Jordan, Turkiye talk military cooperation

Amman, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Major General Yusef Huneiti Thursday in Amman and Turkish Ambassador to Jordan Erdem Ozan on military cooperation.

During the meeting, Huneiti and Ozan discussed cooperation and coordination in military, operational, training and logistical areas.

Jordan, Italy talk defence, military cooperation

Amman, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Major General Yousef Huneiti and his Italian counterpart Thursday held talks in Amman on military cooperation.

Huneiti discussed with the Italian Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragonewith, and an accompanying delegation the future of military cooperation and regional and international developments.

“The Jordanian-Italian relations constitute a model to be followed in facing various challenges and difficulties. Cooperation continues with the Italian Armed Forces in all military fields by employing mutual expertise and capabilities,” Huneiti said.

In turn, Dragonewith noted the depth of relations between Jordan and Italy, praising Jordan’s “pivotal” role in combating terrorism and extremism and consolidating regional security and stability.

King meets US Senate leadership

Washington, His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday evening met with the Senate majority and minority leaders, according to a royal court statement.

The meeting, attended by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, covered the deeply-rooted strategic partnership between the two countries, and means of bolstering cooperation, with King Abdullah expressing appreciation of the United States’ support for Jordan in various fields.

Discussing regional developments, the two sides highlighted the important role of the United States, in partnership with Jordan, in promoting stability, stressing the need to step up efforts to de-escalate and promote calm in the Palestinian Territories.

His Majesty reaffirmed the centrality of the Palestinian cause, calling for stepping up efforts to create a political horizon for relaunching the peace process, on the basis of the two-state solution.

In addition, the King highlighted the important role of regional economic integration projects in promoting stability and development in the region.

For their part, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and members of the Senate leadership expressed pride in the deep-rooted relations between the two countries, highlighting Jordan as a key partner in the Middle East, and commending the Kingdom’s role in promoting peace and stability.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan, and Jordan’s Ambassador in Washington, DC, Dina Kawar attended the meetings.

Jordan condemns demolition of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem

Amman, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned Israeli occupation authorities’ demolition of a number of Palestinian homes in occupied East Jerusalem and displacement of their residents.

In a statement on Thursday, the ministry warned against expelling Palestinians in Khan al-Ahmar area, as displacement of residents from their homes is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and relevant international legitimacy resolutions.

Also, the ministry condemned the ongoing attacks targeting the Christian presence in Jerusalem, the latest was the attack today on “Prison of Christ” church in Jerusalem’s Old City.

In addition, the ministry stressed the need to stop all unilateral measures that undermine the two-state solution and perpetuate Israel’s occupation.

The ministry said stopping violence requires halting the dangerous deterioration in Palestinian territories that perpetuates despair and fuels extremism by joining efforts to restore confidence in a feasible peace process.

This bid comes by resuming “serious and effective” negotiations to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution to help all parties enjoy security and peace, in a manner that embodies the independent and sovereign Palestinian state on June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, the ministry pointed out.

Netherlands ambassador for youth visits Salt agricultural employment programme

Salt, The Netherlands Ambassador for Youth, Education and Work, Jurriaan Middelhoff, Thursday, visited a training for the agricultural training programme within the project to support qualified and skilled workers in agriculture and tourism.

The project aims to provide 1,500 men and women with employment and entrepreneurship skills in tourism and agriculture.

“The Netherlands places youth at the centre of development cooperation policies and invests in their education and work to prepare them for the business world better now and tomorrow, ” Middelhoff noted.

The Netherlands-funded “Your Skill” project, launched in 2022, is in line with the Skills for Jobs Pact of the Embassy of the Netherlands and with Jordan’s National Youth and Employment Policy.

Walid Tarawneh, CEO of “Partners for the Best,” implementing the “Your Skill” project, said, “Your Skill is not limited to raising the skills of young men and women and enhancing their employment opportunities.”

He added that the project aims to develop the youth’s entrepreneurial and life skills in two of Jordan’s most vital sectors, tourism and agriculture.

Queen Rania meets with U.S. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden in Washington

Washington, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah met with U.S. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden at the White House on Wednesday, while accompanying His Majesty King Abdullah II and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II on a working visit to Washington, D.C.

The meeting was the second to take place between the First Ladies since U.S. President Joe Biden took office. During their meeting, Queen Rania and Dr. Biden discussed various issues of mutual interest.

Israeli warplanes shell several sites in Gaza

Gaza, Israeli warplanes early Thursday bombed a number of Palestinian targets in the Gaza Strip, causing heavy property damage, but no casualties were reported, according to Palestinian sources.

“Israeli jets fired a number of missiles against a Palestinian resistance post and an agricultural land east of Al-Maghazi in the central parts of the coastal enclave,” the sources said.

The occupation warplanes also shelled another resistance post southwest of Gaza City, the sources added.

Shboul, Kampmann take part in workshop on Germany’s media experience

Amman, Minister of Government Communication, Faisal Shboul, and German Ambassador to Jordan, Bernhard Kampmann, on Thursday participated in a panel discussion on the German media expertise.

The workshop seeks to follow-up on a recent visit by a Jordanian media delegation to Germany, aimed to learn about German media legislation, regulations and laws governing related activities and its expertise in dealing with the various media, audio-visual and print, and social platforms.

Speaking at the event, Shboul referred to the Jordanian-German cooperation relations in various fields, including the media area through training and exchange of media visits.

Shboul, who is also the government’s official spokesperson, lauded German model in dealing with various media outlets and regulating work of social platforms.

Jordan, as part of its efforts to provide information to various media outlets, has trained 24 media spokespeople in ministries and looks forward in the next stage to training 75 others in other public institutions, Shboul said.

For his part, Kampmann said media plays an “important” role in stimulating public debate and shaping political will, stressing readiness to cooperate with Jordan to address the challenges facing media globally.

The two-day workshop, which saw participation of a number of experts, discusses media sustainability strategies, impact of licensing fees on digital media pluralism, ways to counter hate speech and misinformation on the Internet, curricula development to teach professional media, and trends in regulating digital media in Europe.

Hashemite University advances 91 places in 2023 Webometrics ranking

Zarqa, The Hashemite University (HU) advanced 91 places in 2023 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities and moved from 1,370 to 1,279 ranking among about 12,000 international universities and academic institutions, according to its statement on Thursday.

The statement noted the HU also ranked 26th at the Arab level among about 1,400 universities and higher education institutions and maintained its local 3rd ranking.

Commenting on the achievement, HU President, Fawaz Zboun, said the university has implemented a slew of measures and policies to support and stimulate “distinguished” researchers, which contributed to achieving a “qualitative” addition in the number of research papers published in prestigious scientific journals.

The HU’s efforts also extended to cooperation with prestigious universities and international institutions in supported research projects, which improved the university’s progress in global rankings, he pointed out.

Bank of England raises interest rates by 0.5 percentage points

London, The Bank of England Thursday raised interest rates again as part of its continued efforts to stem inflation.

The Bank announced that it would raise the interest rate again by 0.5 per cent to 4 per cent.

The interest rate rise would be the tenth time the British Central Bank has raised the interest rate since the end of 2021.
