New York: The Department of Statistics took part in the 56th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission, held in New York, with the participation of heads and representatives of statistical offices, global statistical centers, and relevant international organizations.
According to Jordan News Agency, the department noted that its Director General, Haidar Freihat, underscored in his address to the commission the significance of international cooperation, joint efforts, and knowledge exchange to enhance the production of accurate data. He emphasized the need to launch digital platforms to facilitate data sharing and promote the use of descriptive statistics to support informed decision-making. Freihat also stressed the importance of aligning national statistical systems with international standards to ensure data quality and reliability.
He further highlighted the role of capacity-building initiatives and the provision of necessary resources to produce accurate and credible statistics in accordance with global benchmarks. Key topics discussed during the session included national accounts, population and housing censuses, data science, indicators for the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and food security and nutrition, among other issues.
The session also resulted in decisions and recommendations aimed at strengthening the role of statistical agencies in regional and global statistical initiatives, ensuring effective representation, and fostering collaboration among UN Statistical Commission members. On the sidelines of the session, Freihat held bilateral meetings with senior officials from statistical agencies to enhance cooperation, exchange expertise, and explore best practices in statistical methodologies. Discussions also focused on promoting Jordan's statistical expertise and positioning it as a key regional and international player in the field.
