Amman, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi in a phone call on Thursday with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, reaffirmed their absolute condemnation storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque on Tuesday by an Israeli minister.

The two ministers said that this raid constitute a serious escalation and a violation of the international law and the historical and legal status quo in the holy Al Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al Sharif compound, and warned of its consequences.

Safadi and Cavusoglu urged Israel to respect the historical and legal status quo in the holy sites.

The two ministers underlined that the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al Sharif, with its entire area of 144 dunums, is a pure place of worship for Muslims, and that the Jordan-run Jerusalem Awqaf and Aqsa Affairs Department is the only entity that authorized to manage its affairs and organizes entry to it.

The Turkish Foreign Minister stressed the importance of the role of the Hashemite Custodianship over the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem in safeguarding the holy sites and their identity, and his country’s support for the Jordanian efforts to protect the holy sites and preserve their existing historical and legal status.

The two ministers stressed the need to stop all illegal Israeli escalatory measures aimed at changing the existing legal and historical situation and all measures that undermine the two-state solution, which represents the only way to achieve a just and comprehensive peace.

The two ministers agreed to maintain coordination and joint action to confront the Israeli attacks on the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al Sharif, including through the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and international organizations.

The phone call also covered relations between the two countries and many regional and international issues of mutual interest.
