Nuuk: Greenland's prime minister declared that the nation's future would not be dictated by social media after an image circulated online depicting Greenland covered by a US flag with the caption 'SOON.' Jens-Frederik Nielsen responded firmly, stating, "Our country is not for sale, and our future will not be shaped by debates on social media."
According to Anadolu Agency - English, the image was shared by Katie Miller, a senior aide in the Trump administration and spouse of Stephen Miller, Deputy Chief of Staff to US President Donald Trump. Nielsen labeled the image as "disrespectful," emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and adherence to international law in international relations.
Nielsen pointed out that messages implying possession do not serve as a constructive path forward and overlook Greenland's status and rights. He reiterated that Greenland is a democratic society with self-government, free elections, and robust institutions, firmly anchored in international law and internationally recognized agreements.
Despite the provocative image, Nielsen assured there was no cause for alarm but stressed the need to reject such disrespectful representations. Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty, has been of interest to the US due to its strategic location and abundant mineral resources. While Trump once likened acquiring Greenland to "a large real estate deal," both Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected any proposals to sell the territory, affirming Danish sovereignty.
