Brussels: The European Parliament adopted a non-binding resolution urging EU member states to consider recognising the State of Palestine as part of efforts to achieve a two-state solution. The resolution is titled “Gaza on the Brink: EU Action to Combat Famine, the Urgent Need to Free Hostages and Move Towards a Two-State Solution,” and was introduced by the Social Democrats, Greens, and Renew Europe political groups.

According to Jordan News Agency, the resolution passed with 305 votes in favour, 151 against, and 122 abstentions. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing the situation as “catastrophic” and called on the EU to take immediate and effective action.

The resolution strongly condemned the Israeli government’s ongoing blockade of humanitarian aid into Gaza. MEPs stated that the blockade has resulted in famine conditions in the northern part of the enclave and urged the opening of all relevant border crossings to allow the free flow of humanitarian assistance.

The Parliament also called for the urgent reinstatement and funding of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), under strict oversight mechanisms, expressing dissatisfaction with the current aid distribution system. While the resolution is not legally binding, it reflects growing pressure within European institutions to take concrete steps toward resolving the conflict and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
