JMD: Hot weather forecast today

Relatively hot weather is expected to prevail in the highlands and the plains, while it will be hot in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, Aqaba and the Badia areas, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said in its forecast for Monday.

Mercury levels will rise few degrees on Tuesday, bringing hot weather in most parts of the Kingdom, except in the heights where it will be relatively hot, with northwesterly moderate to brisk winds, the forecasters added.

As we head into Wednesday, temperatures will continue to soar as the country will be gripped by a brutal heat wave that will trigger scorching conditions in most regions, the JMD predicted, noting that the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and Aqaba are set to swelter in blistering weather.

The highs in Amman and other highlands across the Kingdom today will range between 34 and 30 degrees Celsius. In the late afternoon and evening hours, cooler weather is forecast as mercury levels slide to around 20C.

In the port city of Aqaba, daytime temperatures will stand at 41C, while lows will drop to 28C at night.

Police make arrests in 13-year-old murder case

The Public Security Department’s (PSD) Criminal Investigation Unit revealed Monday the circumstances of a 2009 murder, in which a group of brothers allegedly plotted and murdered their sister.

After receiving new information, officers of the cold cases team conducted an investigation and found that the brothers had not reported their sister missing and had led acquaintances to believe that the victim was out of the country, raising officers’ suspicions. However, the team confirmed that the sister did not, in fact, leave the Kingdom and that there were no traces of her inside the country, according to the PSD’s spokesperson.

Officers questioned the suspects who then confessed to strangling their sister and loading the body into a vehicle and dumping it in the Kasarat area in the Madaba governorate.

Search teams are looking for the remains of the body in the area, the spokesperson added, stating that the suspects will be referred to the Grand Criminal Court.

PM: Regulatory bodies must be neutral, non-partisan

Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh said Monday that the philosophy behind the draft amending the National Center for Human Rights law, which the government passed to Parliament, is fully consistent with the empowerment of political parties, but stressed that supervisory bodies must remain non-partisan.

“This philosophy stipulates that supervision bodies be neutral, similar to security services and the armed forces, the judiciary, administrative governors, members of the diplomatic corps, the Central Bank Governor and other entities specified under the parties law now in force, since they represent the entire country, and not based on affiliation to a certain party,” he told lawmakers during a Lower House session.

The proposed amendment, which requires that anyone appointed as chairman of the board of trustees or commissioner general of the center not be affiliated with any political party, is in line with Article (6) of the Political Parties Law now in force, he said.

The Prime Minister stressed that the proposed amendment is not in conflict with the promotion of partisan work, noting that many administrative procedures and regulations concerning political and partisan work in universities are undergoing change to encourage young people to engage in it.

Regulatory bodies that oversee and issue reports related to the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms must be neutral, and thus those responsible for them must not be affiliated with parties, he concluded.
