Aqaba Development Corporation unveils investment package

Aqaba Development Corporation CEO Hussein Safadi, on Tuesday announced a package of local and foreign investments in logistics, ports and industrial estates.

Safadi said in a meeting with local community representatives that the projects included setting up an industrial estate in Al-Quweira District on a plot of land of 1,800 dunums, which will be supplied with industrial gas through a partnership with the main developer, the Aqaba Industrial Estate.

All the designs are in place for a gas supply station in Al-Quwaira, the first of its kind in the Kingdom, which is served by gas to feed small- and medium-sized enterprises, he pointed out.

Safadi said an agreement had been signed with IBM Terminals to enhance Aqaba as a regional logistics hub, at a direct investment volume of $242 million, which qualifies the port city as a gateway for trade, maritime shipping and alternative energy.

Also under the agreement, he said, a marine training college will be established through the global logistics company Maersk to qualify Jordanian youth for jobs in regional and international ports, and it will be the first of its kind in the region, which promotes Aqaba as a regional educational and commercial hub.

The first medical university in Aqaba will open early next year as well as founding an affiliated educational medical hospital, he said.

Safadi also noted that a fishermen port has been established along the central shore up to the old town, with developed anchorages, serviced markets and fishing facilities that became a landmark in the Red Sea city.

Jordan signs $125mln grant to support agriculture; combat climate change

Jordan and the World Bank Tuesday signed the Loan Agreement for the Agriculture Resilience, Value Chain Development and Innovation (ARDI or “My Land”) Programme for Results on the sidelines of the World Bank Annual Meetings.

The US$125 Million Programme, approved by the Bank on September 29, aims to strengthen the development of Jordan’s agriculture sector by enhancing its climate resilience, increasing competitiveness and inclusion and ensuring medium- to long-term food security in line with Jordan’s National Sustainable Agriculture Plan and Vision for Economic Modernisation.

From 2022 to 2027, the programme will provide some 30,000 farming households with financing to adopt climate-smart and water-efficient agriculture practices, provide needs-based training, and generate about 12,000 job opportunities, focusing on Jordanian women and youth, the statement added. The programme will create economic opportunities for Syrian refugees.

Agriculture accounts for approximately 20% of merchandise exports, yet only about half of the export potential for fruits and vegetables was achieved.

Climate change significantly worsens water scarcity and increases drought risks, affecting agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods.

A set of structural factors, such as the loss of key transport routes through Syria and lack of investment in supply chain infrastructure led to declines in competitiveness in local markets and exports.

Jordan’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nasser Shraideh said, “The ARDI programme supports key pillars of the National Sustainable Agriculture Plan and Jordan’s Economic Vision 2033. It combines policy reform with significant investments on the ground and highlights Jordan’s commitment to creating the enabling environment to transform the agriculture sector and realise its full growth potential.

“The program further supports achieving a set of cornerstone results, under the National Plan for Sustainable Agriculture umbrella, to establish an adequate enabling policy and investment environment for private sector-led growth in the agriculture sector.”

The ARDI programme is aimed at addressing critical challenges facing the sector along two pillars: “Climate Resilience and Sustainability” and “Competitiveness and Exports.”

“Investing in agricultural production and value chains can help serve a growing local market and contribute to food security,” said Jean-Christophe Carret, Mashreq Regional Director, World Bank.

Carret added, “The ARDI Programme will invest in building the skills and knowledge of women, youth and refugees to increase their employability and support the transition to formal employment.”

The Ministry of Agriculture, the National Agriculture Research Centre and the Agriculture Credit Corporation will implement the programme under a whole-of-government approach, involving other relevant line ministries and agencies.

The ARDI Programme is financed through a US$95.6 million contribution from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), a US$23.9 million grant from the Global Concessional Financing Facility (GCFF) and a US$5.5 million grant from the Partnership for Improving Prospects for Forcibly Displaced Persons and Host Communities (PROSPECTS), supported by the Netherlands.

Jordanian-Spanish ties ‘solid, historical,’ says envoy

Spanish Ambassador in Amman Miguel de Lucas on Tuesday described his country’s ties with Jordan as “historical and solid” and backed by the close relations of the two countries’ royal families.

In an interview with Petra on the occasion of the National Day of Spain, which falls on October 12, Lucas underscored that Jordan and Spain see eye-to-eye on all regional and global political issues, pointing to the expansion of ties in recent years into fields such as defense and security, development aid, and cultural cooperation thanks to a consistent exchange of visits.

On October 1st, 2020, a new phase of Jordanian-Spanish cooperation started after the signing of the first partnership agreement, which lays out the basics, priorities, collaborations, resources, and tools to implement Spanish-Jordanian cooperation programs for the 2022-2024 period, said the envoy.

Priorities stated in the partnership agreement, he continued, help maintain programs and sectors determined in an action plan put in place in recent years, which is concerned with structural reform in social protection, health, water, and sewage sectors.

From 2017 to 2021, development aid offered by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation totaled 26 million euros, in addition to another equal contribution from the Spanish General State Budget and the European Union’s funds, said Lucas.

He emphasized that Jordan and Spain agree on the need to fight extremism affecting coexistence in societies, describing terrorism as “one of the most brutal forms of extremism.” The envoy underscored focusing on education to spread dialogue and moderate values, which, in turn, help prevent the spread of terrorism.

Going over economic cooperation, he said Spain’s imports from Jordan in 2022’s January-July period amounted to USD62 million, up a whopping 74 percent compared to the same period of 2021, while exports to Jordan totaled USD233 million with an annual increase of 34 percent.

Spanish imports from Jordan, he added, mainly were of fertilizers, non-organic chemicals, and aluminum, while exports to Jordan included ceramics, tiles, panels, sheep, goats, oils, perfumes, seeds, and electrical appliances, noting that trade ties are growing at a “good pace.”

He also went over the number of Spanish tourists coming to Jordan in 2021, which hit 7,000, down 82 percent from the 41,800 recorded in 2019. In 2022’s first six months, he said Jordan welcomed 13,000 Spanish tourists, which is less than the pre-pandemic figures, adding that “our goal is to reach and even exceed pre-pandemic numbers.”
