Amman:Al-Balqa Applied University has been ranked first among Jordanian universities and 43rd globally in the UI GreenMetric 2026 ranking for sustainable universities. This ranking included 2,016 universities and educational institutions from 110 countries.
According to Jordan News Agency, the university's achievement reflects its ongoing efforts to enhance its campus environment and resource management while expanding sustainable practices. This participation over recent years involves the concerted efforts of its colleges, administrative units, and centers.
UI GreenMetric assesses sustainability performance in higher education institutions, promoting improvements in campus practices and knowledge sharing. This year's methodology expanded to include governance and digitalization, alongside infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water, transportation, education and research.
University President Ahmad Fakhri Al-Ajlouni highlighted that the ranking is a testament to the institution's sustainability projects and international recognition of Jordanian higher education through clear planning and sustained efforts. The university incorporates sustainability into its mission, impacting educational environments and local community engagement.
Al-Ajlouni emphasized future plans to increase student and researcher participation in sustainability projects, support environmental research, and expand cooperation with national and international institutions. The goal is to model a university that connects applied education with responsible resource use, supporting national clean energy and sustainable development efforts.
Vice President for Planning and Quality Assurance Haitham Al-Shibli noted that the university's ranking resulted from collaborative work on campus environment enhancements and resource management. The UI GreenMetric results are used to assess performance, guide improvements, and integrate governance and digitalization to support sustainability initiatives.
