UNICEF condemns killing of three children in Iraq

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) on Thursday condemned an attack in the Dohuk governorate in Iraq, which killed nine tourists, including three children, and wounded 23 others.

UNICEF Representative in Iraq Sheema SenGupta said in a statement that “At least three children were killed and several wounded in Zakho, northern Iraq. This is devastating proof of the need to stop the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.”

“All children in Iraq deserve to live their lives without the constant threat of violence exacerbated by the use of explosive weapons. UNICEF calls on all parties to fulfill their obligations to protect children at all times and without delay,” the statement added.

Culture ministry to launch interactive book fair

The Ministry of Culture will launch Thursday an interactive book fair across the Kingdom in conjunction with Jordan’s summer activities.

The book fair will kick off at seven in the evening today, under the patronage of the Minister of Culture Haifa Najjar, at the headquarters of the Arab Cultural Forum Zay in Balqa governorate and will be held every Thursday until August 25th.

According to a ministry statement, the book fair is part of a vision to launch a national strategy to encourage reading, in partnership with the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation and the public and private sectors and civil society institutions, and within the National Reading Program implemented by the ministry.

It aims at providing a suitable environment to encourage reading and introducing the vocabulary of the Jordanian culture in its various forms to the public in an interactive manner, in line with contemporary transformations and the needs of the Jordanian community.

House committee ckecks on al-Nasr refugee camp’s needs

Lower House Palestine Committee, during their visit on Thursday to Prince Hassan camp in Jabal al-Nasr in Amman, were briefed on the key demands and needs of the camp’s residents.

The committee will submit the camp residents’s demands to the prime minister and concerned authorities to work on addressing them, its head, MP Mohammad Zahrawi, said.

Zahrawi also pointed to the Royal benefactions to the camp’s residents in various fields and underlined His Majesty King Abdullah II’s efforts to restore momentum to the Palestinian cause in different international and regional forums.

Meanwhile, MPs Fayez Basbous and Dirar Harasis stressed the importance of the Hashemite custodianship in preserving Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem’s Al-Quds Al-Sharif.

For his part, the Deputy Director of UNRWA Affairs, Kunal Adar, lauded His Majesty King Abdullah II’s efforts to ask world countries to support UNRWA to carry out its duty to “the fullest” and provide its health and educational services to Palestinian refugees.

In addition, Director General of the Department of Palestinian Affairs (DPA), Rafiq Kharfan , said all demands and observations will be followed up with the concerned authorities to address them.

The camp’s services improvement committee reviewed the key demands, which are improving and rehabilitating the sewage network, and providing job opportunities for camp residents in development projects.

LTRA to support public transportation amid fuel prices hike

Director General of the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LTRA) Tariq Habashneh said Thursday that the authority will provide direct support to public transportation operators to alleviate the repercussions of a fuel prices hike.

In a press statement, Habashneh pointed out that a specialized committee has held several meetings with the relevant authorities on the financial support mechanism, adding that it will be provided after completing the necessary procedures.

Water theft on south Amman waterline detected-ministry

The Ministry of Water and Irrigation, in cooperation with the Public Security Directorate (PSD), carried out a campaign to end violations on water sources in southern Amman and remove illegal fixtures.

The ministry, in a statement on Thursday, said 5 violations on main waterlines that siphoned hundreds of cubic meters daily in a “flouting” manner, were ended in Amman’s Manga area.

The stolen water went to supply farms, homes, ponds and sale and affected quantities pumped to southern Amman regions, the statement added.

Based on the available information, a security campaign was coordinated this morning in the south Amman region and investigations ongoing to nab and refer culprits to the concerned juridical authorities, the ministry said.

Violations impacting water sources are a crime punishable by imprisonment for long periods and large fines, the ministry noted.

Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline re-operates

Russia has resumed on Thursday the operation of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, which runs to Germany, after being closed for annual maintenance work for 10 days, according to the pipeline operator.

The spokesperson of the Nord Stream company spoke to an international agency, which was quoted by Deutsche Welle (DW) as saying that the pipeline has resumed operations without revealing the amount of gas flowing through the pipeline.

Italy’s Prime Minister submits resignation

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi submitted his resignation on Thursday to President Sergio Mattarella, after three coalition parties withdrew their support for his government.

According to the Agence France-Presse (AFP), the president’s office announced in a statement that Draghi’s government has submitted its resignation and that the president has “taken note” of it, but has asked Draghi’s government to remain on in a caretaker capacity.

QAIA receives over 3.2mln passengers during H1 2022

The Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) welcomed 3,248,467 passengers (PAX) during the first half of 2022, according to the Airport International Group statistics.

The QAIA also registered 31,547 aircraft movements (ACM) and 29,148 tons of cargo – representing 17.0% and 40.5% declines, respectively, compared with H1 2019. Meanwhile, during the month of June, the QAIA handled 711,983 PAX, 6,211 ACM and 5,673 tons of cargo – marking decreases of 14.9%, 17.1% and 30.1%, respectively, as opposed to June 2019.

Overall traffic growth during the first six months of 2022 was driven by the resumption and introduction of airlines and routes to QAIA’s global networks, the statement said. These included the launch of regular flights from Amman to Washington DC via United Airlines, to Jeddah and Riyadh via flyadeal, to Alexandria via Alexandria Airlines and to Abu Dhabi via Wizz Air Abu Dhabi – in addition to the re-commencement of routes to Antalya, Copenhagen, Berlin, Zurich, Geneva, Rome, Montreal and Najaf via Royal Jordanian, as well as the opening of new routes to Toronto via Royal Jordanian and to Rome, Milan and Vienna via Wizz Air Hungary. Moreover, top destinations that contributed positively to recorded traffic figures included Istanbul, Jeddah, Kuwait, Dubai and Cairo.

“The promising results noted during the first half of the year have been a step forward for QAIA following the coronavirus crisis, with passenger numbers showing steady progress over recent months,” said Airport International Group CEO, Nicolas Claude. “Though we have not yet fully recovered, we look forward to witnessing what the remaining six months of 2022 will bring, as we stay committed to delivering a welcoming and memorable travel experience at Jordan’s prime gateway to the world,” he added.
