Amman: The Cabinet, in a session chaired by Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan, has approved several strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing agricultural exports, transforming the agri-food system, and improving governance in the sports sector. The decisions include the extension of support for agricultural exports, approval of a financing program for the agri-food system, and new regulations for the Jordan Olympic Committee.
According to Jordan News Agency, the Cabinet decided to extend its previous support for agricultural exports by covering 50% of air freight costs and 25% of maritime shipping costs for fresh vegetables and fruits. This initiative follows a successful study indicating a 38% increase in vegetable and fruit exports to non-traditional markets, despite a 42% decline in maritime exports compared to 2025. The number of non-traditional markets expanded from 12 in 2024 to 17 in 2025, thanks to reduced shipping costs and improved access.
In another significant move, the Cabinet approved the "Local Financing Solutions to Support the Transformation of the Agri-Food System in Jordan." This program, in collaboration with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Jordan, aligns with the Kingdom's Economic Modernization Vision. It aims to create a sustainable food system by supporting 100 sub-projects focused on climate-smart agriculture and establishing centers in Deir Alla and Mafraq with a capacity of 30,000 tons each.
Additionally, the Cabinet endorsed a regional project document titled "Food Coalition Transforming Agri-Food Systems to Become More Resilient to Shocks" in partnership with the Italian government and FAO. This project aims to reduce food loss and waste, enhance market networks, and improve the resilience of agri-food systems.
The Cabinet also approved the amended improvement plan for the Kingdom's performance in the Global Innovation Index, issued by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This approval is part of efforts to enhance innovation metrics and trends across 139 economies. Jordan improved its ranking from 73rd globally in 2024 to 65th in 2025.
In sports governance, the Cabinet approved the Jordan Olympic Committee Regulation for 2026 to enhance governance in the sports sector. The amendments align with updates to the Olympic Charter and regulate membership provisions, decision-making procedures, and the formation of independent sports arbitration bodies.
As part of social protection efforts, the Cabinet tasked the Ministry of Social Development with replacing 15,000 unsafe heaters for eligible families under the Safe Winter campaign. This decision is part of ongoing efforts to support families affected by weather conditions, with compensation already disbursed to over 120 families.
