Italy: Algerian gas supplies will replace Russia’s

The CEO of the Italian energy group Eni, Claudio Descalzi, Tuesday said that gas supplies from Algeria would “almost” replace gas supplies from Russia, which two years ago constituted more than 40 per cent of the country’s demand.

According to Aki news agency, Descalzi explained that Algerian gas imports “will reach 38 per cent next year, instead of 12 per cent previously,” noting that the 27 billion cubic meters of Algerian gas are roughly equivalent to Russia’s supplies, which were in the range of 28-29 billion cubic meters.

Hardline Jewish settlers storm Al-Aqsa Mosque under heavy police escort

Hundreds of Israeli police escorted large groups of extremist settlers observing Jewish holidays as they breached the Al-Aqsa Mosque / Haram Al Sharif compound in occupied Jerusalem.

The Jerusalem Waqf (religious endowments) Department administering the compound said in a statement that police forces broke into the Qibli Mosque and ordered Muslim worshippers out as settlers streamed into the complex, one of Islam’s holiest shrines. Police also set up checkpoints on the gates of the compound in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The occupation authorities use Jewish holidays as an excuse to carry out repressive security measures against the Palestinians.

Jordan condemns Israeli violations against al-Aqsa Mosque

Jordan on Tuesday slammed ultraorthodox Israeli settlers’ continued violations in the al-Aqsa Mosque/ al-Haram al-Sharif and breaches on the holy compound under Israeli police protection.

Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Sinan Majali said the Israeli actions and escalations against the mosque and other provocative practices in the compound as well as the restrictions placed on worshippers are “rejected and condemned, and represent a flagrant violation of the historical and legal status quo and international law.”

Majali indicated that the continuous violations and attacks on holy sites and the Israeli raids into the occupied Palestinian territories may lead to further escalations.

He stressed that the holy compound, with its entire area of 144 dunums, is a place of worship purely for Muslims, and that the Jerusalem and al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department is the body that has the exclusive jurisdiction to manage all the affairs of the compound and organize entry to it.

He also called on Israel, as the occupying power, to immediately halt all actions that aim to change the legal and historical status quo and impose spatial or temporal divisions.

Parliamentary committee condemns Israeli provocations at Al Aqsa Mosque

The Lower House’s Foreign Affairs Committee said Tuesday that escalating provocations by the Israeli occupation authority at the Al Aqsa Mosque, including restrictions on the entry of Muslim worshippers, is a flagrant violation of the international law and the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its sanctities.

In a press release, head of the committee, MP Khaldoun Heina, denounced the actions perpetrated by Jewish extremists, including raids into the holy compound as well as violations against Muslim cemeteries, under the protection of Israeli police.

He warned that ongoing attacks against the holy sites and raids across the occupied Palestinian territories would lead to further escalation.

The MP made it clear that Al Aqsa Mosque/ Haram Al Sharif, with its entire area of 144 dunums, is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims, calling on Israel, the occupying power, to cease all measures aimed at changing the existing historical and legal status quo and imposing a temporal and spatial division of the holy shrine.

2 witnesses in the Jabal Luweibdeh building collapse case testify remotely

The Amman Magistrates Court on Tuesday heard via video link the testimonies of two survivors of the deadly collapse of a building in the Amman neighborhood of Jabal Luweibdeh, who remained hospitalized for injuries sustained in last month’s incident.

In its sixth open session in the case, presiding judge Sharaf Abu Latifeh decided to remand the three defendants in custody until Thursday, as the trial was adjourned to check the 31 public prosecution evidences, including those of 18 plaintiffs and 7 experts as well as 3 other reports.

The first witness, a 54-year-old woman, told the court she lived in the third floor of the building and was with her husband and son praying at about 04:00 pm when they heard an explosion and the roof of the building fell on her chest. She said she was rescued by the civil defense, but her son died.

She said no one checked on the condition of the old building during her 4-year residency, which prompted her to file a law suit.

The other survivor said he was washing for prayer when he heard an explosion and thought it was an earthquake, and the walls and ceiling crumbled, trapping him, but he could only move his right hand, and was reached eight hours later by civil defense rescue teams, who found he had fractures in his hand and fingers.

He said he was in the house with his wife and family members, who all survived, but his son died.

The court began the hearings on September 25, where Public Prosecution witnesses gave testimonies, and the defendants pleaded not guilty on the charges, including causing death, 14 times, and causing harm, 9 times.
