EBRD provides pound 30-million grant to construct wastewater treatment facility in Al Ghabawi

The Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation announced Tuesday an additional a pound 30-million grant from the European Union (EU) through the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), to finance the construction of a greenfield wastewater treatment facility in Al Ghabawi on the outskirts of the capital, Amman. Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Zeina Toukan, said that the total financing for the project amounts to pound 71.3 million, funded by the aforementioned grant, and a pound 41.3-million soft loan provided by the EBRD. Toukan added that the funding will contribute to the construction of a modern wastewater treatment plant in the Al-Ghabawi area, in order to improve the level of services provided to citizens, and develop the water and sanitation system, in line with government priorities within the Executive Program 2023-2025 to the economic modernization vision. The project will contribute to raise the efficiency of the wastewater treatment system in Jordan, address environmental risks and any health damage in the surrounding area, and rehabilitate capacities in refugee hosting areas. The agreement was signed in the presence of EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Zeina Toukan, Minister of Water and Irrigation, Mohamed Al Najjar and EU Ambassador to Jordan, Maria Hadjitheodosiou. Minister Toukan said: “I would like to sincerely thank the EBRD for the concessional support extended to this priority project. I would also like to thank the EU for offering this significant grant of pound 30 million, which provides a more flexible and speedy response to the urgent needs to support investment projects. Indeed, EBRD in Jordan has been a true success story, which translated into concrete projects on the ground supporting key sectors and areas in Jordan.” In turn, Minister of Water and Irrigation, Muhammad Najjar, said that the Water Authority / Ministry of Water and Irrigation will establish a wastewater purification plant transported by tankers in the Al Ghabawi area, 20 km east of the capital, Amman, with an estimated capacity of 24,750 cubic meters per day, by which the station would receive waste water tanks instead of the primary treatment plant in Ain Ghazal area. President Renaud-Basso said: “We are very proud to support the government of Jordan in improving and increasing the capacity of Jordan’s wastewater services through the construction of the Al Ghabawi septic tank facility. This investment will not only provide better services for households not connected to the main system, but it will also support the country’s resilience to the refugee crisis through additional infrastructure capacity while mitigating environmental harm in the surrounding communities.” European Union Ambassador to Jordan, Maria Hadjitheodosiou said: “The Al-Ghabawi wastewater project is not only a wastewater treatment facility; it will set an example on resources’ efficiency and combine the possibility to exploit sludge further in waste-to-energy, as well as the possibility for contributing to composting Such projects contribute to the improvement of the lives of people living in these communities, and offer opportunities for training and employment, in addition to contributing to Jordan’s efforts for meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in climate change action.”

PM, EBRD president talk partnership

Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh Tuesday met with President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Odile Renaud-Basso and an accompanying delegation. During the meeting, the Prime Minister lauded the bank’s support in a number of sectors, announcing the signing of a 30-million-euro grant agreement with the bank at the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation today for the construction of a water treatment plant in the al-Ghabawi area. He underscored the partnership between Jordan and the EBRD, pointing out that the bank is one of the most important partners and supporters of Jordan’s public and private sectors. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of Renaud-Basso’s visit to enhance cooperation and to look firsthand at the investment environment in the Kingdom, expressing hope for further investments in many vital areas. Khasawneh pointed to plans to pass a law for partnership between the public and private sectors to overcome the obstacles that result from the current law to the implementation of many development and service projects. For her part, Renaud-Basso indicated that the bank is looking forward to expanding its operations and investments in the Kingdom, stressing the bank’s interest in many projects that Jordan intends to implement, especially in areas of energy, water, clean energy, and green economy.

FM, Lebanese counterpart talk ties, region

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi discussed with his Lebanese counterpart Abdallah Bou Habib Jordanian-Lebanese relations and regional and international issues of common interest. During a meeting at the Foreign Ministry in Amman, the ministers reaffirmed a common interest to build on the “historical” relations between the two countries and increase bilateral cooperation. In a joint press conference, Safadi emphasized the strategic and historic relations with Lebanon, referring to decades of cooperation and joint action to serve the interests of the two “brotherly” countries and Arab interests and issues. Safadi said Jordan will continue to firmly stand by Lebanon to overcome the crisis it is facing and restore its security and status within the Arab region. However, he added, reform must come from within Lebanon, voicing Jordan’s confidence that the “Lebanese brothers will overcome the challenges and reach the necessary consensus to reinvigorate national institutions to serve the country’s interests and its people.” Safadi told reporters his talks with Bou Habib tackled economic cooperation, including supplying Lebanon with electricity via Syria after Lebanon finalizes an agreement with the World Bank, which will finance the electrical interconnection project. On the Syrian refugees, Safadi said that providing a decent life for refugees is not only the responsibility of host countries, but a common responsibility by the international community. “We will continue to do whatever we can to provide a decent life for the refugees until the conditions come to allow them to return voluntarily to their country.., which we hope will restore its security, stability and regional role,” he pledged. Safadi said Jordan is working with the international community to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis, through the Jordanian Initiative, based on an Arab role to engages directly with the Syrian government on reciprocal basis, to reach a gradual solution that ends the crisis and addresses all its political, humanitarian and security ramifications. He said Jordan and Lebanon, both neighboring countries of Syria, want to see an end to this catastrophic crisis for which the Syrian people have paid a heavy price and the entire region bore its adverse repercussions. Safadi also said he and the Lebanese minister discussed the Palestinian issue and efforts exerted to stop the deterioration in the occupied Palestinian territories and confront extremist agendas that are in violation of Palestinian people’s rights and that try to block them from achieving their full political rights, especially setting up an independent, sovereign state with occupied Jerusalem as its capital on the lines of June 4. 1967 and on the basis of the two-state solution. He reiterated Jordan’s unwavering support of the Palestinian people and their rights, and said the Kingdom continued coordination at the regional and international levels to stop the ongoing Israeli violations against them and stop attempts to change the historical and legal status quo at the Islamic and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem. For his part, Bou Habib thanked Jordan’s support of Lebanon, including aid after the massive explosion at Beirut Port in August 2020. He said Lebanon also backed Jordan’s position towards the recent events and condemns the recent escalation by the Israeli occupation authorities in occupied Palestine, specifically in the city of Jerusalem, reiterating support for the Hashemite Custodianship over the Christian and Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem.

Jordan, France talk investment cooperation

Minister of Investment Kholoud Saqqaf and newly-appointed French Ambassador Alexis Grandmaison discussed strengthening investment and development cooperation between Jordan and France during the coming period. According to a statement issued by the ministry on Tuesday, the meeting shed light on French investments in the Kingdom and tackled means to expand them. Saqqaf stressed the deep-rooted Jordanian-French relations, representing a solid foundation for a kickstart towards broader horizons in development, particularly in investment. She pointed out “great investment opportunities in Jordan for French investors,” expressing her aspiration to further increase French investments in Jordan during the coming period. French investments in Jordan amount to approximately $1.7 billion, mainly in sectors of telecommunications, energy, logistics, and trade.

Shop price inflation in UK hits record high

Retail prices in British stores hit another record high in March, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC). It said on Tuesday that overall shop price inflation rose to 8.9 percent in March from 8.4 percent in February, the largest increase since the BRC records started in 2005. The BRC said the annual increase is mainly due to a 15.0 percent rise in food commodity prices and a 5.9 percent rise in the prices of non-food items.

Unified ticket sales at JD4.3mln in 2 months

Sales of the unified ticket electronic system topped JD4.374 million during January-February of 2023, up from JD2.706 million in 2019, which is tourism’s “golden year”, according to the Ministry of Tourism. A statement on Tuesday said some 60,000 tickets were sold during January-February, compared to 37,235 tickets sold in the same period of 2019. A JD70 ($99) ticket allows for visiting over 40 tourist and archaeological sites and exempts tourist groups and people of all nationalities from entry visa fees, provided that the ticket is purchased before entering the Kingdom. Launched in late 2015, the ticket system contributed to an increase in the number of tourists to the Kingdom, prolonged their stay and motivated them to visit many archaeological sites, which increased the Kingdom’s income from the sector, the statement added.
