Finland Calls for Stricter US Sanctions as EU Prepares New Measures Against Russia

Helsinki: The Finnish prime minister has urged the United States to adopt tougher sanctions against Russia while the European Union prepares a new sanctions package. Petteri Orpo, in an interview with Yle Radio Suomi, emphasized the importance of the US implementing stringent sanctions in response to Russia's actions, highlighting President Donald Trump's existing tough sanctions as a foundation.

According to Anadolu Agency, Orpo reiterated the necessity of increasing sanctions on Russia to facilitate a ceasefire and initiate a peace process. He stressed the need for the West, including the US, Europe, and like-minded nations, to intensify pressure on Russia and support Ukraine's military efforts to repel ongoing attacks.

Orpo, who visited Kyiv recently, described the situation in Ukraine as "shocking" and confirmed Finland's commitment to supporting Ukraine in maintaining daily life during wartime. He also addressed concerns about Finland's defense spending, stating that insufficient defense capabilities could jeopardize national safety.
