Russia reports 180,000 daily COVID-19 infections, 661 fatalities

More than 180,000 COVID-19 cases were recorded in Russia on Sunday, pushing the caseload to some 12.8 million, according to the countrey’s coronavirus response centre.

COVID-19 killed 661 Russians in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 335,414, it added.

More than 10.5 million people have recovered from the highly contagious respiratory disease so far, the center highlighted.

EU Madad-funded ‘Career Acceleration Project for Creative Designers’ project concluded

The American Center of Research (Acor) has concluded the third phase of “Career Acceleration Project for Creative Designers” project, carried out by a grant from the “Syrian Jordanian Education” (Madad) Program, funded by the European Union through the Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis “Madad.”

According to a statement on Sunday, the project adminstration said its activities, which were run by Netherlands Directorate-General for International Cooperation (DGIS), targeted young Syrian and Jordanian refugees, who benefit from charitable funds.

A total of 40 were selected out of 100 designers, from 800 applications submitted for participation in the project, the statement said.

The third phase’s 1st stage included a two-month training for participants on English language skills, aimed to acquire new skills in the English language to enter the business world, the statement noted.

As for the second stage, a web development course was offered, eyed to deal “professionally” in the labor market and involved in-person and remote activities, the statement added.

Marking their transition from the 3rd stage to the fourth, participants, whol hold architecture, graphic engineering, photography, arts and internal design university degrees, were sent to institutions and companies to acquire skills to work with clients in-person.

Queen Elizabeth marks 70 years on British throne

In a message marking the 70th anniversary of her reign, Queen Elizabeth II said it was her “sincere wish” that Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, should one day become “Consort Queen.”

A spokesperson on Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla said they were ‘honoured’ by the queen’s declaration.

UK reports 75 COVID fatalities

The UK health department Sunday reported 75 COVID-19 deaths, taking the death toll to 158,318.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said some 54,0100 Britons tested positive for the highly contagious lung disease, as the caseload tops 17.8 million.

Cabinet approves JCDC administrative organisation system

The Cabinet Sunday approved the Jordanian National Center for Epidemics and Communicable Diseases Control (JCDC) Administrative organisation system for 2022.

The new administrative organisation system is aimed at enabling the JCDC to carry out its mandate as it will allow for the creation of a new structure that would better link the Centre’s different units and departments.

The Cabinet agreed that the Ministry of Health (MoH) will start conducting tests and issuing the required medical certificates for non-Jordanian workers in factories and corporations located at development zones. This will give workers the opportunity to renew their work permits at their workplace.

The Cabinet also agreed on the recommendations of settlement and reconciliation commission to come to an agreement with 30 tax payers who are indebted to the Income and Sales Tax Department.

King meets with economists, says national workshops should lead to comprehensive economic roadmap

His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday reiterated that improving the economic outlook, and developing projects and ideas that accelerate growth and create jobs are priorities over the coming period.

During a telepresence meeting with a number of economic figures, attended by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, King Abdullah said the desired outcome of the upcoming national workshops is a comprehensive roadmap for the economy for the coming years.

His Majesty noted that the roadmap should outline the way to guarantee sustainable comprehensive development, provide economic opportunities, and improve the quality of services, in parallel with the political and administrative reform tracks.

The King also pointed to the importance of the participation of all segments of society and economic sectors, in order to expand dialogue and participation.

His Majesty called for capitalising on the great potential and advantages that Jordan offers, especially in the fields of mining, energy, renewable energy, information technology, tourism, healthcare, agriculture, and creative industries, stressing the need to build on previous achievements.

For their part, attendees presented a number of ideas and suggestions that can improve Jordan’s economic performance, calling for enacting quick short-term reforms, in parallel with developing a roadmap for the medium and long terms to enhance economic growth and attract national and foreign investments.

Attendees also highlighted promising sectors that could attract investments to enhance Jordan’s competitiveness, including advanced technology and industry, pointing to the opportunities that regional integration could offer.

They commended the decision to reduce electricity costs on productive sectors, urging further steps to support the national economy and exports.

Furthermore, they highlighted the importance of legislative stability in attracting investments, underlining the role of mega projects in accelerating economic growth.

Crown Prince meets Kuwait Red Crescent Society chairman

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II met with Kuwait Red Crescent Society Chairman Hilal Al Sayer on Sunday.

During the meeting, Crown Prince Al Hussein reaffirmed the deep-rooted ties between Jordan and Kuwait, commending the humanitarian services provided by the Kuwait Red Crescent Society to refugees.

For his part, Chairman Sayer gave a brief about the society’s activities in Jordan and its efforts to help refugees, the latest of which was the launch of a medical programme to perform surgeries for Syrian refugees, in cooperation with a Kuwaiti medical team and the Jordan National Red Crescent Society.

Jordan National Red Crescent Society President Mohammad Al Hadid, Kuwait Red Crescent Society Secretary General Maha Al Barjas, and Kuwait’s Ambassador to Jordan Aziz Al Daihani attended the meeting.

King receives cables on 23rd anniversary of assumption of constitutional powers

His Majesty King Abdullah has received cables marking the 23rd anniversary of his assumption of constitutional powers, which falls on Monday, 7 February.

The cables’ senders senior officials and officers, and representatives of civil society organisations highlighted the achievements of His Majesty the late King Hussein, who dedicated his life to Jordan.

They said Jordan, under King Abdullah’s leadership, is moving ahead into further progress and prosperity.

Jordan, US talk ties, partnership (Correction)

Ayman Safadi, the foreign minister, Saturday met with US top officials in Amman to discuss Jordan-US ties and partnership.

US Special Assistant to the President and National Security Council Senior Director for Middle East and North African Affairs Barbara Leaf, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Yael Lempert and Safadi discussed the newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the two countries’ partnership, which replaces the previous one that ends at the end of September.

Safadi, who is also the deputy prime minister, praised the US for its support for Jordan, highlighting its importance for the Kingdom’s development efforts, as well as its efforts in grappling with the challenges of hosting refugees.

The US delegation reiterated the two countries’ “strategic relations” and Washington’s keenness to continue supporting the Kingdom.

They lauded Jordan for its contribution to upholding regional security and stability.
