Amman: In a pioneering move to promote circular economy practices and sustainability within Jordan's industrial sector, the Amman Chamber of Industry (ACI) on Sunday launched the country's first digital platform for industrial waste exchange. The platform, developed with support from the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) through the "Green Activities in Industrial Facilities" project and funded by Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, aims to transform environmental challenges into real economic opportunities.
According to Jordan News Agency, Fathi Jaghbir, president of both the Jordan and Amman Chambers of Industry, said the platform encourages the reuse of industrial by-products by enabling factories to list non-hazardous waste materials as potential raw materials for other industries. The initiative is expected to reduce waste, cut costs, and foster stronger inter-industry collaboration.
Secretary-General of the Ministry of Environment, Jihad Al-Sawair, praised the initiative, stating that the transition toward a green and circular economy is now a strategic imperative for Jordan. He stressed that this transformation relies on a sustainable partnership and mutual trust between the public and industrial sectors.
"This platform reflects a shift in perspective waste is no longer valueless but a reusable resource," Al-Sawair added, expressing hope that similar initiatives will scale up and help position Jordan's industrial sector as a leader in the green transition.
Simon Floth, director of the Green Activities project in Jordan, reaffirmed GIZ's commitment to supporting initiatives that promote sustainable industry and green economy principles across the kingdom.
Dr. Ala'aldeen Al-Halhouli, president of the German Jordanian University, also shared details of the university's ongoing efforts and academic programs that contribute to green transformation.
Project Director Roz Smadi delivered a detailed presentation on how the platform operates, while Jamal Al-Baradei, head of the Plastic Waste Recycling Association, highlighted the association's role in supporting recycling initiatives.
The new platform allows industrial facilities to list non-hazardous waste generated during production processes, making it available for exchange with other factories that can repurpose it as input materials. This approach not only reduces disposal costs and raw material expenses but also supports environmental protection and sparks innovation in recycling and reuse.
