Tbilisi: Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili was returned to prison on Wednesday after spending approximately three years receiving inpatient medical care at a private clinic, local media reported. The Georgian Penitentiary Service confirmed that Saakashvili, 57, who was moved to the medical facility in May 2022 for extended treatment, has now seen improvements in his health.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Penitentiary Service issued a statement explaining that Saakashvili's health condition is now deemed satisfactory, and he no longer requires inpatient treatment. Consequently, he was discharged from the civil sector clinic and returned to Penitentiary Institution No. 12. Officials have indicated that Saakashvili will continue serving his sentence under general prison procedures.
Saakashvili is slated to remain in custody until 2034, following his conviction in a case related to illegal border crossing.
