Facilities opened in Balqa, Jerash under Royal Initiatives

Chief of the Royal Court Yousef Issawi, Head of the committee to follow up on the implementation of His Majesty King Abdullah’s Initiatives, Saturday inaugurated development projects in Baqa’a, Souf and Gaza refugee camps in the Balqa and Jerash governorates, which the King pledged during his previous field tours of the region and meetings with dignitaries and representatives of the camps.

The initiatives’ primary goal is to achieve sustainable social and economic development with a positive impact on targeted groups in urban, rural and Badia regions.

In Balqa, Issawi opened the civil society institutions building in Baqa’a camp, a 550-square metre, fully-furnished and equipped facility, where he removed the memorial plaque and toured its eight sections.

In Deir Alla district, he handed over to an impoverished family the keys of their new home, whose construction was ordered within the King’s vision to secure decent housing for low-income groups across the country.

In Jerash, the Royal Court Chief inaugurated the comprehensive development centre in Souf refugee camp, which was built and fully furnished according to the highest standards. He toured the premises, which include a hall, offices and stores with a total area of 1,300 square metres, in addition to a stadium.

In Gaza Camp, he toured a multi-purpose sports hall of the local club and other facilities, whose construction was part of efforts to empower the local youth to serve local communities and involve them in the development process, particularly in the sports and cultural fields.

Issawi also checked first-hand on the progress of work to establish a community rehabilitation centre for persons with disabilities in the camp.

Under Royal Initiatives, projects have been launched in the past years in all refugee camps with the aim of achieving development in the health, education, infrastructure, social care, economic and sports sectors, as well as empowerment of women and youth, rehabilitation of the disabled and recreational facilities.

The royal initiatives also include maintenance and rehabilitation of the homes of poverty-stricken families, facilities for civil society institutions and multi-purpose halls as well as supporting associations and local institutions.

Issawi told Petra in an interview that His Majesty constantly directs the implementation of service and development projects in the refugee camps along with government measures, the provision of high-quality basic services to improve the living conditions of the targeted groups and supporting sports and youth clubs and influential associations, which are “a key pillar of the development process”.

The royal directives, he pointed out, underline the importance of cooperation between all state institutions to ease the burdens and challenges facing local communities, noting ongoing coordination between the follow-up committee at the Royal Court and its partners and stakeholders to translate the royal directives into action.
