Arab League Applauds UNRWA Mandate Extension

Amman: Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Saturday expressed approval of a UN General Assembly decision that extends the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) by three years.

According to Jordan News Agency, UNRWA plays a crucial role in supporting the livelihood and employment of millions of Palestinian refugees across its five areas of operation. Aboul Gheit highlighted the agency's significance, particularly in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, exacerbated by the Israeli conflict that has devastated the region's infrastructure and daily life.

The statement emphasized that UNRWA, equipped with substantial resources and a skilled workforce, is uniquely positioned to lead humanitarian relief and recovery efforts in Gaza. This is especially vital in the health and education sectors, which have been severely impacted by the conflict.

Jamal Rushdi, the official spokesman of the Arab League, conveyed that the Secretary-General urged donor nations to promptly address a $200 million funding shortfall. This financial support is essential for UNRWA to sustain its humanitarian operations in the affected regions.
