The European Union struck a deal on a law to effectively ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035, aiming to speed up the switch to electric vehicles and combat climate change.

Negotiators from the EU countries and the European Parliament, who must both approve new EU laws, as well as the European Commission, which drafts new laws, agreed that carmakers must achieve a 100 percent cut in CO2 emissions by 2035, which would make it impossible to sell new fossil fuel-powered vehicles in the 27-country bloc.

Foreign ministry: Qatari compensations for Jordanian military retirees at FIFA World Cup

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said that Qatar decided to provide compensations to military retirees who had joined for a short period to work in the field of providing security and protection services related to the arrangements for the FIFA World Cup, according to individual agreements with a private company, and their return to the Kingdom.

The ministry spokesperson Sinan Al Majali said that the decision was reached by a number of retirees who attended a meeting in the embassy building on behalf of the retirees with Jordanian Ambassador Zaid Mufleh Al-Lawzi that lasted for hours, and a number of the Jordanian community in Qatar attended part of it.

The Qatari government decided to pay $1,500 to the retirees and book tickets to them; in addition to the amount they received from the private company according to their contract with it, as a contribution from the Qatari government to solve the issue.

About 6000 Jordanian retirees had individually contracted with a private company to work for a limited period in the field of providing security and protection, ending after the conclusion of the World Cup period.

Al Majali said that the ministry, through the Jordanian Embassy in Qatar, has been coordinating with the relevant authorities to investigate whether contractual obligations were violated by the private security company, to ensure that the appropriate measures are taken in accordance with the law.

“Qatar’s hosting of the FIFA World Cup 2022 is an achievement for all Arabs,” the spokesperson said, expressing the Kingdom’s keenness to make the tournament successful.

Voicing pride in the military retirees, Al Majali expressed confidence in the Jordanians’ ability to address the issue in accordance and respectful of Qatari law.
