Luxembourg: The European Union has approved a ban on Russian natural gas imports to EU countries by the end of 2027, following a measure proposed by the European Commission last spring. This decision is now set for discussion in the European Parliament.
According to Jordan News Agency, the decision was approved by a majority of EU member states during a meeting of EU energy ministers in Luxembourg. However, Slovakia and Hungary opposed the measure. The EU has been striving to decrease its dependence on Russian fossil fuels since the outbreak of the war between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022. Although the bloc has completely halted oil imports from Russia, it still relies on natural gas exports from Moscow, which constituted 19 percent of total EU gas imports in 2024, a significant decrease from 45 percent in 2021.
