Amman: Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) will focus on environmental awareness and sustainable visitor management after Aqaba Marine Reserve (AMR) was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, ASEZA Chairman Shadi Majali announced. During a recent press conference, Majali revealed that the current operational strategy for the AMR will remain unchanged as ASEZA prepares for an anticipated increase in tourist numbers.
According to Jordan News Agency, ASEZA is working on improving transit options and marketing approaches to effectively manage tourist flow and reduce pressure on the central beaches, all while maintaining the integrity of the AMR's sensitive marine ecosystem. Chairman Majali emphasized these efforts as part of the authority's commitment to preserving the area's natural resources.
AMR Director Naser Zawaydeh highlighted the significant role played by local divers and fishermen in conservation efforts. He mentioned that the reserve enforces a four-month fishing ban during breeding seasons to protect fish stocks, a practice aligned with global standards. Local fishermen who adhere to these regulations receive financial compensation, supporting their livelihoods while contributing to conservation goals.
Zawaydeh noted the success of these conservation measures, citing increased fish populations and the reappearance of rare marine species that had not been seen in the region for nearly thirty years. He also praised the active involvement of fishermen in marine conservation, including their efforts in rescuing sea turtles, dolphins, and other marine creatures, and reporting incidents requiring intervention.
To protect coral reef species and support local diving tourism, fishing is restricted within the reserve. Zawaydeh stated that alternative fishing areas have been designated outside the reserve boundaries to ensure a balance between economic needs and environmental preservation.
