National Student Debate Competition winner announced

The Crown Prince Foundation (CPF) on Thursday concluded the 2021/2022 National Student Debate Competition, which kicked off Wednesday as part of the “I Participate” program.

The Jordan university of science and technology (JUST) took home first place, announced the CPF in a statement on Thursday. Winners of the nationwide competition, which brought together 72 participants from 12 universities, were handed trophies during the concluding ceremony at the Amman Bristol Hotel.

The “I Participate” program was implemented in 12 universities to boost the youth’s capacities, knowledge of the democratic process’s basic principles, and advocacy skills, said Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the CPF Ghassan Nuqul.

It offers a series of guided, interactive discussion sessions on democratic concepts and processes to raise awareness of Jordanian youth on political participation and create safe avenues for youth to discuss, debate, and exercise democratic principles and international best practices.

The competition, as the name implies, is a debate between student teams on a topic of public interest, in which they are expected to use the evidence-gathering and argumentation skills they acquired through the “I Participate” program to support their arguments on either side.

15 arrested over Channel tragedy

Fifteen people have been arrested in France on suspicion of being part of a people-smuggling ring that was involved in one of the deadliest incidents seen in the English Channel.

In November, 27 people died when their flimsy boat sank near Calais as they tried to make the dangerous journey across the Channel to reach the UK.

Seven months on, French police have now indicted 13 men and two women.

Some could face charges of involuntary manslaughter and people smuggling.

According to French media, the arrests were made at the start of this week in northern and eastern regions of France, as well as various locations across Paris.

Five people have already been released without charge at this stage.

One person has been placed under formal investigation and nine will face a judge at some point on Thursday to determine if they will also be placed under formal investigation.

FM urges concrete steps to address repercussions of Ukraine crisis

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi has called for concrete and effective steps to address the implications of the Ukrainian crisis on food security, energy prices, and supply chains.

He reiterated the Kingdom’s call to uphold international law and the UN Charter, respect countries’ sovereignty and territorial integrity, and resolve the conflict in Ukraine in accordance with these principles.

Safadi’s remarks came during a working dinner on Tuesday with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) foreign ministers, who are currently meeting in Madrid.

The minister, who is also deputy prime minister, reviewed the Kingdom’s relations with NATO, and Jordan’s role in the Mediterranean Dialogue group since 1995.

The minister also presented the Kingdom’s vision for addressing challenges in the Middle East and around the world, particularly the Palestinian issue, the Syrian crisis, and the refugee crisis, as well as the ramifications of the Ukrainian crisis on the region, particularly on food and energy security.

While aiding Ukrainian refugees is necessary, Safadi emphasized that the international community must also continue to fulfill its obligations to Syrian refugees and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

He warned of the risk of the Syrian crisis persisting and called for intensified efforts to find a political resolution.

Safadi stressed that Jordan will continue to be a force for peace and stability, as well as a voice of moderation, making every effort to achieve a just and all-encompassing peace, stability, and development. He warned that terrorism remains a shared threat that requires collective action to eradicate.

During the meeting, NATO foreign ministers emphasized the alliance’s deep and solid partnership with the Kingdom, as well as Jordan’s central role in enhancing regional security and stability.

Jordan has had institutional relations with NATO since 1995, when it joined the “Mediterranean Dialogue” initiative, which aims to strengthen the alliance’s partnership with seven Mediterranean countries in order to frame means of cooperation and coordination for security and stability.

Since 2014, the Kingdom has had “advanced partnership” status with NATO, along with Australia, Sweden, Finland, Georgia, and Ukraine.
