Iraq key economic partner of Jordan, says official

Iraq is an important and key economic partner of Jordan with joint large-scale projects, including the joint industrial zone and the oil pipeline, said President of the Jordan and Amman Chambers of Industry Fathi Jaghbir.

In a statement on Monday, Jaghbir called for further development of economic relations between Jordan and Iraq over the coming period, after the Iraqi Prime Minister and an accompanying delegation visited the Kingdom earlier today, voicing hope that the visit increases Jordanian exports to Iraq.

Trade exchange between Jordan and Iraq reached JD471 million last year, as Jordanian exports amounted to about JD412 million, compared to JD59 million in imports from Iraq, he added, pointing to the joint industrial zone, which, he described, as a positive and effective step towards strengthening economic relations, and an opportunity to leverage the exemptions and advantages of free trade agreements between the two countries.

He stated that there are many opportunities for cooperation between the private sectors in the two countries, pointing out the advantages and expertise available on both sides, which would achieve industrial integration.

Palestinian killed, 4 injured by Israeli army

Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man and wounded four others during a dawn raid on Monday into Jenin in the north of the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

It said Israeli troops surrounded a house in Jenin and arrested a wanted young man, adding that the raid sparked protests in which soldiers used live rounds and tear gas injuring four people, including one who was seriously injured in the abdomen and later died in hospital.

Similar clashes also erupted in the center of the city of Hebron in the southern West Bank, where dozens of Palestinians were treated for inhaling tear gas fired by troops.

The occupation army also carried out raids into across West Bank towns and East Jerusalem and arrested 15 Palestinians on charges of resisting soldiers and Jewish settlers.

Jordan, Kazakhstan enjoy special ties, says official

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Roman Vassilenko, on Monday said that Jordan is one of the most promising partners of his country in the Arab world.

“From the first day of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Jordan and Kazakhstan, we have been united by the closeness of positions on major global and regional issues,” he told the Jordan News Agency.

The Kazakh official added that both countries are effectively interacting on multilateral platforms, including the UN, OIC, and CICA, to coordinate their actions to resolve pressing international problems.

“The Kazakh-Jordanian relations are developing dynamically, as two visits of the Head of Kazakhstan to Jordan took place. In turn, King Abdullah II also visited Kazakhstan seven times. The last time the leaders of the two countries met was on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2022 in New York,” he added.

Vassilenko hailed Jordan’s participation in the work of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, as well as support for all international efforts aimed at resolving the Syrian crisis, just like his country.

“We know that Jordan, as a neighboring country to Syria, is experiencing the negative socio-economic and other consequences of this crisis due to the influx of Syrian refugees. In this context, Kazakhstan also provides assistance to Syrian refugees in Jordan. Namely, we provided humanitarian assistance to the UNHCR Office for Syrians living in the Zaatari camp. Moreover, we appreciate the role of Amman, who actively participates as an observer in the Astana process and makes a significant contribution to the settlement of the conflict in Syria,” he noted.

On the economic level, the official said that Kazakhstan is interested in expanding investment, trade, and economic cooperation with Jordan. However, he added, the current volume of trade is at a low level (3 million dollars in January – August 2022).

“The main obstacle is the lack of fast and inexpensive logistics routes between our countries. We consider it necessary to work out specific mechanisms for the delivery of goods from the two countries with the involvement of large logistics companies from Kazakhstan and Jordan,” he said, stressing the need to take active measures to build effective trade corridors.

Vassilenko highlighted the importance of the upcoming 5th meeting of the intergovernmental commission in Amman in 2023, which will have a positive impact on expanding trade, economic, and investment cooperation between the two countries. He also indicated that the establishment of direct contacts between business circles will contribute to the discovery of wide opportunities for mutual cooperation in various fields.

Logistics Association: Global shipping rates stabilize in past 2 months

Global freight rates have been trending downward over the past two months as global trade slows down, said the president of the Jordanian Logistics Association, Nabil AlKhatib.

AlKhatib stated in an interview with the Jordan News Agency on Monday that shipping costs continued to decline due to a drop in global demand and relatively stable crude oil prices, indicating that the shipping costs of containers coming from Europe and the United States have largely remained unchanged while those from China continue to fluctuate.

In November, the cost to ship a 20-foot container to the port of Aqaba from Jeddah was $700 and from Montreal, $3,200, while a 40-foot container cost $800 from Jeddah and $3,900 from Houston.

According to AlKhatib, shipping a 20-foot container and a 40-foot container from China to Jordan costs $2,500 and $3,000, respectively.

UNICEF celebrates inclusion, child rights on World Children’s Day

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) in Jordan is celebrating World Children’s Day – UNICEF’s annual day in support of the realization of children’s rights – with a special focus this year on inclusion for every child.

In a statement on Monday, UNICEF said that World Children’s Day, which marks the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) by the UN General Assembly on 20 November 1989, is a day of action for children by children.

Children in UNICEF-supported Makani centers will be taking part in theater and musical activities focused on child rights, while a football match organized together with Special Olympics Jordan will highlight the power of sport to drive inclusion.

“Every child has the right to an equal start in life, to be included and to be protected,” said Samuel Kipngetich Too, Acting Representative, UNICEF Jordan. “This year World Children’s Day is particularly momentous coming after the adoption of the Child Rights Law, a historic achievement from the Government of Jordan and the National Council of Family Affairs, to help improve children’s wellbeing and development.”

“The year 2022 is a special year for children of Jordan with the adoption of the Child Rights Law, allowing Jordan to enter its second centenary, realizing the importance of investing in childhood, and realizing the law’s compatibility with the Economic Modernization Vision, including the law’s emphasis on educational reform as a basis for economic development”, said Mohammad Miqdadi, the Secretary-General of the National Council of Family Affairs.

The Child Rights Law aligns with Jordan’s adoption of the CRC over three decades ago, Jordan’s Vision 2025 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – as well as Jordan’s position as a pathfinder country to end all forms of violence against children in line with the CRC.

UNICEF will continue to work with the Government of Jordan and all national institutions to ensure that all girls and boys in Jordan have full access to their rights and that their voices are heard and acted on, leaving no one behind.
