Amman: Minister of Environment Muawiyah Radaideh on Tuesday emphasized the strategic importance of transitioning to a green economy amidst increasing global and regional environmental challenges. He made these remarks during the launch ceremony of the "Moving Towards a Green Economy" program, which showcases Jordan's dedication to fostering a sustainable, circular economy that supports development, job creation, and investment in clean energy and sustainable transportation.
According to Jordan News Agency, the program is funded by the European Union and implemented in cooperation with SPARK and the Center for Energy and Environmental Sustainability in Industry. It aims to bolster business institutions across Jordan by building capacity in green sectors, empowering small and medium-sized industries to adopt sustainable practices, and enhancing cooperation among stakeholders. This initiative aligns with Jordan's Economic Modernization Vision, striving for a competitive economy balanced with environmental and social justice.
Fathi Jaghbir, President of the Jordan and Amman Chambers of Industry, described the program as a significant advancement for the industrial sector, improving competitiveness and compliance with international standards. He highlighted the industrial sector's contribution to the GDP and its role as a major employer and exporter. The program seeks to enhance resource efficiency, promote renewable energy use, and reduce carbon emissions within small and medium enterprises.
Jaghbir emphasized the need for collaboration between government institutions, the private sector, and international partners. He advocated for supportive financing and incentives to expedite the shift towards sustainability, asserting that the program could serve as a national model for addressing environmental and economic challenges.
Omar Abu Eid, Director of the Energy, Environment, and Climate Change Program at the EU Delegation to Jordan, stated that the EU's involvement is aimed at aligning economic activities with green objectives. He stressed the importance of business support institutions in promoting circular economy practices and resource optimization, particularly in the industrial sector.
Afef Ajengui, Program Manager at SPARK, discussed the program's goal to encourage green solutions and circular business models as part of a regional initiative spanning seven countries. She highlighted Jordan's strategic position in addressing regional challenges like water scarcity, underscoring the program's potential to promote inclusive economic growth and enhance youth employment opportunities.
