It held the Israeli government fully and directly responsible for the escalation against “our people and their rights,” urging a serious stance against such dangerous actions that could lead to an explosion as Israel “closed the political horizon” for a solution to the conflict.

The ministry said the occupying power is exploiting the “double international standards and failure to implement international legitimacy resolutions on the Palestinian issue to deepen settlements and the gradual annexation of the West Bank with the aim of unilaterally and forcefully deciding final status issues.”

The statement decried the theft of Palestinian land by the occupying state and its various arms, namely pro-settlement agencies, the latest of which was, according to Israeli media, an attempt to register in the names of Jewish people Palestinian land in neighborhoods of occupied East Jerusalem and areas adjacent to Al Aqsa Mosque compound.

Such action, it pointed out, is a flagrant violation of the international law, international legitimacy resolutions and signed agreements.

The Palestinian ministry said that Israeli actions in occupied Jerusalem are part and parcel of its scheme to Judaize Jerusalem, perpetuate its annexation and undermine and eliminate the historical, demographic, and legal Palestinian presence in the Holy City.

It also condemned the escalation in Jewish settler attacks against the Palestinians and their property across the West Bank.
