Chinese President Xi Jinping Friday received German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the first leader from the EU and the Group of Seven to visit China since the beginning of the outbreak of the Coronavirus.

The Chinese president said Scholz’s visit to Beijing “enhances practical cooperation” with Germany, according to state-run China Central Television.

Jinping said that China and Germany, as “large and powerful countries”, should work together during “times of change and turmoil” for world peace.

For his part, Scholz told the Chinese president that he wanted to “further develop” economic cooperation with China despite the “different views” between the two countries.

“We also want to discuss how we can develop our cooperation on other topics: climate change, food security and heavily indebted countries,” Scholz added.

Scholz is the first leader of the Group of Seven to visit China since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, which prompted the world’s second largest economic power to largely close its borders.
