Safadi holds meetings with counterparts in NATO Summit

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi on Wednesday held a series of meetings with a number of his counterparts participating in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit in Madrid.

The meetings dealt with bilateral relations under the EU-Jordan partnership, in addition to international and regional developments, foremost of which was the Palestinian cause and efforts exerted to move toward peace on the basis of the two-state solution.

The diplomats also tackled a political solution to the Syrian crisis, Iraq and its stability, supporting Lebanon, and the repercussions of the Ukrainian crisis on food security and energy.

Safadi held talks with the Foreign Ministers of the Netherlands; Wopke Hoekstra, Turkey; Mevlut Cavusoglu, Sweden; Ann Linde, Germany; Annalena Baerbock, Spain; Jose Manuel Albares Bueno, Italy; Luigi Di Maio, Canada; Melanie Joly, Slovenia; Tanja Fajon and France; Catherine Colonna.

The minister also met with his Mauritanian counterpart Mohamed Salem Marzouk, and discussed means of cementing bilateral cooperation in many fields.

Social development minister, Italian envoy talk cooperation

Minister of Social Development Ayman Mufleh discussed with Italian Ambassador Luciano Pezzotti cooperation opportunities in the social development sector.

The two officials discussed boosting and exchanging expertise in the field of disabled people’s rights during a meeting on Thursday.

They also talked about social domestic violence and the role of civil society organizations in this field.

Europe heatwave breaks multiple June records

Intense heat across much of Europe has seen June temperature records broken from the Arctic Circle to North Africa.

The ferocious heatwave has caused temperatures to rise well above the June average for many countries, in some cases by as much as 20 degrees.

Norway recorded a temperature of 32.5C at Banak on Wednesday, reportedly the highest temperature ever recorded within the Arctic Circle in Europe, and significantly higher than the June average of 13C.

Poland saw temperatures reach the mid-thirties on Monday, and parts of eastern Germany saw several locations reach 37C.

Fair weather forecast over weekend

Temperatures on Thursday remain around their seasonal average, so moderate weather conditions are expected to prevail in the highlands and the plains, while it will be hot in other parts of the Kingdom, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said in its daily brief.

Friday and Saturday are forecast to bring in similar weather conditions, with low clouds in the western areas of the country, the JMD added.

The highs in Amman and other highlands across the Kingdom on Thursday will range between 28 and 32 degrees Celsius, dropping at night to 20C or even 17C in the southern highlands. In the Gulf city of Aqaba, it will be much hotter with mercury reaching a high of 40C and a low of 28C.

Agriculture minister, FAO discuss water harvesting projects

Minister of Agriculture Khaled Hanaifat met with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative in Jordan, Nabil Assaf, on Wednesday to discuss joint projects to maximize water harvesting under the National Plan for Sustainable Agriculture (2022-2025).

According to a statement issued by the ministry on Thursday, the plan targets 10,000 wells and 60 earthfill dams and embankments, which will benefit urban water supply and livestock breeders in Badia and across the governorates.

During the meeting, the minister praised the FAO’s ongoing collaboration with the ministry in order to develop Jordan’s agricultural sector.
